No Easy Way Out of the Tariff Mess for Markets -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-08

1228 ET - Stocks bounced briefly this morning on a rumor that the White House would pause some tariffs, before the administration quashed the talk. Nonetheless, even stepping back from tariffs might not calm markets for good at this point. If Trump backs off, "The markets might welcome that news, but eventually, it will be hard for Trump to stick to that stance. Indeed, it's possible that a rising stock market might be used an excuse for Trump to turn the trade dial back up," Neil Dutta of Renaissance Macro writes. "This is and never has been an on-off switch. The uncertainty has become too great." Don't count on a V-shaped recovery, he cautions. (matt.grossman@wsj.com, @mattgrossman)
