That's actually pretty impressive given that these two companies hail from the stodgy consumer staples sector, known for slow and steady growth. What's interesting here perhaps isn't the dollar figures, but rather the recent trends at each of these industry heavyweights.The big-picture numbersOver the past 10 years, Procter & Gamble turned a $10,000 investment into around $18,000 based on stock price appreciation alone. Those same figures are roughly what you would see with Clorox as well.But when you take their dividends into account (via reinvestment), the ending value jumps to around $24,000 for each. That's pretty impressive and easily beats out a lot of competitors in the consumer staples sector (though there are others that have stronger performances).The really interesting thing here is that P&G was facing notable business headwinds before shifting gears in the latter part of the previous decade. Since that point, when it jettisoned a large number of small brands so it could focus on its largest labels, it has done quite well.For example, even as inflation has pressured the company's margins, it has been able to push through price increases while growing or maintaining share in its most important market and product categories. Yes, earnings have fallen off a little, but that's to be expected when inflation is raging.Overall, investors have been very well rewarded for owning Procter & Gamble. And there's no sign that's going to change. Notably, the company has now increased its dividend annually for 67 consecutive years, making it a highly elite Dividend King. The most recent hike, in April of 2022, was roughly 5%. While not earth-shattering, it was a sign of the company's boring and reliable trend of consistently rewarding investors.With an attractive portfolio of highly valuable brands, Procter & Gamble is probably a solid option for long-term investors today even though its 2.65% dividend yield isn't as high as it has been in the past.This brings up Clorox's 3.05% yield, which is a bit higher, but actually toward the high end of the company's historical range.PG data by YCharts.Getting back on trackWhereas P&G faced material headwinds early in the last decade, Clorox faces headwinds today. And that could set up an interesting buying point for long-term dividend investors, noting that Clorox increased its dividend annually for more than four decades. On some level, Clorox is facing the same inflation troubles that have tripped up P&G of late. But Clorox's current problems also stem from the unusual supply and demand dynamics created by the pandemic.Clorox's namesake product line is tied tightly with cleaning supplies, which saw a huge increase in demand in the early days of the pandemic. That resulted in very strong financial performance as the company capitalized on it by expanding its product line. It even needed to hire contract manufacturers to keep up, a costly move. But strategically, it helped the company keep retailers' shelves filled. Investors bid the stock higher as a play on the global health scare.As the world learned to live with the coronavirus, and that demand subsided, sales of cleaning products fell and investors jumped ship. Then inflation hit, further crimping the company's margins.The pessimism surrounding the stock, really just the other side of the unbridled optimism in 2020, has been a huge headwind. But, like P&G in the past, Clorox is working hard to get things back in order. For example, it got rid of the high-cost contract manufacturing it needed during the pandemic, among other cost-cutting moves. It has also been aggressively increasing prices to offset inflation.But what's really interesting is that management believes the fiscal second quarter of 2023 was a turning point for margins. That suggests that things will get brighter in the quarter ahead, which might lead investors to place a higher valuation on the shares. If you are looking for a stock that's on sale today, Clorox could be worth a closer look.Same place, different storiesWith a $330 billion market cap, P&G is an industry giant. The recent episode in which it slimmed down its portfolio and improved results is a testament to its long-term strength and a reason conservative dividend investors might want to own it -- even if the stock is fully valued.Clorox, with a market cap of $19 billion, is tiny by comparison. However, it looks like it is on sale and, like P&G not too long ago, is taking action to fix a struggling business. Indeed, we could be headed into a recession, interest rates remain stubbornly high (compressing valuations), and there are plenty of geopolitical concerns brewing, so trying to stay safer makes sense.But stocks that grow their businesses make good investments and over the past two decades, companies that have delivered explosive growth have seen impressive increases in their stock prices, and I'm looking for that kind of growth. These three stocks are among the top options I'm considering now.AlibabaChinese e-commerce company Alibaba has seen some impressive price action thus far this year. The stock closed last year under $90 per share and shot above $120 per share in January before giving up essentially all of its gains. It's trading flat for the year at this point and is down about 11% over the past 12 months.Investors are disappointed in Alibaba's top line. The company recently published fiscal third-quarter results that showed only 2% revenue growth in the quarter ending Dec. 31. For a company that in recent years had been providing consistent 30%+ annualized growth, this is the sort of pace many hyper-growth investors don't want to see.That said, on Alibaba's bottom line, earnings growth of 14% was enough to perk up investor interest when the company reported before the market opened on Feb. 23. The stock, however, then declined as investors appeared to be brushing off the company's earnings growth potential given the current geopolitical situation as well as the unique risks tied to Chinese equities.I think Alibaba's price action this year reflects the eagerness of investors to take a bullish position in a dominant e-commerce player in the world's largest consumer market. And it also reflects the downside risks associated with a government that appears to remain steadfast in its view that large tech companies need to have any monopolistic power (real or perceived) curtailed. That said, over the long run, I believe this is a company that can see significant bottom-line growth, particularly as the Chinese economy reopens and China will likely outperform other major global economies on a relative basis in terms of growth.Meta PlatformsThere is no doubt that 2022 was a challenging and unsatisfying year for Meta Platforms. As with Alibaba, the growth slowdown seen at Meta may preclude this stock from most investors' list of growth stocks to watch. However, I think there's more to the story than the company's current situation.For the fourth quarter and full 2022, Meta saw revenue decline 4% and 1%, respectively. Those aren't the kind of results many would have expected would lead to a surge in stock price following the report.However, Meta stock spiked the day after the report and is currently up about 20% from its price prior to its earnings release due to investor enthusiasm about announced cost cuts and a massive share buyback program announced this past quarter. The company increased its share buyback authorization by $40 billion, and has billions in cost cuts tied to layoffs and facility consolidation, moves that investors appear to appreciate. While the company appears to still be aiming its focus on the future, investing in the metaverse and other non-social-media businesses, these sorts of efficiency measures could boost profitability growth.Right now, it's profitability growth investors most care about. And at 20 times earnings, Meta stock hasn't been this cheap in a very long time. Indeed, we could be headed into a recession, interest rates remain stubbornly high (compressing valuations), and there are plenty of geopolitical concerns brewing, so trying to stay safer makes sense.But stocks that grow their businesses make good investments and over the past two decades, companies that have delivered explosive growth have seen impressive increases in their stock prices, and I'm looking for that kind of growth. These three stocks are among the top options I'm considering now.AlibabaChinese e-commerce company Alibaba has seen some impressive price action thus far this year. The stock closed last year under $90 per share and shot above $120 per share in January before giving up essentially all of its gains. It's trading flat for the year at this point and is down about 11% over the past 12 months.Investors are disappointed in Alibaba's top line. The company recently published fiscal third-quarter results that showed only 2% revenue growth in the quarter ending Dec. 31. For a company that in recent years had been providing consistent 30%+ annualized growth, this is the sort of pace many hyper-growth investors don't want to see.That said, on Alibaba's bottom line, earnings growth of 14% was enough to perk up investor interest when the company reported before the market opened on Feb. 23. The stock, however, then declined as investors appeared to be brushing off the company's earnings growth potential given the current geopolitical situation as well as the unique risks tied to Chinese equities.I think Alibaba's price action this year reflects the eagerness of investors to take a bullish position in a dominant e-commerce player in the world's largest consumer market. And it also reflects the downside risks associated with a government that appears to remain steadfast in its view that large tech companies need to have any monopolistic power (real or perceived) curtailed. That said, over the long run, I believe this is a company that can see significant bottom-line growth, particularly as the Chinese economy reopens and China will likely outperform other major global economies on a relative basis in terms of growth.Meta PlatformsThere is no doubt that 2022 was a challenging and unsatisfying year for Meta Platforms. As with Alibaba, the growth slowdown seen at Meta may preclude this stock from most investors' list of growth stocks to watch. However, I think there's more to the story than the company's current situation.For the fourth quarter and full 2022, Meta saw revenue decline 4% and 1%, respectively. Those aren't the kind of results many would have expected would lead to a surge in stock price following the report.However, Meta stock spiked the day after the report and is currently up about 20% from its price prior to its earnings release due to investor enthusiasm about announced cost cuts and a massive share buyback program announced this past quarter. The company increased its share buyback authorization by $40 billion, and has billions in cost cuts tied to layoffs and facility consolidation, moves that investors appear to appreciate. While the company appears to still be aiming its focus on the future, investing in the metaverse and other non-social-media businesses, these sorts of efficiency measures could boost profitability growth.Right now, it's profitability growth investors most care about. And at 20 times earnings, Meta stock hasn't been this cheap in a very long time. Thus, if the company is able to return to its roots and focus on growing the profitability of its core business (while streamlining its operations further), explosive growth is certainly a viable outcome.PinterestAnother volatile stock that's worth at least putting on your watch list right now is Pinterest. During the pandemic, Pinterest experienced a surge in user growth. However, like the other names on this list, recent quarters have not been so kind to Pinterest, which has once again become unprofitable as the overall ad market appears to be weakening.That said, I think Pinterest's long-term outlook remains robust. As far as social media platforms are concerned, Pinterest has among the most monetizable models out there. Of course, the degree to which the company is able to monetize it rests in the hands of its management team.Looking at the company's numbers, there's not a lot to like, but as the company continues to roll out sponsored posts and shoppable pins that let people buy from the post, I think Pinterest's numbers will improve. One report shows 86% of digital buyers in the U.S. reported difficulty getting from a social media site to a brand site and that's something Pinterest is trying to address, and it could pay off.If the company's numbers don't improve, my thesis may change. But for now, this is a stock I'm holding on to.I like these stocksWhile there's plenty of execution and time-related risk to consider with these stocks -- each has its own unique future catalysts and investors might want to wait and see how growth materializes -- these are three companies I continue to hold.
