Communications-services rose amid deal activity.

Italy's state-controlled postal service Poste Italiane made a $12.5 billion cash-and-stock bid for carrier Telecom Italia, a move that could bring its operations and infrastructure back under government ownership.

A bipartisan pair of U.S. senators introduced legislation to prohibit entities regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, including prediction-market exchanges Kalshi and Polymarket's U.S. platform, from listing contracts related to sporting events. Shares of sports-betting firms such as DraftKings and Penn Entertainment, which have been under pressure due to competition from the prediction markets, rose in the wake of reports on the legislation.
