progress and Gaudi®3 AI accelerator up-scaling.

Low expectations set the stage for potential outperformance in 2025, with Intel possibly returning to profitability and achieving a stock re-rating.

Intel's restructuring and impairment charges have weighed heavily, but positive news on Gaudi®3 could trigger a strong price reaction.

Despite past disappointments, Intel's potential to monetize non-essential businesses and improve data center performance suggests it shouldn't be written off yet.

JHVEPhoto/iStock Editorial via Getty Images

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) will soon present its earnings for the fourth quarter, which could define a significant turning point for the chip company.

Investors will be looking forward to hearing news about Intel’s progress with regards to its restructuring program and, quite likely, to any kind of updates relating to the chip company’s up-scaling of AI accelerator Gaudi®3. The Gaudi®3 is Intel’s answer to the GPUs offered by its competitors Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and could potentially profit from AI accelerators being in a kind of supply shortage.

Nvidia is obviously leading the market here, but both Advanced Micro Devices and Intel have developed their own AI accelerators in order to meet sizzling demand from the data center market.

If Intel avoids any new major impairments and restructuring charges, the chip company could indeed return to profitability in 2025 which in turn could precipitate a stock re-rating.

My Rating History

The latest restructuring of Intel was obviously a very defining event for the chip company, which triggered a considerable stock drop. As I pointed out in my last piece on Intel, however, the focus on the restructuring appeared to me to be a mistake as the chip company retains options to sell non-essential businesses such as Mobileye or Altera. Intel might announce a new set of strategic initiatives in order to right the ship at the chip company, including new savings measures.

I think the worst is behind Intel, and I am looking forward to seeing gradual improvements in operating performance, particularly as Intel starts to up-scale Gaudi®3 deliveries.

Low Expectations Set The Stage For Outperformance Potential In 2025

Though expectations for Intel’s fourth quarter are not high at all, the market clearly anticipates that the worst is already behind the chip company. Intel had a ‘kitchen-sink’ third quarter in which it threw everything at investors at once: Intel’s sales declined 6% YoY, the company recognized $15.9 billion in impairment charges and escalating operating losses in Intel Foundry.

In 3Q24, Intel Foundry, Mobileye and Altera all suffered sales declines, with Altera seeing a whopping 44% YoY sales decline. Altera is a non-essential business unit that supplies customers with end-to-end FPGAs. The only two segments that exhibited sales growth in the last quarter were Data Center and AI as well as Network and Edge which I also anticipate to remain solidly in positive sales growth territory in 4Q24.

Due to sales declines in Intel’s Client Computing, Intel’s core processor business, the chip company overall saw a disappointing 6% sales drop. I do think that with momentum building in data centers that Intel has a good chance of returning to positive sales growth in 4Q24. The Gaudi®3 is Intel’s answer to the GPUs offered by its competitors Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and could potentially profit from AI accelerators being in a kind of supply shortage.Nvidia is obviously leading the market here, but both Advanced Micro Devices and Intel have developed their own AI accelerators in order to meet sizzling demand from the data center market. If Intel avoids any new major impairments and restructuring charges, the chip company could indeed return to profitability in 2025 which in turn could precipitate a stock re-rating.My Rating HistoryThe latest restructuring of Intel was obviously a very defining event for the chip company, which triggered a considerable stock drop. As I pointed out in my last piece on Intel, however, the focus on the restructuring appeared to me to be a mistake as the chip company retains options to sell non-essential businesses such as Mobileye or Altera. Intel might announce a new set of strategic initiatives in order to right the ship at the chip company, including new savings measures.I think the worst is behind Intel, and I am looking forward to seeing gradual improvements in operating performance, particularly as Intel starts to up-scale Gaudi®3 deliveries.Low Expectations Set The Stage For Outperformance Potential In 2025Though expectations for Intel’s fourth quarter are not high at all, the market clearly anticipates that the worst is already behind the chip company. The only two segments that exhibited sales growth in the last quarter were Data Center and AI as well as Network and Edge which I also anticipate to remain solidly in positive sales growth territory in 4Q24.Due to sales declines in Intel’s Client Computing, Intel’s core processor business, the chip company overall saw a disappointing 6% sales drop. I do think that with momentum building in data centers that Intel has a good chance of returning to positive sales growth in 4Q24. The main reason is the very strong earnings presentation of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM) which already reported very robust sales growth for the month of December.Business Unit Revenue And Trends (Intel Corporation)Moreover, after Intel cleaned house in the third quarter, earnings for 4Q24 should look substantially better, that at least is my expectation when it comes to the chip company.Intel is scheduled to makes its earnings presentation for 4Q24 on January 30, 2024 and expectations are not particularly high. The market consensus is presently anchored at $0.12 per share which does, however, reflect a turnaround from a reported loss of $0.46 per share in the prior quarter.Only a slight profit beat, paired with a slightly optimistic outlook with regards to the progress of Intel’s restructuring, could trigger a possibly strong price reaction at the end of the month.Earnings And Revenues (Yahoo Finance)Intel’s Return To ProfitabilityIntel is widely anticipated to report positive earnings in 2025 which would mark a stark contrast to 2024 figures. Intel is presently expected to earn $0.97 per share, on a full-year level, which reflects back to us a 22x profit multiple.Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices are selling for leading (2025) profit multiples of 31x and 24x. Both chip companies, however, are not bogged down by a restructuring and both companies also grew at more than 100% YoY in their data center segments.Intel, on the other hand, only grew its sales 9% YoY, but taking into account the overall tight supply of AI accelerators, I think that Intel does have potential to grow sales faster in 2025, predominantly because of the Gaudi®3 AI accelerator. Gaudi®3 is poised to see a substantial up-scaling in 2025 which could aid a re-rating of Intel’s stock.Earnings Estimate (Yahoo Finance)Obviously, Intel’s ongoing restructuring and uncertainty about a new round of impairment charges as well as slow growth in the data center segment so far have all been reasons for the big valuation discount relative to Intel’s competitors. If you want to focus on growth and market dominance, I think Nvidia is far and away the best chip stock to own, not least because of Nvidia’s own up-scaling of its Blackwell chip.Advanced Micro Devices might be more a sentiment investment here as investors, in my view, underestimate AMD’s accelerating growth in data centers. I recently penned a piece on Advanced Micro Devices, in which I explained why the chip company has re-rating potential when taking into account that AMD has started to outgrow Nvidia in the data center segment.Intel, at this stage of the restructuring, is predominantly a turnaround investment, but Intel may also have the most upside in the short-term if the chip company can up-scale its own slate of AI accelerators in 2025.The likelihood of a new round of impairment and restructuring charges in 4Q24 is very low in my view, and I think that Intel has a good chance to return to profitability in 2025, particularly if Intel has some good news to report in terms of Gaudi®3 shipments at the end of the month. Why The Investment Thesis Could Not Work OutIf Intel messes up its restructuring and fails to turn its profit situation around in 2025, then Intel investors need to brace for a lackluster stock performance. The stock of the chip company has brutally disappointed in the last year, with a negative return of 55%. To provide a little of perspective: Nvidia is up 144% over the last year and Advanced Micro Devices, itself trailing behind Nvidia, is down 24%.However, a potentially drawn out restructuring as well as new impairment charges could hurt my contrarian investment thesis. My ConclusionIntel’s moment of truth is rapidly approaching as the fourth quarter earnings presentation on January 30, 2024 will be the first earnings report since the company’s disastrous 3Q24 in which it announced record impairments and ongoing operational challenges.Intel Foundry’s losses skyrocketed in the third quarter, but I think that the chip company has already incurred most of its expected impairment and restructuring charges in 3Q24.Therefore, with profit expectations being as low as they are and Intel potentially having some good news to report with regards to the up-scaling of Gaudi®3 chips, I think that Intel may have a solid chance of a re-rating, not only after January 30, 2024, but thereafter as well.In my view, Intel should not be written off just yet, as the company has considerable potential to monetize existing non-essential businesses and make a positive impact in its data center segment in 2025.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":28,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":395066245898456,"gmtCreate":1737461899694,"gmtModify":1737461903415,"author":{"id":"3574547619690492","authorId":"3574547619690492","name":"UTOtrader","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/82be6befb29ac8516e463638d3f659d5","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574547619690492","authorIdStr":"3574547619690492"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Apple dropping","listText":"Apple dropping","text":"Apple dropping","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/395066245898456","repostId":"2505732223","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2505732223","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1737471411,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2505732223?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2025-01-21 22:56","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Apple Stock Slides Nearly 4%. While the drivers of the firm’s former buy rating could still materialize, analyst Ananda Baruah wrote, “it certainly won’t be for the next nine months given we’re on the front end of 2.5 Q’s of materially softening iPhone demand.”Apple is scheduled to report its first-quarter results next week. With the downgrades, Apple’s recommendation consensus — a proxy for the ratio of buy, hold, and sell ratings — stands at 4.02 out of five, its lowest since May, and down from an August peak of about 4.3. Just over 60% of the analysts tracked by Bloomberg recommend buying the stock, a rate well below other megacap tech stocks, where the percentage of buy ratings tops 80% or even 90%.MoffettNathanson downgraded the stock earlier this month, citing concerns in China and the stock’s valuation.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":106,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":395065987654304,"gmtCreate":1737461748478,"gmtModify":1737461750510,"author":{"id":"3574547619690492","authorId":"3574547619690492","name":"UTOtrader","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/82be6befb29ac8516e463638d3f659d5","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574547619690492","authorIdStr":"3574547619690492"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buying ","listText":"Buying ","text":"Buying","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/395065987654304","repostId":"2505255122","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":124,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":395065086833144,"gmtCreate":1737461722186,"gmtModify":1737461724115,"author":{"id":"3574547619690492","authorId":"3574547619690492","name":"UTOtrader","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/82be6befb29ac8516e463638d3f659d5","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574547619690492","authorIdStr":"3574547619690492"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buying ","listText":"Buying ","text":"Buying","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/395065086833144","repostId":"2505629608","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2505629608","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"The most recognized names in North America, Europe and Asia rely on MT Newswires to power their applications. According to Biden, the order will \"accelerate the speed at which we build the next generation of AI infrastructure here in America, in a way that enhances economic competitiveness, national security, AI safety, and clean energy”.
\n
According to the order, companies tapping federal land for AI data centers must also purchase an \"appropriate share\" of American-made semiconductors. These purchases will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
\n
\n
\"It's really vital that we ensure that the AI industry can build out the infrastructure for training and using powerful AI models here in the United States”.
\n
-White House technology adviser Tarun Chhabra.
\n
\n
Several known names, including OpenAI Senior Vice President of Global Affairs Chris Lehane, have commended this effort. Lehane also called out for cultivating a robust domestic infrastructure for the growing U.S. artificial intelligence sector.
\n
\n
“So what you get with the Biden administration today is — at least from a signaling perspective — on federal land, trying to short the timeline between when you can get your project shovels in the ground and then the project going forward”.
\n
-Chris Lehane
\n
\n
According to Lehane, the incoming Trump administration sees AI through two lenses — national security and economic security. He hopes that both sides of the coin will amalgamate into a national strategy.
\n
AI Company OpenAI has also recently laid out its vision for artificial intelligence development in the U.S. According to the company, the US needs investment from abroad and supportive regulation to stay ahead of China in the race for nascent technology. In a 15-page document called the “Economic Blueprint”, it said that \"Chips, data, and energy are the keys to winning AI\" and that the U.S. needs to act now to craft nationwide rules that can help secure its advantage.
\n
OpenAI released the document days before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, with CEO Sam Altman also previously donating around $1 million to Trump's inaugural fund in hopes of fostering a positive relationship.
\n
\n
\"There's an estimated $175 billion sitting in global funds awaiting investment in AI projects, and if the U.S. doesn't attract those funds, they will flow to China-backed projects —strengthening the Chinese Communist Party's global influence”.
\n
-OpenAI said in the document.
\n
\n
For this article, we selected AI stocks by going through news articles, stock analysis, and press releases. (NASDAQ:PLTR)
\n
Number of Hedge Fund Holders: 43
\n
Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR) is a leading provider of artificial intelligence systems. On Tuesday, January 14, the Biden administration issued an executive order allowing private sector AI companies to lease federal sites where the U.S. can build frontier AI infrastructure at speed and scale.
\n
\n
“The United States leads the world at the frontier of artificial intelligence (AI). Cutting-edge AI will have profound implications for national security and enormous potential to improve Americans’ lives if harnessed responsibly, from helping cure disease to keeping communities safe by mitigating the effects of climate change. However, we cannot take our lead for granted. We will not let America be out-built when it comes to the technology that will define the future, nor should we sacrifice critical environmental standards and our shared efforts to protect clean air and clean water. That is why today, I am signing an historic Executive Order to accelerate the speed at which we build the next generation of AI infrastructure here in America, in a way that enhances economic competitiveness, national security, AI safety, and clean energy. This Executive Order will direct the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy to lease federal sites where the private sector can build frontier AI infrastructure at speed and scale. These efforts are designed to accelerate the clean energy transition in a way that is responsible and respectful to local communities, and in a way that does not impose any new costs on American families. These efforts also will help position America to lead the world in clean energy deployment in the context of strategic competition abroad. Some of this new capacity will also be committed for use by small businesses and startups. This renewed partnership between the government and industry will ensure that the United States will continue to lead the age of AI”.
\n
\n
The Fly noted that Palantir is one of the companies associated with artificial intelligence or AI, which makes the order an opportunity for the company to expand its role in US government partnerships.
\n
Overall PLTR ranks 7th on our list of the top AI stocks on analyst ratings and news. These purchases will be decided on a case-by-case basis.\n\n\"It's really vital that we ensure that the AI industry can build out the infrastructure for training and using powerful AI models here in the United States”.\n-White House technology adviser Tarun Chhabra.\n\nSeveral known names, including OpenAI Senior Vice President of Global Affairs Chris Lehane, have commended this effort. Lehane also called out for cultivating a robust domestic infrastructure for the growing U.S. artificial intelligence sector.\n\n“So what you get with the Biden administration today is — at least from a signaling perspective — on federal land, trying to short the timeline between when you can get your project shovels in the ground and then the project going forward”.\n-Chris Lehane\n\nAccording to Lehane, the incoming Trump administration sees AI through two lenses — national security and economic security. He hopes that both sides of the coin will amalgamate into a national strategy.\nAI Company OpenAI has also recently laid out its vision for artificial intelligence development in the U.S. According to the company, the US needs investment from abroad and supportive regulation to stay ahead of China in the race for nascent technology. In a 15-page document called the “Economic Blueprint”, it said that \"Chips, data, and energy are the keys to winning AI\" and that the U.S. needs to act now to craft nationwide rules that can help secure its advantage.\nOpenAI released the document days before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, with CEO Sam Altman also previously donating around $1 million to Trump's inaugural fund in hopes of fostering a positive relationship.\n\n\"There's an estimated $175 billion sitting in global funds awaiting investment in AI projects, and if the U.S. doesn't attract those funds, they will flow to China-backed projects —strengthening the Chinese Communist Party's global influence”.\n-OpenAI said in the document.\n\nFor this article, we selected AI stocks by going through news articles, stock analysis, and press releases. These stocks are also popular among hedge funds.\nWhy are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points (see more details here).\n A software engineer manipulating a vast network of code on virtual monitors. \nPalantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR)\nNumber of Hedge Fund Holders: 43\nPalantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR) is a leading provider of artificial intelligence systems. On Tuesday, January 14, the Biden administration issued an executive order allowing private sector AI companies to lease federal sites where the U.S. can build frontier AI infrastructure at speed and scale.\n\n“The United States leads the world at the frontier of artificial intelligence (AI). This renewed partnership between the government and industry will ensure that the United States will continue to lead the age of AI”.\n\nThe Fly noted that Palantir is one of the companies associated with artificial intelligence or AI, which makes the order an opportunity for the company to expand its role in US government partnerships.\nOverall PLTR ranks 7th on our list of the top AI stocks on analyst ratings and news. While we acknowledge the potential of PLTR as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and doing so within a shorter timeframe. If you are looking for an AI stock that is more promising than PLTR but that trades at less than 5 times its earnings, check out our report about the cheapest AI stock. \nREAD NEXT: 20 Best AI Stock To Buy Now and 30 Most Important AI Stocks According to BlackRock. \nDisclosure: None. A lot of people say their positions in flashy technology companies are meant to be long-term holdings, but they're really just an effort to make a quick buck. And that's OK. Any profitable trade is technically a good trade. If you can get in and out at the right time, so be it.
\n
Thing is, there are plenty of tech names that are more than just flash-in-the-pan prospects, and are better suited for holding periods measured in years rather than weeks.
\n
Here's a closer look at three such technology companies. Not only will they be just as impressive 10 years from now as they are today, but their stocks should be trading at much higher prices.
\n
Microsoft
\n
It's tough to imagine a world without Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). Its Windows operating system is installed on three-fourths of the world's desktops and laptops, according to GlobalStats, and its Office productivity software remains the gold standard for the category. Sony's PlayStation gaming console enjoys more worldwide market share than Microsoft's Xbox, but the Xbox is closing the gap, and is still the most popular game console in the U.S.
\n
And these are things consumers can readily see. There's a whole different unseen array of Microsoft-made products that are doing similarly well. For instance, Canalys reports Microsoft's cloud computing business accounted for a second-best 19% of the world's first-quarter cloud infrastructure spending, and the company continues to close the gap with market-leader Amazon.
\n
\n
Now take a step back and ask a thoughtful, critical question: Is there any chance the world will have less need for computers, cloud computing, productivity software, or game consoles 10 years from now?
\n
Any reasonable and realistic answer has to be \"no.\" Indeed, it would be surprising if demand for these products and services wasn't considerably greater a decade from now. Being a market leader in multiple categories, Microsoft can steer the market's ongoing growth in a way that serves itself best. For example, the Windows operating system comes with trial versions of Office software pre-installed.
\n
Bolstering the bullish argument for long-term ownership of Microsoft is the company's evolving business model. Access to Azure, Office, and even video games can now be utilized on a monthly subscription basis, accessible via the cloud. This shift not only makes the company's products more affordable to begin using but also gives Microsoft a better chance of keeping those customers by making it easy to update and upgrade software.
\n
Last year, the last time Microsoft disclosed such data, it had already lined up more than $100 billion worth of subscription cloud revenue that had yet to be booked -- a figure that continues to edge upward.
\n
Palo Alto Networks
\n
Even after several high-profile cybersecurity gaffes embarrassed organizations ranging from Target to Equifax to Yahoo!, some of the world's most important companies are still being hacked. Most recently, Colonial Pipeline agreed to fork over $4.4 million to a computer hacking group known as Darkside to regain control of its 5,500 miles worth of refined oil pipelines.
\n
These things are preventable. They're just not being prevented, as too many organizations don't utilize all the digital defenses available to them. Perhaps the Colonial Pipeline debacle will encourage procurement of this protection.
\n
Enter Palo Alto Networks (NYSE:PANW). Simply put, Palo Alto offers software preventing unauthorized access to a company's network, internal apps, and data. It's even got a ransomware protection solution in its lineup that might have been able to save Colonial Pipeline a few million bucks.
\n
The opportunity is incredible, and should remain so for a while. P&S Intelligence believes the cybersecurity market will grow at an average annual pace of 12.6%, from 2019's $120 billion to $434 billion by 2030. That's a lot, but it's only a fraction of the $10.5 trillion that Cybersecurity Ventures believes cybercrime will cost the world in 2025 alone if enterprises don't step up their digital defense games.
\n
Palo Alto is doing fine, logging more than seven consecutive years of rising revenue as more and more outfits build their digital moats. Given the outlook, more of the same kind of growth is in the cards for a while.
\n
International Business Machines
\n
Finally, add International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) to your list of technology stocks to buy and hold for the next decade.
\n
Yes, this is the same IBM that failed to respond to the advent of things like cloud computing, mobile devices, and all that goes with both. The company's \"strategic imperatives\" plan unveiled in 2015 was meant to steer the company away from a legacy mainframe business that was already dying and toward more contemporary opportunities like the aforementioned cloud and mobile security. By and large, though, it was too little too late.
\n
The IBM of today, however, isn't the IBM from even as recently as two years ago. It's ready to compete where it counts.
\n
Take last month's revelation of new technologies capable of fabricating a 2-nanometer microchip as an example. The microscopic measure is in reference to how small a chip's transistors can be made and still function properly. The smaller, the better, as smaller transistors consume less power, operate faster, and require less space when room is a factor. For perspective, 7-nanometer chips are the best the market has to offer right now.
\n
It's not just more functional chips IBM is starting to develop, either. Just within the past few weeks, the company has unveiled a way for data centers to more efficiently store and retrieve data, and launched AutoSQL, which is capable of retrieving data eight times faster than previous approaches are. Both technologies have a myriad of potential uses, including in the artificial intelligence arena.
\n
Read between the lines. This isn't yesteryear's IBM.
\n
It could still take years for the company to fully monetize these and other breakthroughs, but they're worth the wait.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Technology Stocks You Can Buy and Hold for the Next Decade
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Technology Stocks You Can Buy and Hold for the Next Decade\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-04 23:31 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Let's be honest.
