ASML Earnings Review: Profits Doubled, but Will Wall Street Wait Until 2027?
$ASML Holding NV(ASML)$
However, investment gains boosted reported profits, while the equipment revenue mix deserves closer scrutiny. More importantly, investors may have to wait until June 2027 for an updated long-term financial outlook, even as demand threatens to exceed ASML's planned capacity through 2028.
Core Financial Indicators
– Q3 revenue reached €11.66 billion, up 55% YoY and 25% QoQ, slightly above the market consensus of €11.62 billion. The upper end of the company's prior revenue guidance was €12.0 billion.
– Q3 gross margin was 57.5%, up 5.9 percentage points YoY and 3.5 percentage points QoQ, exceeding the market consensus of 55.7% and the upper end of the company's prior guidance of 57%.
– Q3 net income totaled €4.96 billion, up 134% YoY and 70% QoQ, above the market consensus of €4.09 billion. The figure included a €500 million investment gain related to Mistral AI. The upper end of the company's prior net income guidance was €4.35 billion.
Three Things to Watch
How Strong Were the Underlying Earnings?
ASML's higher operating margin confirms genuine improvements in profitability. However, the €510 million investment gain means reported net income growth was partly supported by non-operating income.
Investors should focus on sustainable operating profit, system pricing and upgrade revenue rather than extrapolating the exceptional net income growth rate.
The recently announced price increases will not affect revenue this year. They will begin to be partially reflected in 2027, with the full impact gradually materializing in 2028 and beyond.
Is Even a 30% Capacity Expansion No Longer Enough?
This is arguably the most important fundamental development.
$ASML Holding (ASML.US)$ previously planned to increase Low-NA EUV and immersion DUV production capacity by 30% in 2027, while evaluating another 30% expansion in 2028.
Management now expects customer demand to exceed planned capacity in both years and is exploring further expansion beyond the previously considered 2028 increase.
Some customers are already expressing interest in placing orders for 2029 and even 2030.
This suggests ASML's longer-term revenue potential could exceed earlier expectations, although execution and supplier capacity remain critical constraints.
Why Aren't EUV and Memory Shares Rising Faster?
Despite strong demand for AI chips and advanced DRAM, EUV and memory have not consistently captured a larger share of quarterly system sales.
One explanation is the breadth of the semiconductor investment cycle. Advanced logic and memory fabs require substantial DUV capacity alongside EUV, while revenue recognition depends on equipment deliveries and customer acceptance.
The key question is whether EUV revenue can accelerate as ASML expands manufacturing capacity in 2027 and 2028.
Guidance
– ASML expects Q4 revenue of €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion, with gross margin around 57%.
– For the full year, management raised its revenue outlook to €44 billion to €45 billion, compared with €43 billion to €45 billion previously, and now expects gross margin of approximately 56%.
But there is one notable frustration for investors: the long-term financial roadmap remains outdated.
ASML's existing 2030 revenue scenario of €44 billion to €60 billion dates back to its 2024 Investor Day. With 2026 revenue already expected to reach the lower end of that range, investors have good reason to question whether the original assumptions remain relevant.
Yet management plans to update its longer-term outlook at the June 10, 2027 Capital Markets Day, nearly eight months away.
For a stock already priced for substantial AI-driven growth, investors may not have the patience to wait that long for greater clarity on future revenue and profitability. Strong fundamentals alone may not be enough to sustain further valuation expansion without a more concrete long-term roadmap.
Summary
ASML delivered a strong quarter, supported by higher equipment sales, accelerating upgrade revenue and improving operating margins. However, investment gains inflated headline profits, while the revenue mix deserves closer attention.
The bigger investment story is shifting toward ASML's 2028 capacity constraints and long-term earnings potential. But with a refreshed financial roadmap not scheduled until June 2027, the market may demand more concrete evidence of future growth before rewarding the stock with a higher valuation.
