to determine if they are good buys.

REITs are great investment vehicles for delivering a stream of passive income.

The requirement to pay out at least 90% of their earnings as a distribution to qualify for tax incentives makes them perfect for income-inclined investors.

We are lucky that Singapore has developed a vibrant hub for REITs, allowing you to select from a wide variety to invest in.

As with any investment, it’s important to not just look for good dividend yields, but to assess the prospects and risks for any REIT investment you make.

Several REITs are sporting high dividend yields but does this fact make them good to invest in?

We dig into four such Singapore-listed REITs to determine this.

United Hampshire US REIT (SGX: ODBU)

United Hampshire US REIT, or UHREIT, invests in a portfolio of grocery-anchored and necessity-based retail properties in the US.

UHREIT’s portfolio comprises 21 predominantly freehold retail properties and two self-storage properties valued at around US$733 million as of 30 June 2022.

For the first half of 2022 (1H2022), the retail REIT reported an 18.5% year on year increase in gross revenue to US$31.8 million.

Net property income (NPI) rose 10.6% year on year to US$22.6 million.

Distribution per unit (DPU) dipped by 4.6% year on year to US$0.0291. However, excluding top-ups and stipulated damages in 1H2021’s DPU, then DPU would have risen by 13.4% year on year.

Together with 2H2021’s DPU of S$0.0305, trailing 12-month DPU stands at S$0.0593, giving the REIT’s units a trailing distribution yield of 9.6%.

UHREIT remains resilient to downturns as two-thirds of its base rental income comes from tenants providing essential services.

The REIT had just concluded its third DPU-accretive acquisition of Upland Square last month and enjoys high occupancy of 96.2% as of 30 June 2022.

Elite Commercial REIT (SGX: MXNU)

Elite Commercial REIT owns a portfolio of 155 predominantly freehold commercial buildings across the UK valued at £517.7 million as of 30 June 2022.

1H2022 saw revenue rise by 17.7% year on year to £18.7 million with distributable income improving by 9.7% year on year to £12.2 million.

DPU, however, dipped by 2.7% year on year to £0.0256.

Elite’s trailing 12-month DPU stood at £0.0536, giving its units a trailing distribution yield of 8.9%.

The majority of the commercial REIT’s properties have inflation-linked escalation clauses built into their tenancy agreements, and will provide potential rental income uplift when rental rates adjust in 2023.

Meanwhile, 63% of the REIT’s borrowings are on fixed rates, thus mitigating against a sharp rise in borrowing costs.

Gearing ratio stood at 41.9% for Elite with a low cost of debt of just 2.3%.

Manulife US REIT (SGX: BTOU)

Manulife US REIT, or MUST, invests in a portfolio of US office assets.

Its portfolio consists of 12 freehold office properties in US states such as Arizona, California, Oregon, and Virginia, and is valued at US$2.2 billion as of 31 December 2021.

1H2022 saw MUST’s gross revenue rise 10.6% year on year to US$100.4 million.

NPI inched up 2.8% year on year to US$57.6 million but DPU, on the other hand, fell by 3.3% year on year to US$0.0261.

2H2021’s DPU came in at US$0.0263, so totalling the two halves gives MUST a trailing 12-month DPU of US$0.0524.

The commercial REIT’s units offer a trailing distribution yield of 9.5%.

MUST’s portfolio occupancy stood at a healthy 90% as of 30 June 2022.

However, a point of concern is the low physical occupancy which came in at just 28% as most people are still working from home.

Gearing stood fairly high at 42.4% with a weighted average cost of borrowing of 2.97%.

85.7% of the REIT’s loans are on fixed rates, and every 1% increase in interest rates will reduce DPU by S$0.00079.

Cromwell European REIT (SGX: CWBU)

Cromwell European REIT, or CEREIT, has a portfolio of more than 110 predominantly freehold properties located in cities across the Netherlands, Italy, France, and Finland, to name a few.

These properties were valued at €2.6 billion as of 30 June 2022 with net lettable area of two million square metres.

CEREIT put up a respectable performance for 1H2022, with gross revenue rising 8.5% year on year to €107.4 million and NPI climbing 4.7% year on year to €67.3 million.

DPU inched up 2.3% year on year to €0.08695.

Coupled with 2H2021’s DPU of €0.08459, trailing 12-month DPU came in at €0.17154.

CEREIT’s units offer a trailing distribution yield of 8.1%.

The REIT reported record-high occupancy of 95.4% and enjoyed positive rent reversion of 2.9% across the portfolio for 1H2022.

Aggregate leverage stood at 38.6% as of 30 June 2022, with a low all-in interest rate of 1.72%.

CEREIT is aiming to refinance around €180 million of debt due this year and the next by 2H2022.

","source":"lsy1602567310727","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; giving the REIT’s units a trailing distribution yield of 9.6%.UHREIT remains resilient to downturns as two-thirds of its base rental income comes from tenants providing essential services. The REIT had just concluded its third DPU-accretive acquisition of Upland Square last month and enjoys high occupancy of 96.2% as of 30 June 2022.Elite Commercial REIT (SGX: MXNU)Elite Commercial REIT owns a portfolio of 155 predominantly freehold commercial buildings across the UK valued at £517.7 million as of 30 June 2022.1H2022 saw revenue rise by 17.7% year on year to £18.7 million with distributable income improving by 9.7% year on year to £12.2 million.DPU, however, dipped by 2.7% year on year to £0.0256.Elite’s trailing 12-month DPU stood at £0.0536, giving its units a trailing distribution yield of 8.9%.The majority of the commercial REIT’s properties have inflation-linked escalation clauses built into their tenancy agreements, and will provide potential rental income uplift when rental rates adjust in 2023.Meanwhile, 63% of the REIT’s borrowings are on fixed rates, thus mitigating against a sharp rise in borrowing costs.Gearing ratio stood at 41.9% for Elite with a low cost of debt of just 2.3%.Manulife US REIT (SGX: BTOU)Manulife US REIT, or MUST, invests in a portfolio of US office assets. Its portfolio consists of 12 freehold office properties in US states such as Arizona, California, Oregon, and Virginia, and is valued at US$2.2 billion as of 31 December 2021.1H2022 saw MUST’s gross revenue rise 10.6% year on year to US$100.4 million.NPI inched up 2.8% year on year to US$57.6 million but DPU, on the other hand, fell by 3.3% year on year to US$0.0261.2H2021’s DPU came in at US$0.0263, so totalling the two halves gives MUST a trailing 12-month DPU of US$0.0524.The commercial REIT’s units offer a trailing distribution yield of 9.5%.MUST’s portfolio occupancy stood at a healthy 90% as of 30 June 2022.However, a point of concern is the low physical occupancy which came in at just 28% as most people are still working from home.Gearing stood fairly high at 42.4% with a weighted average cost of borrowing of 2.97%.85.7% of the REIT’s loans are on fixed rates, and I strongly believe that the market has priced in too much negativity and pessimism as compared to reality and investors are well advised to follow one of Buffett's key maxims:

Be greedy when others are fearful.

Alibaba has grown at a 5-year CAGR of more than 42%, but the company's stock is trading at a PE of about x17. This indicates a clear undervaluation.

Of course, I understand that investors are worried about a potential ADR delisting, slowing economy and crackdown on internet/tech companies. However, just like a bull market tops on the most bullish conditions, a bear market bottoms on the most bearish conditions. While investors should study and understand the risks, I personally believe that Alibaba stock will rebound strongly from current price levels of below $100/share.

Personally, I see more than 50% upside for BABA stock, as I calculate the company's fair value with a residual earnings model anchored on fundamentals and analyst consensus estimates. My target price is $133.92.

A Best-In-Class Company

Alibaba is one of the biggest e-commerce companies in the world. The company operates three main shopping sites Taobao, Tmall and Alibaba.com, which cumulatively serve some 828 million monthly active buyers (fiscal year ending March 31, 2021).

Alibaba also has stakes in multiple innovative internet/technology businesses such as Youku (video entertainment), Pony.Ai (Autonomous Driving) and most notably Ant Group (The world's biggest financial service company). Alipay serves almost the entire population in China. The platform has 1.3 billion users and 80 million merchants. Notably, the total payment volume of Alipay was more than $19 trillion in 2021.

Moreover, Alibaba is a dominant force in China's cloud market with about37% market share. China's cloud market is expected to grow at a 4-year CAGR of more than 25%, reaching $85 billion in 2026. As the market leader in China, Alibaba is poised to benefit from this super-charged cloud-growth. Cloud is also a business vertical where the company should enjoy government tailwind, as the Chinese Communist Party is actively supporting digitalization efforts of the economy and has made cloud development a key-priority in the party's5-year development plan.

Bullish Financials

In the past financial year, the Alibaba Group generated total revenues of about $134.5 billion and recorded an operating income of about $15 billion. Most notably in the past five years, from March 2017 to March 2022, Alibaba has grown at an unbelievable 5-year CAGR of 42%. For reference, this is almost double the growth rate of Amazon, which grew at a 5-year CAGR of 22% CAGR over the same period. Alibaba closed the fiscal year 2021 with 9.8 billion of net-income available to common shareholders.

Alibaba'sbalance sheet is very strong: As of March 2022, the company recorded $71.7 billion of cash and cash equivalents and only $27.85 of total financial debt. This makes Alibaba a net-creditor of about $43 billion -- which is 17% of the company's market capitalization. Moreover, Alibaba's business operations, despite the strong growth, are cash-accretive. In fiscal 2021, the company generated cash from operations of $22.5 billion. Under these circumstances it should come to no surprise that the company announced a $25 billion share-buyback program, more than 10% of the outstanding shares) in March 2022.

Alibaba will announce earnings for the quarter from April to end of June on August 4th before the market open. Analyst consensus expects total revenues of $30.21 billion and EPS of $1.56.

The Buying Opportunity

Despite the strong business fundamentals, Alibaba stock suffered a spectacular sell-off. BABA shares are down about 70% from ATH as the company was pressured by multiple headwinds: ADR delisting fears, as slowing economy , Covid-19 lockdowns and an aggressive regulatory crackdown that started with the cancellation of the Ant Group IPO in November 2020.

Seeking Alpha

Alibaba is a quality company, and the stock's undervaluation is no secret to investors. The key-question is: is the worst behind, and can investors safely invest in Alibaba stock?

I strongly believe that a safe investment does not exist. In my opinion, every investment opportunity must be judged as a function of its price. And the lower the price, the less risky an investment becomes. Thus, investing is a question of risk/reward. Given Alibaba's extremely depressed valuation - now the company's stock is trading at a PE of about x17- I argue an investment is justified.

Moreover, there are signs that all of Alibaba's headwinds are easing and the negativity surrounding the stock has peaked. China has on multiple occasions tried to communicate to investors that the internet/technology crackdown is coming to an end and is actively supporting the healthy expansion of digital platform economies.

In addition, China has vowed to push more fiscal economic support- with a special focus on digitalization. While western economies are hawkish on fiscal and monetary stimulus - ending a decade long easing cycle, China is one of the few economies that appears to start a new stimulus cycle.

Analysts agree with the bullish thesis. In general, analysts are very bullish on Alibaba stock. Based on ratings of 44 analysts, 33 analysts give a Strong Buy rating, 8 are Buy rated and 3 assign a Hold recommendation. There is no Sell or Strong Sell rating. The average price target is $155.47/share, indicating more than 70% upside.

Seeking Alpha

Residual Earnings Valuation

Let us now look at the valuation. What could be a fair per-share value for Alibaba stock? To answer the question, I have constructed a Residual Earnings framework and anchor on the following assumptions:

To forecast EPS, I anchor on consensus analyst forecast as available on the Bloomberg Terminal 'till 2025. In my opinion, any estimate beyond 2025 is too speculative to include in a valuation framework. But for 2-3 years, analyst consensus is usually quite precise.

To estimate the cost of capital, I use the WACC framework. I model a three-year regression against the Hang Seng to find the stock's beta. For the risk-free rate, I used the U.S. 10-year treasury yield as of July 22nd, 2022. My calculation indicates a fair WACC of about 9.8%. I adjust upward to 12% in order to reflect the company's idiosyncratic market risk.

To derive Baidu's tax rate, I extrapolate the 3-year average effective tax-rate from 2019, 2020 and 2021.

For the terminal growth rate, I apply expected nominal GDP growth plus one percentage point to reflect a favorable growth outlook for Alibaba's high-potential initiatives

I do not model any share buyback further supporting a conservative valuation.

Based on the above assumptions, my calculation returns a base-case target price for Alibaba of $133.92/share, implying material upside of more than 50%.

Analyst Consensus EPS; Author's Calculation

I understand that investors might have different assumptions with regards to Alibaba's required return and terminal business growth. Thus, I also enclose a sensitivity table to test varying assumptions. For reference, red-cells imply an overvaluation as compared to the current market price, and green-cells imply an undervaluation. Notably, all tested combinations imply an undervaluation!

Analyst Consensus EPS; Author's Calculation

Investment Risks

Investors should be aware of the following downside risks that might cause Alibaba stock to materially deviate from my base-case target price of $133.92/share:

First, the economy is currently pressured by multiple headwinds including inflation, real-estate crisis and COVID-19 lockdowns. If the economy would slow more than what is expected and priced in, investors should adjust expectations for Alibaba's short/mid-term business monetization accordingly.

Secondly, China's internet/tech companies are strongly exposed to regulatory risk. While the worst seems to be behind us, the elevated risk exposure persists -- and will arguably never completely fade.

Third, much of BABA's share price volatility is currently driven by investor sentiment towards Chinese ADRs and risk assets. I strongly believe that the market has priced in too much negativity and pessimism as compared to reality and investors are well advised to follow one of Buffett's key maxims:Be greedy when others are fearful.Alibaba has grown at a 5-year CAGR of more than 42%, but the company's stock is trading at a PE of about x17. This indicates a clear undervaluation.Of course, I understand that investors are worried about a potential ADR delisting, slowing economy and crackdown on internet/tech companies. However, just like a bull market tops on the most bullish conditions, a bear market bottoms on the most bearish conditions. While investors should study and understand the risks, I personally believe that Alibaba stock will rebound strongly from current price levels of below $100/share.Personally, I see more than 50% upside for BABA stock, as I calculate the company's fair value with a residual earnings model anchored on fundamentals and analyst consensus estimates. My target price is $133.92.A Best-In-Class CompanyAlibaba is one of the biggest e-commerce companies in the world. The company operates three main shopping sites Taobao, Tmall and Alibaba.com, which cumulatively serve some 828 million monthly active buyers (fiscal year ending March 31, 2021).Alibaba also has stakes in multiple innovative internet/technology businesses such as Youku (video entertainment), Pony.Ai (Autonomous Driving) and most notably Ant Group (The world's biggest financial service company). Alipay serves almost the entire population in China. The platform has 1.3 billion users and 80 million merchants. Notably, the total payment volume of Alipay was more than $19 trillion in 2021.Moreover, Alibaba is a dominant force in China's cloud market with about37% market share. China's cloud market is expected to grow at a 4-year CAGR of more than 25%, reaching $85 billion in 2026. As the market leader in China, Alibaba is poised to benefit from this super-charged cloud-growth. Cloud is also a business vertical where the company should enjoy government tailwind, as the Chinese Communist Party is actively supporting digitalization efforts of the economy and has made cloud development a key-priority in the party's5-year development plan.Bullish FinancialsIn the past financial year, the Alibaba Group generated total revenues of about $134.5 billion and recorded an operating income of about $15 billion. Most notably in the past five years, from March 2017 to March 2022, Alibaba has grown at an unbelievable 5-year CAGR of 42%. For reference, this is almost double the growth rate of Amazon, which grew at a 5-year CAGR of 22% CAGR over the same period. Alibaba closed the fiscal year 2021 with 9.8 billion of net-income available to common shareholders.Alibaba'sbalance sheet is very strong: As of March 2022, the company recorded $71.7 billion of cash and cash equivalents and only $27.85 of total financial debt. This makes Alibaba a net-creditor of about $43 billion -- which is 17% of the company's market capitalization. Moreover, Alibaba's business operations, despite the strong growth, are cash-accretive. In fiscal 2021, the company generated cash from operations of $22.5 billion. Under these circumstances it should come to no surprise that the company announced a $25 billion share-buyback program, more than 10% of the outstanding shares) in March 2022.Alibaba will announce earnings for the quarter from April to end of June on August 4th before the market open. Analyst consensus expects total revenues of $30.21 billion and EPS of $1.56.The Buying OpportunityDespite the strong business fundamentals, Alibaba stock suffered a spectacular sell-off. BABA shares are down about 70% from ATH as the company was pressured by multiple headwinds: ADR delisting fears, as slowing economy , Covid-19 lockdowns and an aggressive regulatory crackdown that started with the cancellation of the Ant Group IPO in November 2020.Seeking AlphaAlibaba is a quality company, and the stock's undervaluation is no secret to investors. The key-question is: is the worst behind, and can investors safely invest in Alibaba stock?I strongly believe that a safe investment does not exist. While western economies are hawkish on fiscal and monetary stimulus - ending a decade long easing cycle, China is one of the few economies that appears to start a new stimulus cycle.Analysts agree with the bullish thesis. In general, analysts are very bullish on Alibaba stock. Based on ratings of 44 analysts, 33 analysts give a Strong Buy rating, 8 are Buy rated and 3 assign a Hold recommendation. There is no Sell or Strong Sell rating. The average price target is $155.47/share, indicating more than 70% upside.Seeking AlphaResidual Earnings ValuationLet us now look at the valuation. What could be a fair per-share value for Alibaba stock? To answer the question, I have constructed a Residual Earnings framework and anchor on the following assumptions:To forecast EPS, I anchor on consensus analyst forecast as available on the Bloomberg Terminal 'till 2025. I adjust upward to 12% in order to reflect the company's idiosyncratic market risk.To derive Baidu's tax rate, I extrapolate the 3-year average effective tax-rate from 2019, 2020 and 2021.For the terminal growth rate, I apply expected nominal GDP growth plus one percentage point to reflect a favorable growth outlook for Alibaba's high-potential initiativesI do not model any share buyback further supporting a conservative valuation.Based on the above assumptions, my calculation returns a base-case target price for Alibaba of $133.92/share, implying material upside of more than 50%.Analyst Consensus EPS; Author's CalculationI understand that investors might have different assumptions with regards to Alibaba's required return and terminal business growth. Thus, I also enclose a sensitivity table to test varying assumptions. For reference, red-cells imply an overvaluation as compared to the current market price, and green-cells imply an undervaluation. Notably, all tested combinations imply an undervaluation!Analyst Consensus EPS; Author's CalculationInvestment RisksInvestors should be aware of the following downside risks that might cause Alibaba stock to materially deviate from my base-case target price of $133.92/share:First, the economy is currently pressured by multiple headwinds including inflation, real-estate crisis and COVID-19 lockdowns. If the economy would slow more than what is expected and priced in, investors should adjust expectations for Alibaba's short/mid-term business monetization accordingly.Secondly, China's internet/tech companies are strongly exposed to regulatory risk. While the worst seems to be behind us, the elevated risk exposure persists -- and will arguably never completely fade.Third, much of BABA's share price volatility is currently driven by investor sentiment towards Chinese ADRs and risk assets. Thus, BABA stock price might show strong price volatility even though the company's business fundamentals remain unchanged.ConclusionAlibaba stock is down 70% from ATH, but the company remains a global powerhouse with enormous long-term potential. Trading at a PE of below x17, despite growing like a start-up, I argue Alibaba's sell-off could offer long-term focused investors, that can stomach short term share-price volatility, a generational buying opportunity.Personally, I see more than 50% upside for BABA stock, despite cautious and conservative valuation assumptions. Analysts also project earnings per share to drop 46%.

Latest Results

Amazon reported Q4 EPS of $27.75. Revenues grew 9% year-over-year to $137.4 billion, almost in line with the consensus estimate of $137.56 billion.

Profits rose to $14.3 billion, from $7.2 billion a year ago. Amazon said profits nearly doubled in the critical holiday period, as the company managed to control labor and supply costs better than expected and saw gains in its cloud-computing and advertising businesses.

The financial results were a surprise to some analysts who expected earnings to be more subdued as Amazon dealt with rising costs on a variety of fronts.

Amazon Q1 Guidance

Net sales are expected to be between $112.0 billion and $117.0 billion, or to grow between 3% and 8% compared with first-quarter 2021. This guidance anticipates an unfavorable impact of approximately 150 basis points from foreign exchange rates.

Operating income is expected to be between $3.0 billion and $6.0 billion, compared with $8.9 billion in first quarter of 2021. This guidance includes approximately $1.0 billion lower depreciation expense due to increases in the estimated useful lives of our servers and networking equipment beginning on January 1, 2022.

This guidance assumes, among other things, that no additional business acquisitions, restructurings, or legal settlements are concluded.

Here's what to watch in Amazon's upcoming report:

While Amazon doesn't provide guidance for earnings, it does so for operating income. Management expects first-quarter operating income to range from $3 billion to $6 billion, which represents a decline of 66% to 48% from the year-ago period.

Amazon sales may continue to be challenged on tougher prior-year comparisons, with 1Q results slowing to near the high end of guidance for a 3-8% increase.

For context, last big holiday quarter, Amazon's revenue increased 9% year over year to $137.4 billion, near the high end of the company's guidance range of $130 billion to $140 billion. By segment, sales in North America and Amazon Web Services rose 9% and 40%, respectively, while those in international edged down 1%.

Last quarter's net income was $14.3 billion, or $27.75 per share, up 97% year over year. This result demolished the analyst consensus estimate of $3.58 per share. But that's because the bottom line got a big boost from a pre-tax valuation gain of $11.8 billion from Amazon's common stock investment in electric vehicle maker Rivian Automotive, which held its initial public offering (IPO) in November.

Amazon Sales May Slow; Cloud, Advertising Intact

Easing two-year sales comparisons may accelerate the year-over-year growth rate in upcoming quarters. Covid-19 variants and rising costs for labor, transportation and freight are margin headwinds to the retail business, that get offset by strength in higher-margin advertising, subscription and cloud services.

Cloud growth is anticipated to be 36-37% in constant currency, which would be a modest deceleration from a strong 4Q, and don't expect any weakness in new signups due to economic and geopolitical concerns. The operating margin could be around 31%, adding over $5.5 billion in operating profit to the overall company figure.

Can Amazon's Q1 Earnings Be The Inflection Point?

Like other companies that import products, Amazon has been dealing with pandemic-driven global supply chain issues, which have increased costs. Its costs have also risen because of higher employee wages stemming at least in part from a tight labor market.

The company has been doing a good job controlling the impact on its results of these macroeconomic issues. Moreover, on last quarter's earnings call, CFO Brian Olsavsky said management expected supply chain issues to have less of an impact on first-quarter results relative to recent results.

It's clear that the market has been digesting Amazon's massive growth acceleration from the pandemic. But, investors should not consider it a "slow down" but rather a healthy normalization.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also shared meaningful insights in his first Annual Letter, Jassy emphasized:

This growth also created short-term logistics and cost challenges. Supply chains were disrupted in ways none of us had seen previously. As we were bringing this new capacity online, the labor market tightened considerably.

Combined with ocean, air, and trucking capacity becoming scarcer and more expensive, this created extra transportation and productivity costs. We hoped that the major impact from COVID-19 would recede as 2021 drew to a close, but then Omicron reared its head in December, which had worldwide ramifications, including impacting people's ability to work.

And then in late February, with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, fuel costs and inflation became bigger issues with which to contend. (Amazon's 2021 Letter to Shareholders)

This growth also created short-term logistics and cost challenges. Supply chains were disrupted in ways none of us had seen previously. As we were bringing this new capacity online, the labor market tightened considerably.

Nevertheless, the updated consensus estimates suggest that Amazon's revenue and profitability normalization could reach an inflection point in FQ1. Therefore, the Street remains optimistic about Amazon's ability to navigate these challenges. Moreover, we think it's credible that the Street has already priced in the expected weakness in Amazon's P&L for Q1.

Analyst Opinions

ClearBridge Investments Large Cap Growth Strategy has to say about Amazon.com, Inc. in its Q1 2022 investor letter:

"With Amazon’s capex build largely done in 2020 and 2021, we believe it is now set up to generate robust revenue growth and margin expansion in all three of its key segments: e-commerce, cloud (AWS) and advertising. Amazon rebounded off post-invasion lows on the strength we experienced in e-commerce."

Morgan Stanley remains confident of the company's outperformance through FY23. It added, "We are lowering FY22/23 EBIT by ~$5.6bn/$1.1bn (15%/2%). Cohen also owns 9.8% of Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ:BBBY).

Cohen recently gained three seats on Bed Bath & Beyond’s board. As a result, he is now fighting a war on two fronts. History tells us that most times, when an aggressor tries to fight two opponents at the same time rather than one, the outcome is generally unfavorable.

BBBY reported a fourth-quarter loss of 92 cents versus the analyst estimate of a four-cent profit. BBBY stock is down more than 9% on the news.

If Cohen is smart, he’ll stop the war on two fronts and focus on GameStop. If you’re an investor, I would caution against buying either stock. If Cohen’s not careful, he’ll hold the bag for both GameStop and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Here’s why.

Ryan Cohen Is No Warren Buffett

The idea for my commentary today is not original. Yahoo Finance editor-at-large Brian Sozzi recently reported some of the comments of Loop Capital Markets analyst Anthony Chukumba regarding Ryan Cohen’s large investments in both companies.

Here’s what Chukumba had to say about GameStop:

“He bought a big stake in GameStop. He became the chairman. He brought in all these executives and board members. The stock went up a ton. But have the fundamentals of the business gotten any better? Any better at all? The answer is no. And by the way, the stock peaked at $483. It’s now down to about $150,” Sozzi reported on April 12.

In February, I pointed out that savior Cohen sold Chewy (NYSE:CHWY) long before it proved it could consistently make money. I also said that his claim Chewy would have been successful no matter what products it sold fails to recognize that the pet care industry is one of the most stable in North America. So he hardly picked a tough one.

GME stock has rebounded nicely in recent weeks — it’s up 64% over the past month — as the meme stock investors piled back into Cohen’s original turnaround target.

In March, GameStop reported decent Q4 2021 sales — up 6.2% over Q4 2020 to $2.25 billion — with an adjusted loss of $1.86 a share, well off the analyst estimate of an 85-cent profit.

The company had nothing but good things to say about its strategy to transform GameStop’s business. If nothing else, Cohen is a good promoter.

GME Stock + BBBY = Potential Bloodbath

As I said in the intro, Bed Bath & Beyond reported a 92-cent loss in the fourth quarter, 96 cents worse than the consensus estimate. BBBY stock jumped 34% on March 7 after Cohen revealed his stake in the retailer. Its share price is now down 18% from its March 7 close.

So, Cohen now has two money-losing businesses to turn around. It’s tough enough to achieve success once. But he wants to do it twice. At this point, the smart investor would realize the probabilities of Cohen being successful on both are slim.

Chukumba is equally unimpressed by Cohen’s BBBY play:

“It’s the same thing with Bed Bath & Beyond. He bought a stake in Bed Bath & Beyond, but he said you can easily take this thing private. No you can’t. He also said the market cap of buybuy BABY is more than the entire market cap of the company. Wrong once again,” Sozzi reported. “Let’s rid ourselves of the notion he is the next Warren Buffett, the emperor has no clothes.”

He’s 100% on the mark.

The man has done little to alter either business, yet he’s ready to fight a war on two fronts. Unfortunately, this scenario has only one end — a bad one from where I sit.

Chewy’s Not Looking So Hot

Before ignoring my warning about betting on Cohen, remember that Chewy’s most recent quarterly report was a stinker. The company lost 15 cents a share in Q4 2021, seven cents worse than analyst expectations, while revenues were $2.39 billion, $30-million shy of the consensus.

For all of 2021, Chewy finished with a net loss of $73.8 million. It did make money on a non-GAAP adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) basis, but $6.6 million less than a year ago and with an adjusted EBITDA margin of less than 1%.

The smart thing Ryan Cohen’s done up to this point in his business career was to sell Chewy when the getting was good. Cohen also owns 9.8% of Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ:BBBY).Cohen recently gained three seats on Bed Bath & Beyond’s board. As a result, he is now fighting a war on two fronts. History tells us that most times, when an aggressor tries to fight two opponents at the same time rather than one, the outcome is generally unfavorable.BBBY reported a fourth-quarter loss of 92 cents versus the analyst estimate of a four-cent profit. BBBY stock is down more than 9% on the news.If Cohen is smart, he’ll stop the war on two fronts and focus on GameStop. If you’re an investor, I would caution against buying either stock. If Cohen’s not careful, he’ll hold the bag for both GameStop and Bed Bath & Beyond. Here’s why.Ryan Cohen Is No Warren BuffettThe idea for my commentary today is not original. Yahoo Finance editor-at-large Brian Sozzi recently reported some of the comments of Loop Capital Markets analyst Anthony Chukumba regarding Ryan Cohen’s large investments in both companies. Here’s what Chukumba had to say about GameStop:“He bought a big stake in GameStop. He became the chairman. He brought in all these executives and board members. The stock went up a ton. But have the fundamentals of the business gotten any better? Any better at all? The answer is no. And by the way, the stock peaked at $483. It’s now down to about $150,” Sozzi reported on April 12.In February, I pointed out that savior Cohen sold Chewy (NYSE:CHWY) long before it proved it could consistently make money. I also said that his claim Chewy would have been successful no matter what products it sold fails to recognize that the pet care industry is one of the most stable in North America. So he hardly picked a tough one.GME stock has rebounded nicely in recent weeks — it’s up 64% over the past month — as the meme stock investors piled back into Cohen’s original turnaround target. If nothing else, Cohen is a good promoter.GME Stock + BBBY = Potential BloodbathAs I said in the intro, Bed Bath & Beyond reported a 92-cent loss in the fourth quarter, 96 cents worse than the consensus estimate. BBBY stock jumped 34% on March 7 after Cohen revealed his stake in the retailer. Its share price is now down 18% from its March 7 close. So, Cohen now has two money-losing businesses to turn around. It’s tough enough to achieve success once. But he wants to do it twice. At this point, the smart investor would realize the probabilities of Cohen being successful on both are slim.Chukumba is equally unimpressed by Cohen’s BBBY play:“It’s the same thing with Bed Bath & Beyond. He bought a stake in Bed Bath & Beyond, but he said you can easily take this thing private. No you can’t. He also said the market cap of buybuy BABY is more than the entire market cap of the company. Wrong once again,” Sozzi reported. “Let’s rid ourselves of the notion he is the next Warren Buffett, the emperor has no clothes.”He’s 100% on the mark. The man has done little to alter either business, yet he’s ready to fight a war on two fronts. Unfortunately, this scenario has only one end — a bad one from where I sit.Chewy’s Not Looking So HotBefore ignoring my warning about betting on Cohen, remember that Chewy’s most recent quarterly report was a stinker. The company lost 15 cents a share in Q4 2021, seven cents worse than analyst expectations, while revenues were $2.39 billion, $30-million shy of the consensus. For all of 2021, Chewy finished with a net loss of $73.8 million. It did make money on a non-GAAP adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) basis, but $6.6 million less than a year ago and with an adjusted EBITDA margin of less than 1%.The smart thing Ryan Cohen’s done up to this point in his business career was to sell Chewy when the getting was good. That makes me think of Mark Cuban and the sale of Broadcast.com for $5.7 billion at the height of the dot-com bubble in 1999. Only Cuban took those winnings and built an empire, including the Dallas Mavericks.Cohen’s proven he’s no Warren Buffett or Mark Cuban. For this reason, I wouldn’t buy either.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1303,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9089900426,"gmtCreate":1649940205813,"gmtModify":1676534611335,"author":{"id":"3576457321753087","authorId":"3576457321753087","name":"AhChoo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/69b5e19fab8a39fc971e90d107be4cd0","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3576457321753087","idStr":"3576457321753087"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Marqeta, Inc.(MQ)$Buy?","listText":"$Marqeta, Inc.(MQ)$Buy?","text":"$Marqeta, Inc.(MQ)$Buy?","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/77b969ac71909b71ad15a867e83cfed4","width":"1125","height":"3889"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9089900426","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1291,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9089900105,"gmtCreate":1649940113688,"gmtModify":1676534611320,"author":{"id":"3576457321753087","authorId":"3576457321753087","name":"AhChoo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/69b5e19fab8a39fc971e90d107be4cd0","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3576457321753087","idStr":"3576457321753087"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Time to play!","listText":"Time to play!","text":"Time to play!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9089900105","repostId":"9016476123","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":9016476123,"gmtCreate":1649229403658,"gmtModify":1676534474180,"author":{"id":"3527667667103859","authorId":"3527667667103859","name":"TigerEvents","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c266ef25181ace18bec1262357bbe1a8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3527667667103859","idStr":"3527667667103859"},"themes":[],"title":"🏆【GAME】Hunting Eggs for Extra Saving!","htmlText":"Tiger has prepared some Easter gifts for you, please click here to check them out!Easter can still be a bonus-boosting. Thankfully, for owners of NIO stock, it’s rebounded nicely. As I write this, shares of the electric vehicle maker are trading around $22.23, and well off the 52-week low of $18.47.

When I last wrote about Nio, I said it was a slam-dunk buy under $20. Now flirting with its lowest levels in 18 months, management better be buying back its stock. If it doesn’t, I will have to reassess my bullish opinion of NIO stock. Here’s why.

NIO Stock Is Cheap Under $20

As I stated on Feb. 3, Nio’s market capitalization on Jan. 31, 2021, was $82 billion, the same as Ford’s (NYSE:F) a year later. In 13 months, Nio’s market cap lost 64% of its value, while Ford’s gained more than 61%.

Talk about two cars going in different directions. Ford’s printing money while Nio’s trying to get the attention of investors despite the fact it added 93,856 vehicles over 12 months through Jan. 31, an increase of 113%.

What did Ford do over the same period?

In the 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2021, its U.S. sales were down 6.8% to 1.91 million. Its European sales were down 9.9% to 878,648, and in China, it sold approximately 624,000 vehicles in 2021, a 3.7% year-over-year gain.

According to pg. 5 of its 2021 10-K, it sold 4.2 million vehicles last year worldwide, 300,000 less than in 2020 and 1.3 million less than 2019. Over the previous three years, Ford has lost almost 1% market share worldwide. Yet it was the one getting the valuation bump, not Nio.

It makes Little Sense

If you look at the two companies from an EV perspective and one considers the transition to electric a foregone conclusion — as I do despite — there is no question that Nio is giving as good as it gets on this front.

Ford makes a big stink about its push into EVs. In its December 2021 U.S. sales press release, it highlights that, “Ford electrified vehicles grew 36% faster than the segment overall in 2021 while achieving new sales records for the month of December and all of 2021.”

In the U.S., Ford sold 12,284 electrified vehicles, 121% higher than December 2020 and 4x faster than the overall segment in December. Yet its 10-K barely mentions any of this electrification excitement.

Ford sold 27,000 EVs in 2021, while Nio delivered 91,429, 2.4x that amount.

One last thing on the valuation front.

Ford finished 2021 with $103.0 billion in net debt on its balance sheet. Nio ended 2021 with $3.8 billion in net cash. Yet Ford is the one with the pumped-up valuation?

Look, I like the look of many of Ford’s newest vehicles — Mustang E-Mach, Bronco, and Maverick — but I don’t get the difference between the two companies’ valuations.

The Bottom Line

In the first nine months of 2021 through Sep. 30, Nio’s capital expenditures were $371 million. Annualize that, and it’s $494 million. So it’s got plenty of cash in reserve to handle a $1 billion buyback.

At current prices — and assuming a 25% premium for moving the stock higher due to its share repurchases — it could buy back 38.57 million American Depositary Shares (ADSs), or 3.5% of the outstanding ADSs.

It’s not a massive reduction, but it would signal to investors that enough is enough. Thankfully, for owners of NIO stock, it’s rebounded nicely. As I write this, shares of the electric vehicle maker are trading around $22.23, and well off the 52-week low of $18.47.When I last wrote about Nio, I said it was a slam-dunk buy under $20. Now flirting with its lowest levels in 18 months, management better be buying back its stock. If it doesn’t, I will have to reassess my bullish opinion of NIO stock. Here’s why.NIO Stock Is Cheap Under $20As I stated on Feb. 3, Nio’s market capitalization on Jan. 31, 2021, was $82 billion, the same as Ford’s (NYSE:F) a year later. In 13 months, Nio’s market cap lost 64% of its value, while Ford’s gained more than 61%.Talk about two cars going in different directions. Ford’s printing money while Nio’s trying to get the attention of investors despite the fact it added 93,856 vehicles over 12 months through Jan. 31, an increase of 113%.What did Ford do over the same period? In the 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2021, its U.S. sales were down 6.8% to 1.91 million. Its European sales were down 9.9% to 878,648, and in China, it sold approximately 624,000 vehicles in 2021, a 3.7% year-over-year gain.According to pg. 5 of its 2021 10-K, it sold 4.2 million vehicles last year worldwide, 300,000 less than in 2020 and 1.3 million less than 2019. Over the previous three years, Ford has lost almost 1% market share worldwide. Yet it was the one getting the valuation bump, not Nio.It makes Little SenseIf you look at the two companies from an EV perspective and one considers the transition to electric a foregone conclusion — as I do despite — there is no question that Nio is giving as good as it gets on this front.Ford makes a big stink about its push into EVs. In its December 2021 U.S. sales press release, it highlights that, “Ford electrified vehicles grew 36% faster than the segment overall in 2021 while achieving new sales records for the month of December and all of 2021.”In the U.S., Ford sold 12,284 electrified vehicles, 121% higher than December 2020 and 4x faster than the overall segment in December. Yet its 10-K barely mentions any of this electrification excitement.Ford sold 27,000 EVs in 2021, while Nio delivered 91,429, 2.4x that amount. One last thing on the valuation front.Ford finished 2021 with $103.0 billion in net debt on its balance sheet. Nio ended 2021 with $3.8 billion in net cash. Yet Ford is the one with the pumped-up valuation?Look, I like the look of many of Ford’s newest vehicles — Mustang E-Mach, Bronco, and Maverick — but I don’t get the difference between the two companies’ valuations. The Bottom LineIn the first nine months of 2021 through Sep. 30, Nio’s capital expenditures were $371 million. Annualize that, and it’s $494 million. So it’s got plenty of cash in reserve to handle a $1 billion buyback. At current prices — and assuming a 25% premium for moving the stock higher due to its share repurchases — it could buy back 38.57 million American Depositary Shares (ADSs), or 3.5% of the outstanding ADSs.It’s not a massive reduction, but it would signal to investors that enough is enough. Its shares are too cheap to mess around.Further, as Nio rolls out its fourth (ET7) and fifth vehicles, the cash flow generation will continue to accelerate, adding even more net cash to the balance sheet. Ford, in the meantime, will have to deliver near-perfection on the EV front if it ever wants to get a price-to-sales ratio above one.The announcement alone should help move the share price a few dollars higher. From where I sit, it seems like an intelligent capital allocation lever for management to pull at this point in the proceedings.I’ll be watching in the coming weeks for an announcement from the company.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":302,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9059188129,"gmtCreate":1654311628761,"gmtModify":1676535430071,"author":{"id":"3576457321753087","authorId":"3576457321753087","name":"AhChoo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/69b5e19fab8a39fc971e90d107be4cd0","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3576457321753087","idStr":"3576457321753087"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"👌🏻","listText":"👌🏻","text":"👌🏻","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9059188129","repostId":"1175826570","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1117,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9087022324,"gmtCreate":1650933569728,"gmtModify":1676534818106,"author":{"id":"3576457321753087","authorId":"3576457321753087","name":"AhChoo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/69b5e19fab8a39fc971e90d107be4cd0","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3576457321753087","idStr":"3576457321753087"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Awesome 👍🏻","listText":"Awesome 👍🏻","text":"Awesome 👍🏻","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9087022324","repostId":"1167228649","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1167228649","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1651112737,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1167228649?lang=&edition=full_marsco","pubTime":"2022-04-28 10:25","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Amazon Earnings Preview: Sales May Slow; Cloud, Advertising Intact","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1167228649","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Amazon is slated to report its first-quarter 2022 results after the closing bell on Thursday, April ","content":"

Amazon is slated to report its first-quarter 2022 results after the closing bell on Thursday, April 28.

Wall Street expects Q1 revenue to rise 7.2% year over year.

We still expect revenue acceleration and margin expansion (even through higher fuel costs) to drive outperformance."

However, BNP Paribas earned the ire of bullish Amazon holders as it issued Amazon stock's "first sell rating since 2020." It highlighted: "Amazon's capital spending is going to be much higher than the market expects, while profit margins will be hurt by inflation shocks. The stock has been underperforming big tech peers and we expect that to continue."

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Amazon Earnings Preview: Sales May Slow; Cloud, Advertising Intact
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nAmazon Earnings Preview: Sales May Slow; Cloud, Advertising Intact\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Tiger Newspress
\n
2022-04-28 10:25
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

Amazon is slated to report its first-quarter 2022 results after the closing bell on Thursday, April 28.

Wall Street expects Q1 revenue to rise 7.2% year over year. Analysts also project earnings per share to drop 46%.Latest ResultsAmazon reported Q4 EPS of $27.75. Revenues grew 9% year-over-year to $137.4 billion, almost in line with the consensus estimate of $137.56 billion.Profits rose to $14.3 billion, from $7.2 billion a year ago. Amazon said profits nearly doubled in the critical holiday period, as the company managed to control labor and supply costs better than expected and saw gains in its cloud-computing and advertising businesses. The financial results were a surprise to some analysts who expected earnings to be more subdued as Amazon dealt with rising costs on a variety of fronts.Amazon Q1 GuidanceNet sales are expected to be between $112.0 billion and $117.0 billion, or to grow between 3% and 8% compared with first-quarter 2021. This guidance anticipates an unfavorable impact of approximately 150 basis points from foreign exchange rates.Operating income is expected to be between $3.0 billion and $6.0 billion, compared with $8.9 billion in first quarter of 2021. This guidance includes approximately $1.0 billion lower depreciation expense due to increases in the estimated useful lives of our servers and networking equipment beginning on January 1, 2022.This guidance assumes, among other things, that no additional business acquisitions, restructurings, or legal settlements are concluded. Here's what to watch in Amazon's upcoming report:While Amazon doesn't provide guidance for earnings, it does so for operating income. Management expects first-quarter operating income to range from $3 billion to $6 billion, which represents a decline of 66% to 48% from the year-ago period.Amazon sales may continue to be challenged on tougher prior-year comparisons, with 1Q results slowing to near the high end of guidance for a 3-8% increase. For context, last big holiday quarter, Amazon's revenue increased 9% year over year to $137.4 billion, near the high end of the company's guidance range of $130 billion to $140 billion. By segment, sales in North America and Amazon Web Services rose 9% and 40%, respectively, while those in international edged down 1%.Last quarter's net income was $14.3 billion, or $27.75 per share, up 97% year over year. This result demolished the analyst consensus estimate of $3.58 per share. But that's because the bottom line got a big boost from a pre-tax valuation gain of $11.8 billion from Amazon's common stock investment in electric vehicle maker Rivian Automotive, which held its initial public offering (IPO) in November.Amazon Sales May Slow; Cloud, Advertising IntactEasing two-year sales comparisons may accelerate the year-over-year growth rate in upcoming quarters. Covid-19 variants and rising costs for labor, transportation and freight are margin headwinds to the retail business, that get offset by strength in higher-margin advertising, subscription and cloud services.Cloud growth is anticipated to be 36-37% in constant currency, which would be a modest deceleration from a strong 4Q, and don't expect any weakness in new signups due to economic and geopolitical concerns. The operating margin could be around 31%, adding over $5.5 billion in operating profit to the overall company figure. Can Amazon's Q1 Earnings Be The Inflection Point?Like other companies that import products, Amazon has been dealing with pandemic-driven global supply chain issues, which have increased costs. But, investors should not consider it a \"slow down\" but rather a healthy normalization.Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also shared meaningful insights in his first Annual Letter, Jassy emphasized:This growth also created short-term logistics and cost challenges. Supply chains were disrupted in ways none of us had seen previously. As we were bringing this new capacity online, the labor market tightened considerably.Combined with ocean, air, and trucking capacity becoming scarcer and more expensive, this created extra transportation and productivity costs.

If nothing else, Cohen is a good promoter.

GME Stock + BBBY = Potential Bloodbath

As I said in the intro, Bed Bath & Beyond reported a 92-cent loss in the fourth quarter, 96 cents worse than the consensus estimate. He bought a stake in Bed Bath & Beyond, but he said you can easily take this thing private. No you can’t. He also said the market cap of buybuy BABY is more than the entire market cap of the company.
