Microsoft Launches 'Project Perception': A New Proprietary AI for Cybersecurity to Rival Mythos

Companies are ramping up defenses against new cyber threats fueled by artificial intelligence, driving cybersecurity budgets higher. Microsoft is aiming to capture market gains from this trend.

On Monday, Microsoft unveiled a new AI security product named "Project Perception," powered by a suite of proprietary AI models built specifically for cybersecurity scenarios. The company positions this offering as a cost-effective alternative to Anthropic's Mythos model, which also relies on artificial intelligence to automatically hunt for software vulnerabilities.

As businesses anticipate a rise in AI-driven cyberattacks, they are increasing their cybersecurity spending. This new product represents a key move by Microsoft to capitalize on that market. Enterprises are willing to invest more in AI-powered security tools to reduce reliance on traditional human security analysts, who typically must continuously monitor corporate IT systems to detect intrusion risks and respond.

Microsoft Executive Vice President Hyatt Garrott officially announced the product. She took over Microsoft's security business unit in February of this year, restructuring the entire division to shift more research and development focus toward AI security tools.

Project Perception integrates models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft's own suite, including the newly announced proprietary model MAI-Cyber-1-Flash. Microsoft claims that this proprietary model matches the performance of Mythos on certain cybersecurity tasks but at a significantly lower cost.

Earlier this month, tech media outlet The Information was the first to report on Microsoft's plans for Project Perception.
