Fads Must Die!

In the realm of consumer experience, extravagance and trendiness are key elements.

Georg Simmel placed extravagance alongside greed and stinginess, viewing them as three distinct psychological attitudes in modern monetary economies. On one hand, we greedily pursue higher returns and frugally cut back on spending—both behaviors reflect a mindset where possessing money itself becomes the ultimate goal.

In contrast, the extravagant consumer finds satisfaction in the very act of spending and consumption. They are fascinated by the transaction itself, not by the possession of money or goods. For them, money’s value lies in its ability to be spent.

Simmel argued that fashion is essentially a product of class distinction. The upper class distinguishes itself from the lower classes by introducing new, often luxurious consumption habits. Once these styles of consumption (extravagant fashion) are imitated by the lower classes, the upper class abandons them and creates new ones.

This endless cycle of imitation and abandonment turns extravagance into a vital mechanism for maintaining and expressing social hierarchy$POP MART(09992)$
