Piper Sandler Initiates Coverage on SoFi Technologies With Overweight Rating, Targeting Millennial Credit Market Opportunity

Stock News08-18

Piper Sandler has launched research coverage on SoFi Technologies Inc. (SOFI) with an Overweight rating, signaling strong growth prospects for the digital financial services firm. The investment bank set a price target of $22.00 per share, while the stock edged down 0.93% in Monday's after-hours trading session.

Analysts Patrick Moley, Will Copps, and Ben Bogdanski highlighted in their research note that SoFi Technologies Inc. operates as a vertically integrated digital financial services company, offering a diverse range of products spanning lending, checking accounts, savings accounts, and investment accounts. The bank believes the company presents investors with exposure to two distinct growth catalysts that set it apart from peers.

The first driver centers on the lending and debt consolidation market targeting young, creditworthy consumers, where the total addressable market (TAM) remains substantial and continues to expand. SoFi Technologies Inc. focuses primarily on millennials and Generation Z with strong credit profiles, capturing significant opportunities in personal lending and debt consolidation. As consumers increasingly prioritize debt management amid elevated interest rates, the company's digital-first platform has been steadily capturing market share from traditional financial institutions. Moley emphasized that the company is well-positioned to tap into substantial refinancing demand from high-income, prime-credit millennials, particularly in credit card and student loan refinancing, which align closely with the liability structures of its target borrowers.

The second growth engine lies in the company's powerful product flywheel effect, which is accelerating adoption and penetration of platform offerings among both new and existing members. The research report underscored that the "expanded product flywheel is operating effectively" at SoFi Technologies Inc. Customers who initially apply for a loan tend to progressively open checking accounts, savings accounts, investment accounts, and insurance products. This multi-product bundling strategy effectively reduces customer acquisition costs while simultaneously enhancing customer lifetime value.

Looking ahead, the research note projects that the company will achieve a revenue compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22% from 2026 through 2028, accompanied by an adjusted EBITDA CAGR of 27%. The analysts concluded that the current share price offers an attractive entry point for long-term investors seeking exposure to the company's growth trajectory.
