Sea Ltd Establishes Dedicated AI Investment Unit to Diversify Growth Beyond E-commerce

Deep News05-29

Sea Ltd has formed a specialized team to identify and pursue investment opportunities in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector globally, aiming to cultivate a new growth engine beyond its core e-commerce business.

According to sources familiar with the matter, this investment unit operates directly under the company's president's office and is one of several initiatives designed to allocate capital for both internal and external AI projects. The sources requested anonymity as the information is not public.

The team is reportedly led by senior executive Endong Zhang, who is responsible for evaluating potential investment opportunities in startups worldwide. The sources added that Zhang is also overseeing several other newly formed teams focused on analyzing the implementation and application of AI within the company's own operations.

Sea Ltd, which operates the e-commerce platform Shopee and the gaming platform Garena, is undergoing a significant structural transformation. Last year, CEO Forrest Li stated that the company's market capitalization could potentially reach $1 trillion if it intensifies its focus on AI and makes the right strategic decisions.

A spokesperson for Sea Ltd declined to comment on this initiative.
