Australian Consumer Confidence Slumps To Record Low -- Market Talk
Dow Jones03-24
0433 GMT - Australian consumer confidence has been crunched by rising gasoline prices and successive interest rate increases in February and March. Confidence fell 5.4 points last week to 63.1 points, its lowest reading in the history of the survey, which began in 1973, according to ANZ and pollster Roy Morgan. Short-term swings in confidence aren't a big determinant of interest rate decisions by the Reserve Bank of Australia, but this particular reading will likely attract some attention given that inflationary expectations have also risen to record highs.(james.glynn@wsj.com; X @JamesGlynnWSJ)
