U.S.-China Trade Deal Boosts Sentiment on Asia Tech Hardware -- Market Talk

Dow Jones05-13

0452 GMT - The U.S.-China trade deal is positive for sentiment on the Asian tech hardware segment, says Randy Abrams, UBS head of Taiwan research, in a note. China's tech exports to the U.S. was over $130 billion in 2024, concentrated in smartphones, PCs, TVs, game consoles and low-end networking equipment, he says. However, as tech was already mostly exempt from tariffs, there has been no meaningful rollback, he says. "We estimate 80% of the tech product tariffs were already temporarily exempt from all but the 20%  fentanyl tariff," he says. Yet, the 20% tariff is likely enough to slow PC shipments from China and accelerate shifts to Southeast Asia, he adds. (sherry.qin@wsj.com)
