For $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ investors, Elon Musk's "tentative" June 22nd robotaxi launch in Austin feels less like a guaranteed stock surge and more like a textbook "sell the news" event. With core EV sales facing undeniable pressure, the hype around robotaxis is already baked into TSLA's lofty valuation.
Musk's vision of hundreds of thousands of robotaxis by late next year is grand, but the initial reality is a mere 10-20 geofenced vehicles. This pilot, while a step, is a far cry from the mass-market deployment needed to truly justify the current optimism or fundamentally transform Tesla's financial picture overnight. The market has been anticipating this for ages. Will a limited rollout be enough to keep the momentum going, or will it underwhelm expectations, leading smart money to take profits?
For me, the smart play here looks like selling into the event.
