NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang visited the US Capitol on Tuesday, meeting with Senator Mark Warner (D-Virginia), who serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Warner told reporters their discussion covered several AI-related topics, including job impacts, national security, and data centers. He also noted that Huang is "a strong advocate for open-source models."

"He makes a compelling argument," Warner said. "But the problem is, things are moving too fast. Six months ago, I was more inclined toward closed-source models. At that time, Claude had just been released, and the industry was largely heading in that direction."

He added: "Now we see the emergence of Chinese models like Kimi, while more and more American companies are pivoting to open-source approaches. When it comes to open-source technology, I'm not sure the genie can be put back in the bottle. But I'm still carefully considering this issue."

Amid concerns that such technologies could face restrictions, NVIDIA joined dozens of other tech companies last week in signing an open letter urging US policymakers not to over-regulate open-weight models.

In his first post on the X platform, Huang highlighted the letter, arguing that the world needs "both top-tier closed-source models and top-tier open-source models."

"AI will reshape every industry, empower every business, and every country will participate in AI research and development," he wrote. "Open-source models can strengthen security and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and technology adoption, and help achieve technological sovereignty."
