Treasurys, Dollar Seen as Losing Safe-Haven Attributes -- Market Talk

Dow Jones2025-05-19

0909 ET - Markets are nervous again, but this time around they aren't seeking refuge in U.S. bonds or the dollar. Today's selloff of American assets "is striking and shaves away a fraction of the attractiveness of Treasuries," Evercore ISI analysts write. They call attention to the fact that, when S&P downgraded the U.S. debt in 2011, stocks fell but bonds and the dollar rallied as investors sought assets perceived as highly safe. The risk-off attributes of Treasurys could be "tarnished at the margin even while this remains the core global asset," the analysts say. (paulo.trevisani@wsj.com; @ptrevisani)
