Japanese chemical manufacturer Tosoh Corp. on Monday announced it will raise the price of all polyethylene resin products by 90 yen per kilogram to cope with soaring oil prices stemming from the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Polyethylene resin products are used as the primary raw materials for manufacturing a wide range of plastic goods. Tosoh did not reveal the percentage increase of prices. The price hike will take effect for shipments starting April 1.
The company's decision was based on the assumption the price of domestically produced naphtha, a raw material refined from crude oil, will rise by 30% to 40% in the future. Tosoh said it will step up its efforts to ensure the stable supply of polyethylene resin products with the price rise.
Polyethylene resin is a foundational industrial material for manufacturing products such as containers for food, pharmaceuticals and industrial goods. Tosoh's price hike may lead to price increases for consumers in a wide range of products.
