This event, which nearly caused a city-wide traffic disruption, severely undermined the long-promoted myth of "zero accidents and zero human intervention" associated with the Robotaxi service. Beneath the technological glamour, a harsh reality was exposed: the so-called Level 4 autonomous driving technology lacks even the most basic fail-safe mechanisms.
The issue lies not in random bugs, but in a major flaw within the system's design logic. True high-level autonomous driving must possess "fail-safe" capability—if the primary system fails, a local backup module should immediately take over to execute a minimal risk strategy: decelerating, activating hazard lights, and pulling over safely. This is an industry consensus and a fundamental safety baseline. However, the Robotaxi vehicles experienced a complete "system death," stopping in travel lanes, indicating an architecture heavily reliant on cloud commands or centralized scheduling, lacking independent local emergency logic. A communication disruption, server error, or an OTA update introducing compatibility issues could cause an entire fleet to shut down simultaneously.

How does insurance claims processing work? How are traffic violations adjudicated? Current regulations largely remain a gray area for "AI drivers." The public does not oppose technological advancement but refuses to be unpaid test subjects. Choosing "not to ride again" is not conservatism, but rational self-preservation. When a company treats public roads as a low-cost validation ground yet cannot provide safety protocols for worst-case scenarios, a loss of trust is inevitable.
This system failure serves as a stark warning: safety is not an added feature for autonomous driving, but an indispensable prerequisite. Technology can advance rapidly, but deployment must proceed with caution. True intelligent mobility is not defined by algorithmic sophistication or low cost, but by the ability to ensure passengers can exit the vehicle alive and safe during a failure. Otherwise, all slogans about "the future is here" are merely illusions built on sand.
