$Ciena(CIEN)$’s fiscal third quarter combined 37% revenue growth, expanding margins and higher annual guidance. The stock nevertheless fell 10.36%. The contradiction makes sense if investors were pricing almost flawless AI-network demand and became more concerned about customer concentration and the durability of recent growth.
Ciena reported on September 3 for the quarter ended August 1. Revenue increased to $1.67 billion from $1.22 billion, adjusted EPS rose to $2.11 from $0.67 and GAAP gross margin expanded to 45.4% from 41.3%. Management raised fiscal-2026 revenue guidance to $6.42 billion, plus or minus $50 million, and guided the fourth quarter to $1.75 billion, plus or minus $50 million. Ciena’s official results provide the figures.
The bullish thesis is that AI clusters create traffic between data centres as well as inside them. Ciena sells optical systems and interconnects that help move that traffic across long distances. Higher volumes can also generate strong operating leverage: GAAP operating margin reached 18.0%, up from 6.1% a year earlier.
The bearish evidence is concentrated demand. Two customers each represented at least 10% of quarterly sales and together generated 41.7% of revenue. A delivery delay, inventory correction or design shift at either customer could cause a material quarterly swing. Supply expansion is positive when demand persists but can become excess inventory if customers digest previous purchases.
The chart had already weakened before earnings. CIEN fell 5.87% on September 1 and another 1.71% on September 2. On September 3 it dropped to $317.46 after trading from $311.60 to $358.76 on 7.48 million shares. The close is far below the August trading band around $390 to $405. Initial support is $311 to $318, followed by the untested $300 area. Resistance is $348 to $360 and then $375 to $383. The price history supports a failed rebound and breakdown, not a routine response to good numbers.
The principal catalysts are conversion of fourth-quarter guidance, customer diversification, order visibility and evidence that AI-related network investment is not merely pulling demand forward. A strong quarter alone cannot answer those duration questions.
If CIEN rebounds into $348 to $360 and fails to close above $360, an illustrative 30 to 45 DTE bear call spread could pair a short $380 call with a long $390 call, provided the live short-call delta magnitude is no greater than about 0.15 and bid-ask spreads are reasonable. Maximum loss is $1,000 minus the credit. A sustained close above $383 would invalidate the breakdown thesis.
The business evidence is bullish, but the price evidence leans bearish until CIEN forms a base. A recovery above $383 with broader customer growth would invalidate that view. Loss of $300 or weaker fourth-quarter guidance would suggest the de-rating has further to run. This is personal opinion for education, not financial advice or an instruction to enter a trade.
