Despite economic headwinds, Apple is managing to do well

Fears of a coming (or already present) recession are not unfounded, and inflation is eroding wage gains and savings. In a macroeconomic environment such as this, consumers tend to hold off spending on things they may want but don't need. That could easily describe many of Apple's products. A new smartphone is nice, as is a sleek pair of Bluetooth headphones. In reality, no one needs brand new versions of those things that often sell for well-above-average prices.

This would suggest Apple is going to have a rough go of it. And while these challenging headwinds have certainly impacted its earnings, the tech giant is managing surprisingly well. In its latest quarterly update (the third quarter of its fiscal year 2022, ending on June 25), Apple's net sales were up by about 2% year over year to $83 billion.

This modest top-line growth amid the issues Apple is battling is commendable. Apple's earnings per share did decrease to $1.20, down from the $1.30 reported during the year-ago period. Rising costs and expenses, partly due to inflation, may have played a role here. Still, overall, Apple's results were pretty solid. The company owed much of this success to its signature device, the iPhone.

2. Long live the iPhone

Apple's iPhone has been its major source of revenue for over a decade now. It arguably no longer generates the buzz it once did; the tech industry used to stop everything and listen every time Apple would announce a new version of its prized device. But demand for the iPhone remains strong. During Apple's third quarter, revenue from this segment rose 2.8% to $40.7 billion.

According to CEO Tim Cook, "Looking at the data on iPhone for the June quarter, there's not obvious evidence in there that there's a macroeconomic headwind. I'm not saying that there's not one. I'm saying that the data doesn't show it where we can clearly see that in the Wearables, Home and Accessories area."

Selling more iPhones isn't just a matter of generating revenue for Apple. It also helps the company grow its installed base, provided a customer not previously part of Apple's network purchases a new device. That seems to be at least part of the story, as Apple reported that its installed base reached all-time highs across all its products during its latest quarter.

The long-run implications of these developments are significant. The more people are plugged into Apple's services network, the more it can monetize these users, and the more it can grow its services revenue. During Apple's third quarter, the tech giant's services segment grew faster than the rest of its business, recording total sales of $19.6 billion, 12.1% higher than the year-ago period.

3. Margins are making a difference for Apple

A key advantage of Apple's services segment is its higher margins. Although the services segment is still far behind in sales, Apple has made a concerted effort over the years to improve its margins, and this unit has helped these initiatives. During its third quarter, Apple's products business recorded a gross margin of 34.5%, down 1.5 percentage points compared to the year-ago period.

However, the company's services segment saw its margins improve from 69.8% to 71.5%. That helped Apple's total gross margin remain flat year over year at 43.3%. Investors should look for Apple's margins to continue improving thanks to its services unit that is growing in importance.

Buy Apple and forget

Like the rest of the world, Apple is dealing with serious issues at the moment. But the company is not breaking under the weight of its (likely temporary) challenges -- not by a long shot. The customer loyalty it has built over the years is helping it grow sales, especially those of the iPhone. Apple boasts a valuable brand name that is second to none, be it in the technology sector or elsewhere.

Apple's services business is positively impacting the company's margins in a dynamic that will continue for many years. Overall, Apple still looks like an excellent long-term bet for patient investors. time to size up how businesses are performing.

Banks, being pillars of the economy, offer good clues as to how a vast swath of companies is doing.

United Overseas Bank Ltd , or UOB, was the first bank to report its second quarter (2Q2022) and first half 2022 (1H2022) earnings.

This was followed by OCBC Ltd which announced a record net profit for 1H2022.

Finally, Singapore’s largest bank, DBS Group , weighed in with its results and outlook for the remainder of the year.

At this juncture, investors may be wondering which of the three banks makes the most attractive investment.

We put the three local lenders side by side to come up with the answer.

Financials

First off, we review the three banks’ financial statements and look for the one with the highest year on year total income and net profit growth.

OCBC ties with UOB with a near-12% year on year increase in total income, contributed mainly by higher net interest income.

However, OCBC wins hands down with a 27.7% year on year jump in net profit as higher trading income and a surge in profits from its life insurance arm aided its outsized performance.

Winner: OCBC

Loan growth and NIMs

Next, we turn our attention to the banks’ loan books and net interest margins (NIMs).

All three banks saw healthy single-digit year on year growth in their loan books, with OCBC leading the pack with an 8.7% year on year improvement.

Of the three lenders, OCBC also has the highest NIM for 2Q2022 at 1.71%, with DBS holding up the rear at 1.58%.

When compared with the same period last year, both DBS and OCBC enjoyed a 0.13 percentage point increase whereas UOB saw a smaller 0.11 percentage point rise.

On a quarter on quarter basis, OCBC also saw the biggest jump in NIM, up 0.16 percentage points compared with DBS (0.12) and UOB (0.09).

OCBC looks like the clear winner in this case, but investors should note that DBS has disclosed that July’s NIM is “above 1.8%”, portending better days for the bank as interest rates rise globally.

Winner: OCBC

Cost-to-income ratio

Moving on to the next attribute, the cost-to-income ratio measures the bank’s operating efficiency to its total income.

In comparing this metric, a lower ratio is better.

All three banks’ ratios were pretty close, but OCBC’s 43.5% wins for 2Q2022.

It was a different story in the last quarter as OCBC had the highest cost-to-income ratio of the three at 45.6%.

In addition, for 2Q2021, OCBC also reported a cost-to-income ratio of 44.3%, higher than its two peers.

Both UOB and DBS have seen little fluctuations in their cost-to-income ratio on a year on year basis for 2Q2022, while OCBC enjoyed the biggest improvement.

Winner: OCBC

Valuation

Moving along to valuation, OCBC enjoys the most attractive valuation of the three banks.

Its price-to-book (P/B) ratio of 1.08 times is the lowest, with UOB coming in a close second at a P/B of 1.17 times.

With its heft and large size, DBS commands the highest P/B of close to 1.6 times, making it the most expensive lender of the trio.

Winner: OCBC

Dividend yield

Finally, we shift our focus to each bank’s dividend yield, an attribute that income investors will pay keen attention to.

OCBC currently sports the highest trailing dividend yield of the three banks at 4.6%.

Both DBS and OCBC had upped their year on year interim dividends while UOB had kept its interim dividend constant.

Winner: OCBC

Get Smart: OCBC wins on all attributes

From the above, it’s pretty clear that OCBC wins hands down as it scored the best on all five attributes.

The bank offers a compelling valuation along with a good dividend yield and is seeing both its loan book and NIM growing steadily.

All three banks are seeing their loan books remaining resilient even as prospects of a recession loom.

Looking ahead, investors should remain watchful of risks that could result in slower loan growth or higher provisions.

","source":"lsy1602567310727","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; rates rise globally.Winner: OCBCCost-to-income ratioMoving on to the next attribute, the cost-to-income ratio measures the bank’s operating efficiency to its total income. In comparing this metric, a lower ratio is better. All three banks’ ratios were pretty close, but OCBC’s 43.5% wins for 2Q2022.It was a different story in the last quarter as OCBC had the highest cost-to-income ratio of the three at 45.6%.In addition, for 2Q2021, OCBC also reported a cost-to-income ratio of 44.3%, higher than its two peers. Both UOB and DBS have seen little fluctuations in their cost-to-income ratio on a year on year basis for 2Q2022, while OCBC enjoyed the biggest improvement.Winner: OCBCValuationMoving along to valuation, OCBC enjoys the most attractive valuation of the three banks. Its price-to-book (P/B) ratio of 1.08 times is the lowest, with UOB coming in a close second at a P/B of 1.17 times. With its heft and large size, DBS commands the highest P/B of close to 1.6 times, making it the most expensive lender of the trio.Winner: OCBCDividend yieldFinally, we shift our focus to each bank’s dividend yield, an attribute that income investors will pay keen attention to.OCBC currently sports the highest trailing dividend yield of the three banks at 4.6%.Both DBS and OCBC had upped their year on year interim dividends while UOB had kept its interim dividend constant.Winner: OCBCGet Smart: OCBC wins on all attributesFrom the above, it’s pretty clear that OCBC wins hands down as it scored the best on all five attributes. The bank offers a compelling valuation along with a good dividend yield and is seeing both its loan book and NIM growing steadily. All three banks are seeing their loan books remaining resilient even as prospects of a recession loom.Looking ahead, investors should remain watchful of risks that could result in slower loan growth or higher provisions.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":759,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9905989592,"gmtCreate":1659796043519,"gmtModify":1703766602211,"author":{"id":"4107579654972320","authorId":"4107579654972320","name":"Sharon70","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4107579654972320","authorIdStr":"4107579654972320"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Thanks remain impressive but seemed to have peaked and Services has slowed.

Headwinds from the macro environment have yet to be felt, and Apple can’t be immune from it forever.

Introduction

Apple’s performance through what many forecasted to be a challenging quarter was applaudable. With rapid Fed rate hikes, GDP contraction, and high inflation, the macro environment has been a top concern. Apple was asked about it multiple times, but stated that the iPhone was seemingly unaffected and just slowdowns in Services advertising and wearables could be attributed to macro headwinds. In fact, Apple projects accelerated revenue growth into Q4’22.

While last quarter’s results were a big relief for investors, no one is out of the woods just yet. Despite a second consecutive GDP contraction, a recession has yet to be called. Earnings have been better than feared but if you believe recessions are inevitable (as they have always been), Apple will have a lot of work to do to justify a $2.65T market cap sporting a P/E of 26.9.

Peak Margins

Mostly due to foreign exchange headwinds, Apple’s margins fell 40 basis points to 43.3%, but going into Q4 Apple projects gross margins to be in the range of 41.5 to 42.5%. There is still reason to believe that Apple’s gross margins will continue to contract over the next year and I don’t suspect that the high gross margins from Services will provide relief as the sector is slowing.

Apple is still an iPhone company

Apple’s Services growth over the last few years has helped investors feel diversified from the iPhone, which has been the most impressive product in history but is ultimately a risky one to rely on. All it takes is one competitive product to put a dent in Apple’s iPhone sales. While I don’t see one yet, it’s still a serious risk and declining growth in Services revenue is a concern when compared to the other trillion-dollar tech giants.

Apple’s Services business has grown to $19.6, a record quarter and a figure that has doubled over the past five years. However, growth slowed to 12% last quarter while Google, Microsoft, and Amazon posted cloud Services growth of 35%, 20%, and 40% respectively. Apple Services, which include Music, iCloud, TV, AppleCare, the App Store, Apple Pay and more may not be an apples-to-apples comparison to other cloud services but these divisions all serve as high-margin, high-growth businesses to maintain profits and boost margins.

For Q2’19, Apple’s Services division made up 19.74% of its total revenue (iPhone was 49.7%). Unfortunately, not much has changed as that number last quarter was 20.37% (iPhone 51.99%). Although growth in Services was enough to offset the declines in Product revenues, last quarter was a pleasant surprise from the perspective of iPhones. Unfortunately, this makes it clear that Apple is still an iPhone/hardware company. I'd like to emphasize that this is not a bad thing, but with a P/E of 26.9, it is comparable to Microsoft’s 29 P/E, which as a whole has a much higher gross margin of 68.4% and churned out 12% revenue growth for the quarter versus 2% from Apple.

Will The Next iPhone Cycle Hurt Margins?

Looking forward to Apple’s upcoming iPhone lineup, investors may find it less appealing to Apple’s bottom line.

Today, the sizes of the current flagship iPhone lineup are, in order:

iPhone 13 Mini ($699)

iPhone 13 Pro ($999)

iPhone 13 ($799)

iPhone 13 Pro Max ($1099)

In September, this will change to

iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Pro

iPhone 14 (Max?) & iPhone 14 Pro Max

On the plus side, this will streamline manufacturing from having four screen types/sizes to just two--Unless there will be a difference between the Pro iPhone displays and non Pro devices. It may also help that R&D costs by mitigating development of a lower-margin, unpopular mini iPhone. The iPhone Mini is an engineering marvel as the smallest, lightest phone of this performance and although as a user I'm sad to see it go investors will probably be relieved.

On the downside, for the first time since the introduction of the iPhone XS Max (released in 2018), consumers will be able to buy the largest available iPhone without a starting price of $1099. The Max model iPhones are very popular due to their screen size, but going forward consumers will need to justify spending more for "Pro" features, like an additional telephoto camera, LiDAR, and more. The iPhone 14 "Max" might be one of Apple's most popular devices, as it will most likely cost less than the smaller iPhone 14 Pro, and much less than the Pro Max model.

Another concern is pricing and costs. Earlier this year Apple raised the price of its iPhone SE from $399 to $429 to likely offset higher costs. I expect that the upcoming iPhone lineup will have some higher price adjustments as well. Unfortunately, unlike the past, price increases will no longer mean higher margins due to rising costs and FX. Instead margins would be flat in a strong sales environment and investors would have to hope for stable iPhone sales in what is likely to be a turbulent iPhone cycle due to the macros.

Conclusion

The last time I wrote about Apple, I suggested that it was historically a bad time to buy due to Apple’s volatile history where it has stumbled after reaching new all-time highs. Although I was briefly correct, the stock is up nearly 25% from its June lows and it is arguably much deserved after a stellar quarter. This might be a good time to consider an exit strategy and for speculators, a better entry point could be on the horizon. After all, Apple is historically a volatile stock.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple: Sell The Bounce
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple: Sell The Bounce\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-08-02 22:40 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryApple is up 25% from its June lows.Margins remain impressive but seemed to have peaked and Services has slowed.Headwinds from the macro environment have yet to be felt, and Apple can’t be ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AAPL":"苹果"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4528433-apple-stock-sell-bounce","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1101033470","content_text":"SummaryApple is up 25% from its June lows.Margins remain impressive but seemed to have peaked and Services has slowed.Headwinds from the macro environment have yet to be felt, and Apple can’t be immune from it forever.IntroductionApple’s performance through what many forecasted to be a challenging quarter was applaudable. own a stock over decades and hand it down to your children.

But this is not a fantasy.

Blue-chip stocks can provide you with the stability and assurance that they will be around for many more decades.

What’s more, these stocks can also continue growing and churning out dividends, thereby providing you with a source of passive income for life.

Having these companies in your portfolio also sets you up better for retirement as you can tap on the dividends for cash flow during your golden years.

Here are three Singapore blue-chip stocks that you can own for the rest of your life.

CapitaLand Investment Limited (SGX: 9CI)

CapitaLand Investment Limited, or CLI, is a spin-off from the old CapitaLand Limited.

In the middle of last year, CapitaLand Limited moved to privatise its development arm underTemasek Holdings while listing its investment arm under CLI.

CLI is a global real estate investment manager with S$124 billion of assets under management (AUM) and around S$86 billion of funds under management (FUM) as of 31 March 2022.

The group reported a sparkling set of earnings for fiscal 2021 (FY2021), chalking up a net profit of S$1.35 billion, a sharp reversal from the net loss of S$559 million in FY2020.

CLI also declared total final and special dividends amounting to S$0.15 per share, translating to a trailing dividend yield of 4%.

The group has been active in building up its AUM and announced the acquisition of a 22-storey office tower in Melbourne, Australia earlier this month.

This acquisition is for its regional core-plus fund, CapitaLand Open End Real Estate Fund (COREF), and total investment in COREF has hit around US$900 million since it was established close to a year ago.

Elsewhere, the real estate giant also established its first onshore RMB fund in China to advance its asset-light strategy to grow its FUM.

The fund was set up through a partnership with a domestic asset management firm and CLI holds a 12% stake in the RMB 700 million fund.

Just this week, its lodging unit Ascott Limited announced the acquisition of Oakwood Worldwide from Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd, increasing the former’s global portfolio by 81 properties and around 15,000 units.

Post-acquisition, Ascott will own more than 150,000 units in about 900 properties across 200 cities in nine countries.

Mapletree Industrial Trust (SGX: ME8U)

Moving on to the REITs space, you can count on Mapletree Industrial Trust, or MIT, to deliver steady and sustainable distributions.

The industrial REIT owns a portfolio of 143 properties valued at S$8.8 billion as of 31 March 2022.

Around 54% of MIT’s AUM is in data centres while the remainder is spread across flatted factories, Hi-Tech buildings, and business parks.

The REIT has a stellar distribution per unit (DPU) track record, displaying an unbroken increase in DPU since fiscal 2011/2012 (FY2011/2012).

DPU increased from S$0.0841 back then to S$0.138 in FY2021/2022.

MIT’s trailing distribution yield stood at 5.3%.

Not only does MIT possess a strong sponsor in Mapletree Investment Pte Ltd, but its portfolio also enjoys a high occupancy rate of 94%.

The REIT has a diversified tenant base of over 2,000 tenants where the largest tenant only contributes 6.1% of gross rental income.

Aggregate leverage stood at 38.4% with a low cost of debt of 2.4%, allowing the REIT sufficient debt headroom for more acquisitions.

OCBC Ltd (SGX: O39)

OCBC is one of Singapore’s three big banks and offers a comprehensive range of banking services to both corporations and individuals.

The lender reported a robust set of earnings for its 2022’s first quarter (1Q2022), with a net profit of S$1.36 billion, 39% higher year on year.

OCBC also recently restored its dividend to pre-pandemic levels, paying out a total of S$0.53 per share for fiscal 2021 (FY2021).

The trailing dividend yield stands at 4.7% for the bank.

The group is set to enjoy the tailwind of higher interest rates as the Federal Reserve recently announced its largest rate hike in almost 30 years.

The 0.75 percentage point increase portends more rate increases to come as the US battles four-decade-high inflation.

OCBC’s resilience and track record through different business cycles make it a strong contender for any investor’s portfolio.

","source":"lsy1602567310727","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n<meta With rapid Fed rate hikes, GDP contraction, and high inflation, the macro environment has been a top concern.

That’s worth noting as the company hasn’t seen a drop in deliveries for the last couple of years.

So what’s behind that? China is still dealing with the ongoing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. This saw lockdowns linger through the spring and early summer, causing supply chain issues that are affecting several companies. Let’s go over those below!

Is TSLA Stock Still a Buy?

JPMorgan Chase starts us off with a lowered “underweight” rating. It also cut its price target from $395 per share to $385 per share.

Next up is Oppenheimer, which continues to hold a bullish rating for the EV company’s shares even after the lower deliveries.

Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives joins the list with an “outperform” rating and $1,000 price target. Ives notes that the delivery numbers are ugly but is more focused on the second half of the year.

Bank of America analyst John Murphy maintains his “neutral” rating for TSLA stock, as well as a $925 price prediction. Tesla is among them. With that drop in deliveries, analysts are weighing in on the EV company’s stock in a series of new notes today. Let’s go over those below! Is TSLA Stock Still a Buy?JPMorgan Chase starts us off with a lowered “underweight” rating. It also cut its price target from $395 per share to $385 per share.Next up is Oppenheimer, which continues to hold a bullish rating for the EV company’s shares even after the lower deliveries.Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives joins the list with an “outperform” rating and $1,000 price target. Ives notes that the delivery numbers are ugly but is more focused on the second half of the year.Bank of America analyst John Murphy maintains his “neutral” rating for TSLA stock, as well as a $925 price prediction. Murphy says it’s unclear if Tesla will remain dominant in the EV space for the long term.Deutsche Bank analyst Emmanuel Rosner sees no problem with the latest deliveries when accounting for Covid-19 lockdowns. This saw him increase revenue and earnings per share estimates for Tesla in Q2.Even with the latest delivery trouble, analysts are still bullish on TSLA stock. While the delivery news dropped TSLA shares this morning, finally they’ve risen hasn't said its last word just yet.","content":"

Is there more fuel left in Apple's growth engine? Because the company has already delivered market-beating returns for years and is near the top of the exclusive group of trillion-dollar companies, some investors are wondering if it's time to cash in. Others still see signs that Apple isn't done growing just yet.

The Silicon Valley giant produced more evidence of its still-solid prospects when it released its latest quarterly update late last month. In it were clues that there are at least three reasons to think Apple isn't done growing yet and there is still time to get in on outsized returns. Let's take a look at those reasons.

AAPL data by YCharts

Because the company has already delivered market-beating returns for years and is near the top of the exclusive group of trillion-dollar companies, some investors are wondering if it's time to cash in. Others still see signs that Apple isn't done growing just yet.The Silicon Valley giant produced more evidence of its still-solid prospects when it released its latest quarterly update late last month. In it were clues that there are at least three reasons to think Apple isn't done growing yet and there is still time to get in on outsized returns. Let's take a look at those reasons.AAPL data by YCharts1. Despite economic headwinds, Apple is managing to do wellFears of a coming (or already present) recession are not unfounded, and inflation is eroding wage gains and savings. The company owed much of this success to its signature device, the iPhone.2. Long live the iPhoneApple's iPhone has been its major source of revenue for over a decade now. It arguably no longer generates the buzz it once did; the tech industry used to stop everything and listen every time Apple would announce a new version of its prized device. But demand for the iPhone remains strong. During Apple's third quarter, revenue from this segment rose 2.8% to $40.7 billion.According to CEO Tim Cook, \"Looking at the data on iPhone for the June quarter, there's not obvious evidence in there that there's a macroeconomic headwind. I'm not saying that there's not one. I'm saying that the data doesn't show it where we can clearly see that in the Wearables, Home and Accessories area.\"Selling more iPhones isn't just a matter of generating revenue for Apple. During Apple's third quarter, the tech giant's services segment grew faster than the rest of its business, recording total sales of $19.6 billion, 12.1% higher than the year-ago period.3. Margins are making a difference for AppleA key advantage of Apple's services segment is its higher margins. Investors should look for Apple's margins to continue improving thanks to its services unit that is growing in importance.Buy Apple and forgetLike the rest of the world, Apple is dealing with serious issues at the moment. But the company is not breaking under the weight of its (likely temporary) challenges -- not by a long shot. The customer loyalty it has built over the years is helping it grow sales, especially those of the iPhone. Apple boasts a valuable brand name that is second to none, be it in the technology sector or elsewhere.Apple's services business is positively impacting the company's margins in a dynamic that will continue for many years. Overall, Apple still looks like an excellent long-term bet for patient investors.
