I first took noticed of $Rocket Lab USA, Inc.(RKLB)$ in Q4 2024.
After observing from afar, I decided to share a post on Rocket Lab vs SpaceX on 26 Mar 2025. Click here ! for details !
(Since then) like any US listed companies, RKLB has faced significant volatility, especially this month -April 2025.
This was largely due to global trade tensions and tariff policies enacted by the Trump administration.
As of 17 Apr 2025, RKLB is priced at $19.74, marginally higher (+$0.11) than its Thu, 10 Apr 2025 closing of $19.63
Again, like other US stocks, RKLB is struggling to regain momentum after a -12% decline earlier in the month, amid broader market sell-offs tied to tariff announcements.
Hopefully things will turn for the better for RKLB soon. (see below)
On 07 Apr 2025, RKLB has expanded the company’s suite of “advanced” space-grade radio frequency (RF) communications systems, the Frontier radios that have been flight-proven, software-defined and designed for reliable telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C).
The radios, based on technology from Johns Hopkins University, have been in use for over 13 years and work across five frequency bands (L-, S-, C-, X-, and Ka-band).
They are designed:
-
To provide “secure & dependable” communication in any orbit or space environment.
-
Support advanced navigation features.
Equally these radios can easily connect with major global ground stations, including:
-
NASA’s Deep Space Network.
-
Air Force Satellite Control Network.
-
Viasat - highspeed, secure comms network that includes government & military applications.
This make them versatile for many space missions.
Frontier radios have already proven in important missions like
-
NASA’s CAPSTONE.
-
Europa Clipper.
-
Solar Probe Plus.
-
Emirates Mars Mission.
They will also be used in upcoming projects like Viasat’s hybrid communications network for NASA.
In recognition of RKLB’s innovation, the Frontier Radio won the 2024 R&D 100 Award.
Rocket Lab’s VP, Brad Clevenger, highlighted that the radios showcase RKLB’s ability to produce reliable, high-performance products at scale.
Despite industry-wide supply chain issues, Rocket Lab continues to meet the demands of complex space missions effectively.
RKLB vs GSAT.
RKLB's Frontier radios are emerging as strong competitors to $Globalstar(GSAT)$, especially in the field of advanced satellite communications.
Below is how Rocket Lab's Frontier radios compare and challenge GSAT.
Key Advantages of Frontier Radios
(1) Flight Heritage:
-
With over 13 years of proven performance across major missions (see above), Frontier radios have demonstrated reliability in both near-Earth and deep space environments.
(2) Advanced Capabilities:
-
Besides supporting multiple frequency bands (L-, S-, C-, X-, and Ka-band), they are equipped with advanced features like radiometric navigation and ranging waveforms.
-
Posting Frontier radios as cutting-edge solutions for telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C).
(3) Compact Design:
-
Its lightweight & compact design allows easy integration onto satellites, making them highly versatile for various applications.
(4) Recognition:
-
Frontier radios recent win for innovation (of 2024 R&D 100 Award), further solidifying their reputation in the market.
GSAT Comparison.
It should be noted that:
-
GSAT has traditionally focused on providing mobile satellite services (MSS) for voice and data communications globally.
-
GSAT may struggle to match the technological depth and flexibility offered by Frontier radios.
-
RKLB’s Frontier radios on the other hand, cater to more specialized space missions requiring high precision, reliability, and advanced navigation capabilities.
Other competitors.
RKLB’s Frontier radios have proven performance, innovative features, and adaptability make them a formidable competitor in the satellite communications market.
However, RKLB is not a monopoly.
RKLB’s competitors are experts in satellite technology (in their own rites) and (too) have worked closely with NASA and US government agencies.
Top 3 notable competitors include:
-
Known for its high-performance satellite communication systems.
-
LMT develops advanced RF solutions for both near-Earth and deep-space missions.
-
This company provides a wide range of space-qualified communication systems, including software-defined radios, which are used in critical NASA and defense missions.
(3) $Honeywell(HON)$ Aerospace:
-
Offers compact and reliable satellite communication systems, including software-defined radios, tailored for various orbital environments.
Above competitors bring their own strengths in innovation, reliability, and mission-critical performance.
The competition is particularly fierce in the growing market for software-defined radios and space communication systems.
As an upcoming technology company, will RKLB be able to give the 3 big boys a run for US government projects and score against them ? It’s the best man for the job, right ?

Do you think RKLB will be able to recover lost grounds (all -40.79%) after the tariffs’ scare ?
-
Do you think the new Trump administration will award future contracts to new generation tech firms vs established companies, based on price points ?
