Teledyne Lifts FY Outlook After Higher 2Q Profit, Sales

Teledyne Technologies raised its full-year profit outlook after delivering higher second-quarter profit and sales, driven by growth in its digital-imaging segment.

The industrial and technology company on Wednesday said it expects a better full-year profit performance than previously guided for. Teledyne now expects earnings per share of $20.73 to $20.99 compared with the prior outlook of $20.08 to $20.44.

The adjusted earnings-per-share outlook was increased to a range of $24.45 to $24.65, compared with the prior outlook of $23.85 to $24.15

For its second quarter, net income came to $251.7 million, or $5.37 a share, compared with $209.9 million, or $4.43 a share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings were $6.28 a share for the quarter. According to FactSet, analysts were expecting $5.79 a share.

Net sales rose 9.8% to $1.66 billion from $1.51 billion last year. Analysts were projecting a more modest rise to $1.58 billion.

Executive Chairman Robert Mehrabian said the company saw strong organic growth in its digital-imaging segment, which he said benefited from increased demand for infrared detectors and systems for space and airborne and marine unmanned systems, as well as counter unmanned applications.

"Furthermore, we achieved growth in our other segments and each product line within the Instrumentation segment," Mehrabian added.

For the third quarter, the company is guiding for earnings per share of $5.10 to $5.25. Adjusted earnings are expected at between $6.05 and $6.15, excluding certain transaction and integration costs and acquired intangible asset amortization.

Shares were up 1.2% to $655.30 in premarket trading.
