AI Chip Demand Drives Foundry 2.0 Growth, Samsung Electronics Holds Global Number Two Spot

Deep News10-02 15:08

The surge in artificial intelligence chip demand is also benefiting Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SSNLF)'s foundry business. Currently, AI chip production capacity is highly concentrated at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM), and a growing number of customers are seeking to diversify their orders, helping Samsung Electronics secure its position as the world's second-largest foundry player.

Market research firm Counterpoint released data on the 30th showing that in the second quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SSNLF) held approximately a 4% share of the global foundry market, second only to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM). Strong demand for the company's 4-nanometer and 5-nanometer processes (SF4 and SF5 nodes), combined with rising wafer prices, underpinned this performance.

However, the gap between Samsung and TSMC remains enormous. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) reported second-quarter revenue of $40.2 billion (approximately 54 trillion Korean won), up 34% year-on-year, accounting for about 42% of the entire Foundry 2.0 market. Counterpoint stated that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SSNLF) and Intel are picking up orders from customers looking for alternative suppliers, but they still struggle to replace TSMC in terms of advanced process capacity, yield rates, and advanced packaging capabilities.

The focus of industry competition is expected to expand from wafer manufacturing to the field of advanced packaging. Counterpoint predicts that the Foundry 2.0 market will maintain double-digit growth in the second half of the year, with packaging, substrate, and testing capacity becoming key variables in expanding AI chip supply.
