The Russell 1000 tracks large-capitalization stocks—and in order to be included in the latest index reconstitution, stocks had to have market caps of at least $7.3 billion on May 7.
\n
As one of the stocks favored by retail traders this year, GameStop (ticker: GME) met that threshold because it had an $11.2 billion market cap by the deadline, while AMC Entertainment(AMC) didn’t. That said, AMC has rocketed higher since May 7, multiplying by more than five times and surpassing GameStop’s market value—hitting a recent $27 billion compared to GameStop’s $15 billion.
\n
It may seem counterintuitive, but the Russell 1000 “promotion” may actually be bad for GameStop’s stock,as Barron’s explained earlier this month.Funds that track the small-capRussell 2000will have to sell GameStop shares on June 28, and funds that track the Russell 1000 will have to buy them. Three times as much money is invested in funds that track the Russell 1000, but GameStop’s overall weight in that index will be much lower than it has been in the Russell 2000. In the Russell 2000, GameStop made up about half a percentage point of the index, while it will be less than 0.1% of the Russell 1000. The Russell 1000 tracks large-capitalization stocks—and in order to be included in the latest index reconstitution, stocks had to have market caps of at least $7.3 billion on May 7.\nAs one of the stocks favored by retail traders this year, GameStop (ticker: GME) met that threshold because it had an $11.2 billion market cap by the deadline, while AMC Entertainment(AMC) didn’t. That said, AMC has rocketed higher since May 7, multiplying by more than five times and surpassing GameStop’s market value—hitting a recent $27 billion compared to GameStop’s $15 billion.\nIt may seem counterintuitive, but the Russell 1000 “promotion” may actually be bad for GameStop’s stock,as Barron’s explained earlier this month.Funds that track the small-capRussell 2000will have to sell GameStop shares on June 28, and funds that track the Russell 1000 will have to buy them. GameStop will look tiny next to behemoths like Apple(AAPL).\nExperts like Jefferies strategist Steven DeSanctis expect that there will be net selling in GameStop of about 5 million shares, or about half of the stock’s recent average daily volume, after the rebalancing.\nMeanwhile, AMC will be the largest member of the Russell 2000 by far—more than three times as large as its nearest competitor as of last week.
GameStop will look tiny next to behemoths like Apple(AAPL).
\n
Experts like Jefferies strategist Steven DeSanctis expect that there will be net selling in GameStop of about 5 million shares, or about half of the stock’s recent average daily volume, after the rebalancing.
\n
Meanwhile, AMC will be the largest member of the Russell 2000 by far—more than three times as large as its nearest competitor as of last week. The company said it would use the proceeds for \"general corporate purposes, which may include working capital, the repayment, refinancing, redemption or repurchase of existing indebtedness, capital expenditures and other investments.\"
\n
However, the company also disclosed that the board of directors decided not to ask shareholders for permission to sell up to 500 million additional shares at its upcoming annual shareholders meeting, a proposal that had caused some upheaval with analysts and investors. Chief Executive Adam Aron had said last week that if investors approved the plan, he would promise not to sell any of those shares in 2021; the 43 million shares that will be sold were approved by shareholders years ago.
\n
AMC also disclosed preliminary financial results for its quarter ended March 31, as the chain began to reopen more theaters as COVID-19 restrictions eased. AMC said that it expects to lose $567.2 million to $572.2 million on revenue of approximately $148.3 million. In the same quarter a year ago, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to shutter theaters worldwide, AMC reported a loss of more than $2 billion -- mostly due to noncash impairment charges from revaluing its properties -- on sales of $941.5 million.
\n
Analysts on average were expecting AMC to lose $514.9 million on sales of $158.4 million in the first quarter, according to FactSet.
\n
AMC has raised more than $2 billion in share sales, debt offerings and other moves since last fall, as theater closures walloped its finances. In the podcast appearance last week in which he promised not to sell any of the 500 million shares if investors approved that plan, Aron noted the authorization to sell 43 million shares was still active, but said \"we haven't made any decisions yet.\"
\n
\"If we need to raise some cash in the short term, remember we already have 43 million shares that are out there that were authorized in the year 2013 that we could use if we wish to raise some cash, if we decide that's a good idea,\" Aron said in an interview that AMC also disclosed in an SEC filing . \"We have made no decisions yet. The company said it would use the proceeds for \"general corporate purposes, which may include working capital, the repayment, refinancing, redemption or repurchase of existing indebtedness, capital expenditures and other investments.\"\nHowever, the company also disclosed that the board of directors decided not to ask shareholders for permission to sell up to 500 million additional shares at its upcoming annual shareholders meeting, a proposal that had caused some upheaval with analysts and investors. Chief Executive Adam Aron had said last week that if investors approved the plan, he would promise not to sell any of those shares in 2021; the 43 million shares that will be sold were approved by shareholders years ago.\nAMC also disclosed preliminary financial results for its quarter ended March 31, as the chain began to reopen more theaters as COVID-19 restrictions eased. AMC said that it expects to lose $567.2 million to $572.2 million on revenue of approximately $148.3 million. In the same quarter a year ago, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to shutter theaters worldwide, AMC reported a loss of more than $2 billion -- mostly due to noncash impairment charges from revaluing its properties -- on sales of $941.5 million.\nAnalysts on average were expecting AMC to lose $514.9 million on sales of $158.4 million in the first quarter, according to FactSet.\nAMC has raised more than $2 billion in share sales, debt offerings and other moves since last fall, as theater closures walloped its finances. In the podcast appearance last week in which he promised not to sell any of the 500 million shares if investors approved that plan, Aron noted the authorization to sell 43 million shares was still active, but said \"we haven't made any decisions yet.\"\n\"If we need to raise some cash in the short term, remember we already have 43 million shares that are out there that were authorized in the year 2013 that we could use if we wish to raise some cash, if we decide that's a good idea,\" Aron said in an interview that AMC also disclosed in an SEC filing . \"We have made no decisions yet. We are thinking about it, but we haven't made any decisions yet.\"\nAMC also disclosed in Tuesday's filing that as of March 31, 585 of its 590 U.S. theaters had reopened at limited capacity of 15% to 60%, and 97 of 354 international theaters it leases or runs in partnership with others had reopened at 25% to 50% capacity.\nShares dipped between 1% and 2% in the extended session following the disclosure Tuesday evening.
