The campaigning period for Singapore’s general election has entered its final stretch, with only today and tomorrow remaining. Seven election rallies are set to take place on April 30, just three days before about 2.75 million Singaporean voters head to the polls on May 3.
The intensity of the race now rivals that of last year’s US election, with Punggol emerging as the focal point of this electoral showdown.
On Nomination Day, April 23, Gan Kim Yong, who had long been rooted in the northwest, was fielded in Punggol in the northeast.
Meanwhile, the Workers’ Party, with its stronghold in the northeast, also fielded a formidable team led by Harpreet Singh, a prominent Indian senior lawyer and one of the Workers’ Party’s rising stars this election.
Both parties have strong reasons not to lose Punggol
People’s Action Party: Losing the Deputy Prime Minister would be a massive blow.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated that Gan Kim Yong is a key pillar of his Cabinet, and losing him would cause serious disruption. Gan Kim Yong is responsible for a wide range of duties, including national economic strategy, financial oversight, and international trade. “If he loses, who will replace him?” Lee Hsien Loong asked.
Workers’ Party (WP): It can’t afford to lose in its own stronghold—the northeast.
The WP has been deeply entrenched in the northeast. It holds strong positions in Hougang and Aljunied, where it won 61.19% and 59.93% of the vote in the last election, respectively.
If the WP wins Punggol, it will further expand and connect its northeastern base, allowing better resource sharing across districts.
This kind of voter dilemma is nothing new in Singapore.
In the 2020 general election, the PAP reassigned then-Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat to East Coast, where a tight race was expected. At the time, he was already announced as the next Prime Minister. Many voters gave their votes to the PAP, and the WP lost with 46.61% of the vote.
In the 2011 election, the WP said: “If you don’t vote for our Aljunied team, the Workers’ Party could be wiped out completely, and there would be no opposition voices left in Parliament.”

I’m still weighing my options. Losing a Deputy Prime Minister like Gan Kim Yong would certainly shake the Cabinet, especially given his role in economic and trade matters. But at the same time, the Workers’ Party plays a critical role in keeping Parliament balanced. A strong opposition ensures accountability and keeps the government on its toes.
At the end of the day, I’ll vote for the team I believe offers the clearest vision and strongest commitment to Singapore’s long-term future. Whether from the ruling party or opposition, we need capable leaders who put people first.

As for Ng Chee Meng at Jalan Kayu, he lost Sengkang GRC in GE2020 as he thinks so highly of himself then not to walk the ground. When his team realised how aggressive WP’s candidates were, PAP tried to salvage the situation door-to-door visit. With the limited time available to them, they were unable to complete every household. PAP downfall was their arrogant and not close to the people’s heart. Whereas, WP Jamus Lim 😍

Not keen on following what's happening in SG, but I've heard some pretty funny speeches by the different political groups lol.
