Other tech stocks have delivered a similar performance, but it may be a few company-related developments that are keeping GOOG stock on an upwards trajectory. In the past week, the tech giant has made two announcements related to how it plans to capitalize on the artificial intelligence (or AI) megatrend. To some, these developments may signal higher prices ahead. Coupled with a tech sector rebound, it may seem possible that AI could result in an even greater earnings comeback over the next year.A rebound for Alphabet’s overall business may arrive on or ahead of schedule. However, don’t assume that the latest AI-related news with the FAANG component is a bona fide game changer. These developments do little to improve the company’s AI-related prospects.GOOG Stock and the Latest AI HeadlinesOn April 5, Alphabet’s Google subsidiary released details about the TPU v4, one of its AI supercomputers. Namely, the company touted that this system, which uses proprietary chips, beats systems run using Nvidia’s (NASDAQ: NVDA) A100 chips in terms of computing speed. On April 6, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the company plans to eventually integrate chat AI features into its flagship Google search engine. As you may recall, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) beat Alphabet to the chase in this area by quickly integrating chat AI technology from ChatGPT developer OpenAI into its Bing search engine back in February. With both these developments, it’s not a surprise that GOOG stock has moved slightly higher. In fact, it’s a bit of a surprise that GOOG hasn’t rallied on this news. Some of the headlines behind these developments have implied that Alphabet is beating Nvidia in the area of AI chips and that the company is playing serious catch-up with Microsoft in generative AI search. Then again, maybe it makes sense that this news has solicited a modestly positive reaction.Still an Underdog in the AI WarsYou don’t have to dig deep to figure out that the latest AI-related headlines with GOOG stock are more “nothing burger” than needle-mover. While the aforementioned news about the TPU v4 isn’t a bad thing, stating that “Google is beating Nvidia” is a bit of an exaggeration. As critics are quick to point out, while the company’s in-house graphic processing units (or GPUs) outperform the A100 GPU, Nvidia now has a new AI GPU (the H100), which has exponentially greater computing power than the A100, not to mention Google’s chips. In short, the company is bragging that its system can beat yesterday’s technology, not today’s technology. When it comes to the integration of generative AI features into Google search, an important caveat is that, while stating a launch is forthcoming, Pichai did not offer a specific launch date. After the poorly-received public unveiling of the AI platform that will provide these features (Bard), the company may be looking to fine-tune it before it goes live on its most widely-used online property. It may be a while before this technology starts to make a difference with regard to Alphabet’s overall financial performance. The TakeawayNot only will it take time for generative AI to have an impact on the performance of Google Search. It’s not certain that integrating this technology will improve the profitability of the platform. At best, it may merely enable Google to minimize market share losses to Bing. At worst, between increased competition bringing down search ad rates, and generative AI’s computing requirements raising search costs, this technological breakthrough could be detrimental to the profit margins of Alphabet’s main cash cow.Don’t get me wrong. GOOG may have room to head higher over the next twelve months. Again, the economic environment could improve for tech. Coupled with Alphabet’s aggressive cost-cutting measures, this could result in a big earnings rebound. However, when it comes to the longer-term bull case, which hinges more heavily on AI, a lot remains up in the air for GOOG stock.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"GOOGL":0.9,"GOOG":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2821,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945556313,"gmtCreate":1681523433333,"gmtModify":1681523437439,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Musk must","listText":"Musk must","text":"Musk must","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945556313","repostId":"2327177777","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3277,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945558877,"gmtCreate":1681523247600,"gmtModify":1681523251007,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945558877","repostId":"2327083177","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3410,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945567071,"gmtCreate":1681520083793,"gmtModify":1681520087140,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good ","listText":"Good ","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945567071","repostId":"2327083177","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3039,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945564740,"gmtCreate":1681520063381,"gmtModify":1681520067194,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good ","listText":"Good ","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945564740","repostId":"1122997358","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1122997358","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1681517940,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1122997358?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-04-15 08:19","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Count on AMD Stock to Defy the Bears With AI-Fueled Comeback","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1122997358","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"AMD (AMD) has come up smartly off its late 2022 lows. Its story is now all about “pervasive AI,” sold","content":"
\n
AMD (AMD) has come up smartly off its late 2022 lows. Its story is now all about “pervasive AI,” sold to servers and device makers. The AI story has just begun to unfold.Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: ...
\n\nSource Link\n\n
\n","source":"investorplace","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The tech wreck in 2022 cut AMD by 60%. It is now staging a comeback, trading above $93, a market cap of nearly $154 billion.AMD’s acquisition of Xilinx last year brought it Vitis AI, an artificial intelligence development platform. AMD’s AI Engine handles both signal processing and machine learning, both key to what I call the Machine Internet. AI isn’t just about how you interact with computers. It’s how computers interact with each other. AMD stock is set for another big move. The Bear CaseDespite this bears are lining up against AMD stock. PC sales are crashing. Prices for gaming cards are falling. Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) is designing its own silicon to compete with AMD for their own business. The bear market did not make AMD stock cheap. It still sells for an eye-popping 112 times earnings and offers no dividend. Stock buybacks that once supported the price have been sharply reduced.Yet 19 of the 25 analysts following AMD at Tipranks are telling clients to buy the stock. One expects it to double over the next year. The Bull CaseOur David Moadel thinks the bad news is priced in. When AMD next reports earnings on May 2, investors may be in for a positive surprise. The folks at Piper Sandlin agree, giving AMD stock an overweight rating. Other analysts are calling this a buy the dip opportunity.AMD is continuing to crush rival Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) and the whole world now knows it. Price cuts have created global bargains, with AMD-based laptops selling in India for the equivalent of under $600. Software is now how chips advance, and AMD continues to deliver new software. Its new video accelerator promises to dramatically improve local as well as long-distance streaming.Xilinx, which makes Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), chips that can be pre-loaded with software, looks like a smart acquisition. It lets AMD sell systems instead of just chips. The bearishness of some should provide a floor for AMD stock, the bulls say.The more customers treat generative AI the way they do conventional search, the more important AMD chips on both the client and server side become, the bulls add. AMD calls this next stage of the business “pervasive AI,” driving demand in both edge devices and data centers. The Bottom LineI bought AMD as it was falling and remain underwater on the investment. That doesn’t mean I’m selling. Technology is how productivity advances. It’s how inflation is crushed. AI is scaring people now, because the output looks human, but it has been delivering productivity gains for years. Inflation creates huge incentives for cutting costs and buying technology is the best way to do that.I also talk about buying the jockey, not the horse. I have believed in Su’s management since she became CEO. I see no reason to change that view.AMD stock will bounce around for some time, but when I look at the future, I see strength.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AMD":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2951,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945281015,"gmtCreate":1681485731238,"gmtModify":1681485734765,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945281015","repostId":"1164983793","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1164983793","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1681479497,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1164983793?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-04-14 21:38","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Bank Stocks Rallied in Morning Trading, with JPMorgan Jumping Over 6%","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1164983793","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Bank stocks rallied in morning trading, with JPMorgan jumping over 6%.","content":"

Bank stocks rallied in morning trading, with JPMorgan jumping over 6%.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The planemaker said it was formally notified of the issue a day earlier by Spirit AeroSystems Holdings Inc., which assembles most of the 737’s aluminum frame. The problem involves two of the eight fittings that attach the jet’s vertical tail to the rear end of its fuselage and affects a portion of the 737 jets built since 2019.The problem will likely impact a significant number of undelivered aircraft as well as those stored at Boeing, according to the company. Boeing said it expects deliveries to decline in the near-term as it inspects affected aircraft.Boeing stock tumbled as much as 4.7% in late trading, after rising 0.6% to $213.59 at the close in New York. Spirit AeroSystems dropped more than 8%.The disruption is a setback for Boeing just as it was regaining its footing following years of turmoil caused by the pandemic and a global grounding of the Max. The planemaker had been briefing customers on plans to increase production rates of the Max, Bloomberg reported last week. Days later, Boeing reported a surge in quarterly deliveries that outpaced rival Airbus SE for the first time in about five years. It’s too soon to tell if the quality flaw will affect Boeing’s plans to speed up 737 production. The planemaker is working to learn the extent of the problem and what’s required to address it, according to the company. The issue involves Boeing’s best-selling 737 Max 8, Max 7, a high-density version, along with a militarized 737 known as the P-8. Not every jet is affected. Spirit AeroSystems and Boeing said they have identified the production numbers of the planes with the problematic fittings. What Bloomberg Intelligence Says:“The stoppage is concerning given the airplane is vital to Boeing’s turnaround. Its importance likely means a remedy will be urgently pursued, though reworking it could be costly and an extended pause would significantly hurt commercial profit, cash generation and the balance sheet.”— George Ferguson, BI aerospace industry analystClick here to read the research“We have processes in place to address these of types of production issues upon identification, which we are following,” Spirit said in a statement. “Spirit is working to develop an inspection and repair for the affected fuselages.” The inspections will take place in an accessible area of the structure. That means any rework is likely to be far less disruptive than Boeing’s repairs to address structural imperfections with the 787 Dreamliner, the company said. Deliveries of those planes were halted for more than a year, starting in mid-2021, over tiny manufacturing flaws in the jet’s carbon-composite frame. In some instances they could only be reached by ripping out aircraft cabins.Boeing temporarily paused Dreamliner deliveries again earlier this year after learning of a documentation issue with a fuselage component. Analysts expect Boeing officials to provide updates on the company’s efforts to stabilize 737 and 787 production at its April 18 annual meeting and first-quarter earnings report on April 26.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"SPR":0.9,"BA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1008,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945815844,"gmtCreate":1681427642988,"gmtModify":1681427646667,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945815844","repostId":"1145720420","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1145720420","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1681427383,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1145720420?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-04-14 07:09","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Fed’s Emergency Loans to Banks Fall For Fourth Straight Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1145720420","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Borrowing from new facility falls for first time since openingCombined loans to banks totaled $139.5","content":"
\n
Borrowing from new facility falls for first time since openingCombined loans to banks totaled $139.5 billion in latest weekBanks reduced their borrowings from two Federal Reserve backstop lending ...
\n\nSource Link\n\n
\n","source":"lsy1584095487587","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; It was the first decline in lending from the facility since it was created last month.Emergency Lending Drops | Banks' demand for cash from the Fed falls for fourth straight weekThe continued easing in financial institutions’ demand for liquidity from the Fed suggests stress in the banking sector is abating. Several Fed officials said as much over the past week.“I’m not ready to declare all clear but there are hopeful signs that these risks are now better understood and calm is being restored,” Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari said Tuesday during a town hall event at Montana State University in Bozeman. The discount window is the Fed’s oldest liquidity backstop for banks. Loans can be extended for 90 days and banks can post a broad range of collateral. The BTFP was opened March 12 after the Fed declared emergency conditions following the collapse of California’s Silicon Valley Bank and New York’s Signature Bank. Credit can be extended for one year under the program and collateral guidelines are tighter.Thursday’s report “confirms that acute phase of the current banking strains continues to gradually wind down,” Evercore ISI’s Krishna Guha said in a note to clients.Fed loans to bridge banks established by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to resolve SVB and Signature Bank fell to $172.6 billion in the week through April 12, from $174.6 billion the previous week.Foreign central banks had $30 billion outstanding in the Fed’s Foreign and International Monetary Authorities repurchase-agreement facility in the week through April 12, down from $40 billion.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"WFC":0.9,"BAC":0.9,"C":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1288,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945189857,"gmtCreate":1681401989880,"gmtModify":1681401993549,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945189857","repostId":"1172624528","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":814,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945180761,"gmtCreate":1681401969954,"gmtModify":1681401973448,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yes","listText":"Yes","text":"Yes","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945180761","repostId":"2326291931","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2326291931","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1681356033,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2326291931?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-04-13 11:20","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Could Tesla Stock Soar to $252?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2326291931","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"One analyst thinks the electric car maker's stock has 34% upside.","content":"
\n
Following one analyst's bearish note last week on Tesla stock, another analyst is making the opposite assertion. An analyst from Baird said on Tuesday morning that shares could soar to $252. That translates to 39% upside from where the stock is trading on Wednesday and is 68% higher than the $150 price target set by Bernstein last week. What exactly has Baird so bullish on Tesla stock? One key factor is the company's market-leading operating margins, which allow Tesla to price its vehicles competitively -- case in point is Tesla's most recent round of price cuts to its vehicles. Here's a closer look at the analyst's optimistic view for the growth stock.Reiterating a $252 price targetAs interest rates rise, making it more difficult for consumers to finance new vehicle purchases, Tesla is doing what it can to help the consumer (and hopefully its business). The company has rolled out a handful of price cuts this year, with its most recent one hitting its website last week. On Thursday evening, Tesla lowered the price of its flagship Model S and X vehicles by $5,000 each. In addition, it cut prices of its more affordable Model 3 and Y vehicles by $1,000 and $2,000, respectively. Baird, which reiterated its $252 price target for the stock on Tuesday, seems to think these price cuts demonstrate Tesla's market dominance. The firm said in a note to investors that the automaker should be able to roll out these price cuts while maintaining industry-leading operating margins. Indeed, Baird asserts that Tesla is better positioned than any of its auto manufacturer peers to endure a weak macroeconomic environment. The firm's price target was first set for the stock late last year, when Baird lowered its price target for shares from $316 to $252. The lowered price target, Baird analyst Ben Kallo explained, reflected an environment in which demand for Tesla vehicles could slow. However, the target still implied huge upside from where the stock was trading at the time. Kallo's confidence stemmed from an expectation that three catalysts will help the company this year: growing production capacity at its factories, upcoming vehicle launches, and a fast-growing energy business.Tesla stock is up more than 66% since Baird set its $252 price target for the stock. Is Tesla stock a buy?Investors, of course, shouldn't buy a stock simply because one analyst has a high price target for shares. At the end of the day, do your own due diligence to come up with an estimate of a stock's fair value before considering making an investment. But the stock does look somewhat attractive at 52 times earnings. Considering how rapidly the company has been growing its sales, this seems like a reasonable (if not low) valuation. Tesla recently announced that its first-quarter deliveries rose 36% year over year -- an acceleration from the 31% growth posted in the prior quarter.Further, Tesla's business generates a huge stream of cash. Free cash flow was $7.6 billion in 2022, up from about $5 billion in 2021 and less than $3 billion in 2020.But justifying a valuation of $252 per Tesla share requires quite a lot of imagination. While it's certainly possible, seemingly everything would have to go right for the electric car company -- during a period when macroeconomic challenges could worsen substantially.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1368,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945180397,"gmtCreate":1681401917619,"gmtModify":1681401921224,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945180397","repostId":"1163213615","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":933,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9945117218,"gmtCreate":1681401897434,"gmtModify":1681401899296,"author":{"id":"3586655655659820","authorId":"3586655655659820","name":"sunshine138","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23149c63a63bfeec1572cc27e1322750","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586655655659820","authorIdStr":"3586655655659820"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9945117218","repostId":"1129752155","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1129752155","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1681372958,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1129752155?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-04-13 16:02","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Hot Chinese ADRs Rallied in Premarket Trading, with Bilibili Jumping over 5%","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1129752155","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Hot Chinese ADRs rallied in premarket trading, with Bilibili jumping over 5%.","content":"

Hot Chinese ADRs rallied in premarket trading, with Bilibili jumping over 5%.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Johnson and Goldman Sachs as first-quarter earnings season kicked into gear.

The Dow and Nasdaq ended with fractional declines on the day.

J&J shares fell 2.8% after the healthcare conglomerate cautioned investors over the lingering impact of inflation-driven costs this year. Goldman shares dropped 1.7% after the Wall Street firm's profit fell 19% as dealmaking and bond trading slumped.

The early quarterly results from S&P 500 companies come as investors have been bracing for a gloomy reporting season, fearing the economy may be on the cusp of a downturn.

"What we are seeing here is the calm before the storm as far as earnings go," said Brad McMillan, chief investment officer of Commonwealth Financial Network. "The market is just trying to see, do we have some upside here or not, and I think it is really going to come down to earnings over the next couple of weeks."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 10.55 points, or 0.03%, to 33,976.63, the S&P 500 gained 3.55 points, or 0.09%, to 4,154.87 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 4.31 points, or 0.04%, to 12,153.41.

The CBOE Volatility index, also known as Wall Street's fear gauge, fell to its lowest point since January 2022 during the session.

The heavyweight technology sector rose 0.4%, helped by a 2.5% increase in shares of Nvidia Corp after HSBC raised its recommendation on the graphics chipmaker to "buy" from "reduce."

The healthcare sector dropped 0.7%, weighed down by J&J shares.

S&P 500 company earnings are expected to have declined 4.8% in the first quarter from a year earlier, according to Refinitiv IBES data as of Friday. Investors have zeroed in on bank results after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank last month set off concerns about potential systemic risks.

"While the big money center banks did very well as a whole, the focus I think is going to be on the regional banks because that is really where the center of the fallout was," said Paul Nolte, senior wealth advisor and market strategist at Murphy & Sylvest Wealth Management.

Shares of Netflix Inc fell in initial after-hours trading on Tuesday following the company's quarterly report.

The S&P 500 is trading near two-month highs as investors await a deluge of earnings and assess the interest rate path ahead of an expected 25 basis point increase at the Federal Reserve's meeting early next month.

St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard told Reuters on Tuesday the U.S. central bank should continue raising rates on the back of recent data showing persistent inflation. Separately, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said the Fed most likely has one more rate hike ahead.

In other earnings news, Lockheed Martin Corp's shares rose 2.4% after the U.S. weapons maker's first-quarter results surpassed Wall Street targets despite parts and labor shortages.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by a 1.01-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.29-to-1 ratio favored decliners.

The S&P 500 posted 28 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 66 new highs and 143 new lows.

About 9.8 billion shares changed hands in U.S. exchanges, compared with the 10.7 billion daily average over the last 20 sessions.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
US STOCKS-S&P 500 Ekes Out Gain As Tech Supports, J&J, Goldman Disappoint
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nUS STOCKS-S&P 500 Ekes Out Gain As Tech Supports, J&J, Goldman Disappoint\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Reuters
\n
2023-04-19 04:26
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

The S&P 500 eked out a slim gain on Tuesday after strength in some big technology stocks countered disappointing quarterly reports from Johnson & Johnson and Goldman Sachs as first-quarter earnings season kicked into gear.

The Dow and Nasdaq ended with fractional declines on the day.

J&J shares fell 2.8% after the healthcare conglomerate cautioned investors over the lingering impact of inflation-driven costs this year. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said SVB was one of a few banks she was "monitoring very carefully." Reaction poured in from several analysts who discussed the bank's liquidity risk.

California regulators closed Silicon Valley Bank and handed the wreckage over to the Federal Deposit Insurance Administration later on Friday.

Below is the same list of 10 banks we highlighted on Thursday that showed similar red flags to those shown by SVB Financial through the fourth quarter. This time, we will show how much they reported in unrealized losses on securities -- an item that played an important role in SVB's crisis.

Below that is a screen of U.S. banks with at least $10 billion in total assets, showing those that appeared to have the greatest exposure to unrealized securities losses, as a percentage of total capital, as of Dec. 31.

First, a quick look at SVB

Some media reports have referred to SVB of Santa Clara, Calif., as a small bank, but it had $212 billion in total assets as of Dec. 31, making it the 17th largest bank in the Russell 3000 Index as of Dec. 31. That makes it the largest U.S. bank failure since Washington Mutual in 2008.

One unique aspect of SVB was its decades-long focus on the venture capital industry. The bank's loan growth had been slowing as interest rates rose. Meanwhile, when announcing its $21 billion dollars in securities sales on Thursday, SVB said it had taken the action not only to lower its interest-rate risk, but because "client cash burn has remained elevated and increased further in February, resulting in lower deposits than forecasted."

SVB estimated it would book a $1.8 billion loss on the securities sale and said it would raise $2.25 billion in capital through two offerings of new shares and a convertible bond offering. That offering wasn't completed.

So this appears to be an example of what can go wrong with a bank focused on a particular industry. The combination of a balance sheet heavy with securities and relatively light on loans, in a rising-rate environment in which bond prices have declined and in which depositors specific to that industry are themselves suffering from a decline in cash, led to a liquidity problem.

Unrealized losses on securities

Banks leverage their capital by gathering deposits or borrowing money either to lend the money out or purchase securities. They earn the spread between their average yield on loans and investments and their average cost for funds.

The securities investments are held in two buckets:

In its regulatory Consolidated Financial Statements for Holding Companies--FR Y-9C, filed with the Federal Reserve, SVB Financial, reported a negative $1.911 billion in accumulated other comprehensive income as of Dec. 31. That is line 26.b on Schedule HC of the report, for those keeping score at home. You can look up regulatory reports for any U.S. bank holding company, savings and loan holding company or subsidiary institution at the Federal Financial Institution Examination Council's National Information Center. Be sure to get the name of the company or institution right -- or you may be looking at the wrong entity.

Here's how accumulated other comprehensive income (AOCI) is defined in the report: "Includes, but is not limited to, net unrealized holding gains (losses) on available-for-sale securities, accumulated net gains (losses) on cash flow hedges, cumulative foreign currency translation adjustments, and accumulated defined benefit pension and other postretirement plan adjustments."

In other words, it was mostly unrealized losses on SVB's available-for-sale securities. The bank booked an estimated $1.8 billion loss when selling "substantially all" of these securities on March 8.

The list of 10 banks with unfavorable interest margin trends

On the regulatory call reports, AOCI is added to regulatory capital. Since SVB's AOCI was negative (because of its unrealized losses on AFS securities) as of Dec. 31, it lowered the company's total equity capital.

So a fair way to gauge the negative AOCI to the bank's total equity capital would be to divide the negative AOCI by total equity capital less AOCI -- effectively adding the unrealized losses back to total equity capital for the calculation.

Getting back to our list of 10 banks that raised similar red margin flags to those of SVB, here's the same group, in the same order, showing negative AOCI as a percentage of total equity capital as of Dec. 31.
