Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the U.K. automakers will pay a 10% tariff on 100,000 cars sent to the U.S. rather than the 25% tariff for imported vehicles and car parts. It's a tiny percentage of the U.S. auto industry but important for the United Kingdom, he said.
"That protects their car industry," he said. "For the U.K. auto people, this is tens of thousands of jobs."
The U.K. government said tariffs on automobiles will be reduced from 27.5% to 10%. This will apply to a quota of 100,000 U.K. cars. Washington will also cut tariffs on U.K. steel to zero from 25%.
