Since hitting a record-closing high during the first week of January, the widely followed S&P 500 has lost as much as 24% of its value and tumbled into bear market territory.But it's been an even tougher go for growth-dependent stock indexes, such as the Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100. The latter is comprised of the 100 largest nonfinancial stocks listed on the Nasdaq exchange. Since hitting their all-time highs, both the Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 have shed close to a third of their value at their peak.But there's another side to this story. While bear market declines can be scary, they're also the ideal time for long-term investors to do some shopping. This is especially true for growth stocks, which have taken it on the chin during the 2022 swoon in equities. The Nasdaq 100 is currently housing three bargain growth stocks that can confidently be bought hand over fist in August.AmazonThe first Nasdaq 100 stock that proved, once again, it belongs in investors' portfolios and can be bought hand over fist in August is e-commerce stock Amazon (AMZN).In each of the past two quarters, U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) retraced. This comes atop persistent supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as historically high inflation, which hit a four-decade high of 9.1% in June. In other words, Wall Street and investors fully expected Amazon to face-plant when it reported its second-quarter operating results. While there were a number of one-time charges that weighed on the company's bottom line, the fact remains that its high-margin operating segments and long-term growth trajectory remain unfazed by near-term economic weakness.The interesting thing about Amazon is that its most well-known operating segment may prove to be its least important over the long run. On the one hand, Amazon's online marketplace is expected to account for 39.5% of U.S. online retail sales in 2022. That's more than its next-closest 14 competitors added together. On the other hand, retail is a low-margin segment.What's far more important for Amazon is how its marketplace has helped funnel business into its higher-margin segments. For instance, the company's leading marketplace helped it sign up more than 200 million Prime members. The tens of billions of dollars collected in annual Prime fees allow Amazon to invest in its rapidly growing logistics network and redirect capital to high-margin initiatives.Arguably the highest-margin initiative for the company is Amazon Web Services (AWS). According to a report from Canalys, AWS accounted for 33% of global cloud infrastructure spending in the first quarter. AWS managed 33% year-over-year sales growth in the challenged second quarter and has consistently provided the lion's share of Amazon's operating income despite accounting for around 15% to 16% of net sales.The final reason to pile into Amazon is its valuation. After more than a decade of investors willingly paying 20 or more times year-end cash flow, investors can buy Amazon right now for a little over nine times Wall Street's forecast cash flow in 2025.PayPal HoldingsThe second Nasdaq 100 stock that's begging to be bought in August is fintech giant PayPal Holdings (PYPL). PayPal is the parent of popular peer-to-peer payment app Venmo.The prevailing concern for digital payment companies over the past couple of quarters is that inflation would adversely impact their operating performance. Rising prices disproportionately impact lower-earning deciles, which has the potential to result in reduced usage on digital payment platforms. Although PayPal has, indeed, sounded a cautious tone over the short run, the theme of this list is that its long-term growth strategy remains well intact.For instance, PayPal managed to deliver 15% constant-currency growth in total payment volume on its platform during Q1 (note, this write-up was done prior to PayPal reporting Q2 results on Aug. 2, 2022). Not only does this demonstrate that consumer spending is stronger than some folks realize, but it suggests that digital payments are still in their infancy and capable of sustained, double-digit growth for a long time to come.What's more, engagement across PayPal's digital platforms has been steadily climbing. At the end of 2020, active users were completing an average of 40.9 transactions over the trailing-12-month period. But as of the end of Q1 2022, the average active user was undertaking 47 transactions over the trailing-12-month period.  If this figure keeps rising, it suggests PayPal should have no trouble extracting increasingly larger profits out of its growing active users.PayPal also expects to be a sizable player in the buy now, pay later (BNPL) space. While most BNPL businesses are likely to see delinquencies rise as the U.S. and global economy worsens in the coming quarters, the future for financed digital purchases appears bright. It's why PayPal ponied up $2.7 billion to acquire BNPL provider Paidy in Japan in 2021.Over the past five years, PayPal has averaged a forward-year price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 38.1. Investors can scoop up shares right now for less than half that amount (18.3 times forward-year earnings).AlphabetThe third Nasdaq 100 stock to buy hand over fist in August is none other than FAANG stock Alphabet (GOOGL) (GOOG). Alphabet is the parent company of widely used internet search engine Google and streaming platform YouTube.Any skepticism toward Alphabet effectively echoes what's already been said about Amazon and PayPal. Its adjusted operating margin jumped 640 basis points to 47.2%. It attributed most of that growth to its robust sales of gaming and data center GPUs.But over the next three fiscal years, analysts expect Nvidia's revenue growth to decelerate as that upgrade cycle cools off. Therefore, I think Nvidia's market cap might stay between $500 billion and $700 billion over the next three years as it grapples with a cyclical slowdown in the GPU market.The near-term headwindsInvestors should take analysts' estimates with a grain of salt, but Nvidia stock likely needs to take a breather after its big growth spurt over the past few years.In HP's (NYSE: HPQ) latest earnings report, it said its sales of consumer PCs fell 1% year-over-year as it faced tough comparisons to the boost it got from remote work and gaming upgrades during the pandemic. That slowdown doesn't bode well for Nvidia and other PC chipmakers.Meanwhile, data center operators might buy fewer Nvidia GPUs for AI tasks as the usage of cloud-based services decelerates in a post-lockdown market. Waning interest in cryptocurrencies, many of which have lost value this year as investors have rotated out of riskier assets, will also curb sales of its gaming GPUs and dedicated mining chips.To make matters worse, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) plans to disrupt Nvidia and AMD's (NASDAQ: AMD) duopoly in discrete GPUs with its own chips. These new GPUs, which Intel is bundling with its own CPUs, could cause more headaches for Nvidia and AMD as the broader gaming market slows down.The long-term tailwindsThose challenges seem daunting, but Nvidia has weathered plenty of cyclical downturns and competitive threats since its public debut in 1999. It also remains the dominant discrete GPU maker with an 81% market share, according to JPR's fourth-quarter numbers, compared to AMD's 19% share.The gaming and data center markets should also keep expanding over the next few years. The gaming PC market could expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.9% between 2021 and 2027, according to Report Ocean, while Research and Markets expects the data center accelerator market to grow at a CAGR of 36.7% between 2021 and 2026.If Nvidia continues to dominate both of those growing markets, its cyclical slowdown could end a lot sooner than expected. Its oft-overlooked automotive chip business -- which generated just 2% of revenue in its latest quarter -- could also gain more traction as the automotive sector gradually recovers and develops new connected and autonomous vehicles.Look beyond Nvidia's market capNvidia probably won't become a trillion-dollar company by 2025, and investors who were spoiled by its 380% rally over the past three years might be a bit disappointed. However, it's arguably better for Nvidia's stock to cool off now and reset the market's expectations instead of flying off the rails with runaway valuations.Nvidia's stock might generate much lower returns over the next three years, but investors shouldn't abandon the chipmaker yet. But many investors say there is no better place to be right now.</p>\n<p>Major U.S. stock indexes sank Monday, with theDow Jones Industrial Average losing more than 600 points, or 1.8%, asconcerns grew that a defaultby real-estate developer China Evergrande Group could spur a widespread retreat from riskier assets. Percolating worries about a slowdown in economic growth, ongoing supply-chain issues andrising deathstied to the Delta variant of the coronavirus added to the volatility.</p>\n<p>For months, investors have been bracing for apullback such as this, warning in some cases that the U.S. stock market had run up too far, too fast. But now, with the Dow down 3.9% month-to-date, some traders say they aren’t concerned.</p>\n<p>“The short-term noise we’re dealing with does not change the fact that we think the economy is on solid footing and that equities still look attractive relative to other assets,” said Keith Lerner, co-chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services. “We still think the primary market trend over the next 12 months is higher.”</p>\n<p>That outlook matches the so-called TINA mantra that has carried the market higher for much of the past year, with many investors believing “there is no alternative” to stocks. With yields on other assets such as bonds hovering at such low levels, many investors have been willing to keep buying equities at record-high prices. Even amid the continuing pullback, some investors have said they are only tweaking their stock allocations and strategies rather than ditching equities in favor of other asset classes across the market.</p>\n<p>Evidence of that mind-set has been apparent in recent stock positioning data, which suggest that investors expect further gains ahead. Last week, for example, data from fund-flow tracker EPFR showed that investors poured the largest amount of money into U.S. stock-focused mutual and exchange-traded funds since March. Their buying spree totaled a net $45.7 billion in the week ended Sept. 15—more than the previous five weeks combined.</p>\n<p>Similar sentiment has been visible in U.S. equity futures, where institutional investors’ bullish positioning continues to hover near all-time highs, according to an RBC Capital Markets analysis of data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. “At current levels,” RBC analysts wrote in a recent note, “this indicator is signaling that investor positioning remains quite euphoric.”</p>\n<p>Optimistic positioningin U.S. stocks has been evident for months, helping the S&amp;P 500 charge to 54 records this year. But in a striking contrast from much of 2021, current positioning hasn’t been matched by sentiment surveys. Last week, for example, a survey from the American Association of Individual Investors showed that bullish sentiment among traders plunged to its lowest level since July of 2020. About 22% of individual investors reported that they expect stocks to rise over the next six months—down from a 2021 high of nearly 57% in April.</p>\n<p>Similar pessimism was recently captured in a survey by IHS Markit of 100 institutional investors employed by firms whose assets under management collectively total about $845 billion. That survey, conducted in September, found sinking risk appetite among the group, with more investors expecting returns to fall, rather than rise, over the next 30 days.</p>\n<p>The disconnect between sentiment surveys and positioning data underscores a strange year in financial markets and the “complete divergence in terms of what’s in people’s heads and what they are actually doing,” said Lori Calvasina, head of U.S. equity strategy at RBC.</p>\n<p>“I think we’ve seen high levels of nervousness emerge, but we haven’t seen high levels of fear emerge,” Ms. Calvasina continued. “Fear is what causes the positioning to come down. Nervousness causes them to move things around.”</p>\n<p>For now, some investors say they have been using the continuing weakness to reallocate money into other sectors or strategize about plays later in the year. Mr. Lerner of Truist, for example, said that small-cap stocks are on his radar for the fourth quarter, in part because of the recent weakness of the group. “The setup is improving based on negative sentiment, attractive valuations and strong earnings trends,” he said.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, recent data from a Bank of America Global Research survey showed that the average cash balance among fund managers now sits at 4.3%, only a slight increase from the 4.2% recorded the month before. Growth is continuing, but with full-year expectations for about 865,000 deliveries for 2021, investors likely expected stronger growth.</p>\n<p>Tesla needs to deliver roughly 475,000 vehicles in the second half to hit Wall Street expectations. Tesla produced more than 206,000 vehicles in the second quarter, up from about 180,000 in the first quarter.</p>\n<p>Tesla doesn’t have formal guidance for full-year 2021 deliveries. Tesla expects to grow faster than 50% in 2021. The company delivered about 500,000 vehicles in 2020.</p>\n<p>The number doesn’t look like a big enough surprise to shake up Tesla stock, which has had an interesting year. Shares are down about 5% in the first quarter of the year, closing at roughly $668 a share. Shares traded above $900 in January. Shares gained about 2% in the second quarter, closing at about $680.</p>\n<p>Coming into Friday, shares are down a little year to date, trailing behind comparable gains of the overall market as well as many other automotive stocks that have benefited from the global economic recovery which is boosting auto sales.</p>\n<p>Many things impacted Tesla stock including&nbsp;rising interest rates—which hurts high growth stocks such as Tesla more than slow growth stocks such as traditional auto makers—and a&nbsp;semiconductor shortage&nbsp;that constrained auto production around the globe. It took a while for investors to adjust to those factors, as well as others, and for Tesla stock to bounce off recent lows.</p>\n<p>Chinese EV makers&nbsp;NIO(NIO) and&nbsp;XPeng(XPEV) also reported&nbsp;strong June deliveries. NIO stock opened higher Thursday and closed down 4.3%. XPeng shares opened higher as well and closed down 1.7%. Both stocks had a strong run in June. Investors appear to have sold on news.</p>\n<p>It looks like they may do the same with Tesla.</p>\n<p>Bullish investors have been&nbsp;waiting for a new catalyst&nbsp;to drive the stock out of its recent range. Second quarter deliveries could have been the catalyst, but they will probably be seen by the Street, and investors, as good and not great.</p>\n<p>Looking ahead, investors have new production coming from Texas and Germany to look forward to. That should happen close to the end of 2021. Tesla is also expected to offer its higher level of driver assistance software, dubbed&nbsp;Full Self Driving, on a subscription basis soon. The uptake of that product will be another thing closely watched by investors.</p>\n<p>Another potential catalyst for investors will be second quarter earnings which should be reported in late July. Wall Street projects about 95 cents in per share earnings from $11.3 billion in sales. Tesla earned 93 cents a share in the first quarter of 2021. They don’t look good enough to lift the stock materially, however.\nThe line in the sand for Tesla (ticker: TSLA) investors was about 200,000 deliveries. More than that should have been good for the stock. Less would have been bad. That means the second-quarter number qualifies as a minor “beat” versus investor expectations.\nTesla shares were down 0.3% at $675.68 in premarket trading.S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 0.2%. Shares higher, however in early trading Friday, up about 1.7%. The S&P 500 is 0.3% higher.\nStill, the second-quarter number is another quarterly record. Tesla delivered about 185,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2021, compared with 181,000 in the fourth quarter of 2020 and about 88,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2020. Growth is continuing, but with full-year expectations for about 865,000 deliveries for 2021, investors likely expected stronger growth.\nTesla needs to deliver roughly 475,000 vehicles in the second half to hit Wall Street expectations. Tesla produced more than 206,000 vehicles in the second quarter, up from about 180,000 in the first quarter.\nTesla doesn’t have formal guidance for full-year 2021 deliveries. Tesla expects to grow faster than 50% in 2021. The company delivered about 500,000 vehicles in 2020.\nThe number doesn’t look like a big enough surprise to shake up Tesla stock, which has had an interesting year. Shares are down about 5% in the first quarter of the year, closing at roughly $668 a share. Shares traded above $900 in January. Shares gained about 2% in the second quarter, closing at about $680.\nComing into Friday, shares are down a little year to date, trailing behind comparable gains of the overall market as well as many other automotive stocks that have benefited from the global economic recovery which is boosting auto sales.\nMany things impacted Tesla stock including rising interest rates—which hurts high growth stocks such as Tesla more than slow growth stocks such as traditional auto makers—and a semiconductor shortage that constrained auto production around the globe. It took a while for investors to adjust to those factors, as well as others, and for Tesla stock to bounce off recent lows.\nChinese EV makers NIO(NIO) and XPeng(XPEV) also reported strong June deliveries. NIO stock opened higher Thursday and closed down 4.3%. XPeng shares opened higher as well and closed down 1.7%. Both stocks had a strong run in June. Investors appear to have sold on news.\nIt looks like they may do the same with Tesla.\nBullish investors have been waiting for a new catalyst to drive the stock out of its recent range. Second quarter deliveries could have been the catalyst, but they will probably be seen by the Street, and investors, as good and not great.\nLooking ahead, investors have new production coming from Texas and Germany to look forward to. That should happen close to the end of 2021. Tesla is also expected to offer its higher level of driver assistance software, dubbed Full Self Driving, on a subscription basis soon. The uptake of that product will be another thing closely watched by investors.\nAnother potential catalyst for investors will be second quarter earnings which should be reported in late July. Wall Street projects about 95 cents in per share earnings from $11.3 billion in sales. Tesla earned 93 cents a share in the first quarter of 2021.
