Apple's Market Value Surpasses $5 Trillion, Reclaiming Top Global Spot: Its Low-Cost AI Strategy Emerges as a Rare Safe-Haven Asset

Deep News06:16

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) briefly surpassed a $5 trillion market capitalization during Tuesday's trading session, making it the second publicly traded company to reach this milestone after NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA).

Apple has consistently maintained a restrained approach to AI infrastructure investment, avoiding large-scale commitments to building its own data centers or chips. Instead, it prefers to meet its needs through methods like leasing computing power. The company's capital expenditure has even continued to decline over the past three quarters. While its peers grapple with the tension between spending discipline and growth promises, Apple's relative restraint is being revalued by the market.

Jay Woods, Chief Market Strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, commented: "Apple was criticized for not investing enough in AI, but in hindsight, it has successfully sidestepped the capital expenditure trap."

On Tuesday, Apple's stock price hit an intraday high of $342.89, briefly pushing its market cap to $5.036 trillion. The stock eventually closed up 0.94% at $340.80, corresponding to a market cap of $4.99 trillion, slightly below the $5 trillion threshold. However, this intraday milestone is significant enough to mark a key turning point in the market narrative.

This breakthrough came just one day after Apple surpassed NVIDIA in market value, reclaiming the title of the world's most valuable company for the first time since May last year. So far this year, Apple has accumulated gains of approximately 25%, while NVIDIA has seen a significant pullback from its May highs, with a year-to-date gain of only about 7%.

The Ripple Effect of Alphabet's $205 Billion Capital Expenditure Plan

Apple's market cap milestone comes amid a structural sell-off in the technology sector. The trigger came from Alphabet, which last week announced it would raise its capital expenditure for this year to as high as $205 billion. During the same period, its free cash flow turned negative at $5.9 billion, the first time it has been negative in over twenty years as a public company.

This figure triggered a collective investor reassessment of the return on investment for AI infrastructure. Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 ignited the AI arms race, the four major hyperscale cloud providers—Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Meta—have been competing to increase their spending. Their combined capital expenditure for this year is projected to reach $700 billion.

On the NVIDIA front, the total value of potential AI infrastructure transactions it is involved in has already exceeded $750 billion. Its five-year CDS price recently spiked to a historic high of 82 basis points.

Apple has consistently chosen a restrained path in AI infrastructure spending, avoiding large-scale investments in building its own data centers or chips, and instead preferring to fulfill its needs through leasing computing power. Its capital expenditure has even continued to decline over the past three quarters. As its peers struggle between spending discipline and growth promises, Apple's relative restraint is being revalued by the market.

From AI Laggard to Safe-Haven Asset: A Narrative Reversal in Two Months

During the WWDC event in June, the market was not convinced by Apple's launch of the new Siri and Apple Intelligence, with the stock price falling over 3% at one point. The core concern was whether Apple had fallen behind in the AI race.

In less than two months, this narrative has been completely overturned. According to FT reports, the revamped Siri virtual assistant has received widespread positive feedback in early testing before its full launch, helping Apple gradually shed its "AI laggard" label.

Against a backdrop where peers like Alphabet and Meta are facing dual scrutiny from credit markets and shareholders due to massive capital expenditures, Apple's strategy is being reinterpreted as a shareholder-friendly choice.

Jay Woods, Chief Market Strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, commented: "Apple was criticized for not investing enough in AI, but it now appears to have successfully avoided the capital expenditure trap."

This Thursday's Earnings: Apple's Moment of Validation

However, the reality behind the $5 trillion market cap remains to be tested. Apple is scheduled to release its latest quarterly earnings after the market close on Thursday, July 30th. This will also be the last earnings call before CEO Tim Cook steps down, as hardware chief John Ternus is set to officially take over on September 1st.

Rising memory chip prices are eroding Apple's hardware profit margins. Analysts currently estimate Apple's gross margin will be around 47.5% to 48.5%, down from 49.3% in the previous quarter. In June, Apple raised prices on its Macs and iPads due to memory chip shortages. This earnings report will be the first to quantify the specific financial impact of the global memory chip shortage on Apple.

The differing AI competition paths of Apple and NVIDIA have become a focal point for investors this summer. NVIDIA is betting on the "picks and shovels" logic, providing the computing infrastructure for the entire AI industry. Apple, on the other hand, has chosen a low-capital-intensity ecosystem integration path, embedding AI features into its existing hardware and services flywheel.
