Amazon.com (AMZN) is in talks with Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI over a deal that could provide customized artificial intelligence models for products like Alexa, as the e-commerce giant considers a multibillion-dollar equity investment in the ChatGPT maker, The Information reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the discussions.
The proposed arrangement could see OpenAI assign engineers to build Amazon-specific models, boosting revenue but potentially stretching resources as it competes with Anthropic and Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google in consumer and enterprise AI, according to the report.
The talks underscore OpenAI's push to secure large-scale funding to meet cloud infrastructure commitments exceeding $600 billion through the early 2030s, the report added.
Amazon.com and OpenAI did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
Shares of Amazon.com were down 2.4% in recent trading.
