U.S. Gasoline Prices Approach $4 -- WSJ

By Xavier Martinez

$3.983

This is how much a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline cost in the U.S. on average-up by around a third from just under $3 when the war in the Middle East started.

Gas prices rarely break $4 a gallon. This century, there had only been 206 days with average gas prices over that benchmark before today: One stretch in 2008 and again in 2022, during a stretch of surging inflation.

-- Wednesday's average is still more than $1 below the greatest-ever recorded national average of $5.02, which occurred in June 2022.

-- Diesel prices are also on the rise, affecting truckers and those in the fishing, farming and construction industries. In California, diesel prices have soared to over $7 a gallon-the highest on record in the Golden State-while the national average is now $5.366.
