Vietnam Airlines will suspend 23 flights on seven domestic routes weekly starting April 1 due to tightening jet fuel supply, as it seeks to prioritize international flights and vital domestic routes, according to a news release by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on Monday.
The affected routes are from Hai Phong to Buon Ma Thuot, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc and Can Tho; and Ho Chi Minh City to Van Don, Rach Gia and Dien Bien.
The authority previously warned of a risk of jet fuel shortage starting April due to delays in fuel cargo deliveries from the same month, OPIS previously reported.
Regional carriers from Cathay Pacific to Air New Zealand have announced fuel surcharges following a spike in jet fuel prices since the start of the Middle East conflict. Vietnamese airlines are looking into fuel surcharges on international flights and could apply them from early April, the authority said.
Physical jet fuel prices closed Monday at $228.32/bbl FOB Singapore compared to $93.48/bbl on Feb. 27 before the conflict, according to OPIS data.
