Market Chatter: White House Vets Candidates For Four CFTC Vacancies

MT Newswires Live09-05 06:06

The White House has vetted candidates for four bipartisan open commissioner positions at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, but it remains unclear whether the administration will move forward with nominations, CNBC reported Friday, citing three people with the matter.

The CFTC currently has only one commissioner, Chairman Michael Selig, while the agency traditionally has five commissioners from both parties, the report said. The agency regulates futures, options and swaps markets and also plays a role in cryptocurrency regulation, according to the report.

The vacancies have become a sticking point in negotiations over the Clarity Act, a cryptocurrency market structure proposal, as Democrats have criticized the administration for leaving the CFTC seats open, the report said.
