Australia's Monthly CPI Data Still a Trigger for Interest Rates -- Market Talk

Dow Jones03-23

0104 GMT - Australia's February's CPI data on Wednesday is expected to record a small monthly decline, pulling the annual rate down by two-tenths to 3.6%. It's generally accepted that the monthly numbers aren't considered by the Reserve Bank of Australia to be as telling as the quarterly CPI. Still, the RBA raised the official cash rate last week despite expectations it might instead wait for May so it could review the quarterly numbers. It might be that independent voices on the RBA board attach more importance to the monthly numbers than the central bank itself. The 5 to 4 split vote for a rate hike last week suggests the debate was robust.(james.glynn@wsj.com; X @JamesGlynnWSJ)
