Shopify's Conservative Stance on Agentic AI Looks Prudent -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-06 19:30

0730 ET - Shopify is likely right to keep expectations for agentic commerce modest thus far, TD Cowen's John Shao says, pointing to China, where adoption is further ahead, but evidence points to the technology still in the early stage. He notes that "stringent vertical integration requirements and high user expectations have led to some disappointment across monitored social media channels," suggesting the hype has outpaced practical results. While agentic AI, which can autonomously plan and execute decisions, is highly anticipated within the Shopify ecosystem, TD says channel checks in China "support management's conservative agentic commerce expectations, which we now believe to be more realistic." Even so, Shao says Shopify is well positioned to become a key enabler and eventual beneficiary as the technology improves. (adriano.marchese@wsj.com)
