AsianFin -- The total box-office revenue of new films released during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday season exceeded 10 billion yuan (about $1.37 billion), breaking the record, according to movie data platform Beacon Pro.

During the January 28 - February 4 holiday season, an unprecedented 187 million moviegoers flock to theaters, setting a new attendance record.

Among the standout films, the animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 emerged as the undisputed champion, grossing a staggering 4.839 billion yuan. Analysts predict its total box office could exceed 8.5 billion yuan, potentially making it the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time. Riding on this success, the film’s international trailer was recently released, with premieres scheduled for Australia and North America in mid-February.

Chinese cinema also made significant strides overseas. Detective Chinatown 1900, Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, and The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants captivated international audiences.

Creation of the Gods II premiered simultaneously in 16 countries, including the U.S., France, and the U.K., and dominated the box office in Australia and New Zealand for four consecutive days. In North America, it led the non-English language film category from January 31 to February 2.

Meanwhile, Detective Chinatown 1900 premiered across multiple Spanish cities and was screened in 213 theaters in North America and 93 in Australia and New Zealand, setting a new record for Chinese-language films abroad.

Global audiences have praised the innovation in visual effects, storytelling, and cultural representation in Chinese films, with many highlighting the high-quality English subtitles that enhance accessibility and appreciation of Chinese cinema.
