Cosco, China's largest shipping company, said that it had restarted bookings between Asia and the Gulf region, where Iran has managed to all but stop the flow of ships. The state-owned container shipping company's move came after Iran said in a post on X that "non-hostile" vessels could pass through the waterway "in coordination with the competent Iranian authorities."
China accounts for more than 80% of Iran's oil exports. Cosco said that it will resume bookings for containers for shipments to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Iraq.
All six countries have been hit by Iranian drones and missiles, while Tehran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz with threats of mines and attacks. Cosco said the bookings were subject to change given the volatile situation in the Middle East.
Ship movement across the strait remains very limited, with only a handful of tankers and general cargo vessels crossing a waterway through which 20% of the global oil supply typically flows.
