Now though, the gains are fading almost as quickly as they happened. In its <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QTWO\">Q2</a> earnings release, Pfizer reported 93% year-over-year revenue growth. Yet shares are up less than 20% over the past 12 months. Why have investors not given Pfizer credit for its performance, and will that change in the future?</p>\n<p><b>Vaccine Hits A Setback</b></p>\n<p>Pfizer has enjoyed incredible revenue growth over the past year due to its Covid-19 vaccine. The majority of vaccinated <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AFG\">American</a> adults have taken the Pfizer vaccine, and it’s had strong sales overseas as well.</p>\n<p>Despite that, however, PFE stock didn’t move too much. At least, not until July of this year. At that time, PFE stock finally took off. The reason why is that investors started to price in the expectation that people would need to take vaccine booster shots to maintain efficacy.</p>\n<p>The idea of a third, and potentially even fourth or more dose of vaccines would have created a far more enduring revenue boost for Pfizer. Up until recently, investors had shied away from Pfizer despite its massive top-line growth because they anticipated that the Covid business would quickly recede. With booster shots, however, the vaccine would have taken on another level of importance to the company.</p>\n<p>This scenario is now under increasing doubt, however. A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel recentlyrecommended againstadvising booster shots of the Pfizer vaccine. A large majority of the panelists voted that the data on hand was insufficient to warrant booster shots. That comes amid reports that&nbsp;<b>Moderna’s</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>MRNA</u></b>) vaccine remains effective in a higher percentage of people than Pfizer’s after 120 days.</p>\n<p>This is hardly the final word on booster shots or the efficacy of Moderna versus Pfizer. Pfizer’s investors shouldn’t discount the possibility that the FDA later comes around on additional rounds of the vaccine. For now, however, the prospects are looking more uncertain.</p>\n<p><b>Baseline Valuation Is Not That Demanding</b></p>\n<p>Let’s go back in time to 2019 and pretend that we’ve never heard of the pandemic. What does an investment in Pfizer look like in this hypothetical scenario? For full-year 2018, Pfizer generated $1.87 of EPS. In 2019, this leapt to $2.87.</p>\n<p>Based on today’s stock price just below $44, PFE stock is selling at 23x 2018 earnings or 15x 2019 earnings. With no benefit from the current Covid-19 vaccine whatsoever, Pfizer stock would still be going for a reasonable multiple.</p>\n<p>Yes, you can argue that pharmaceutical companies should trade for lower P/E multiples than many other industries given the high cost of drug development and quick patent expiries. Still, with earnings as strong as they were in 2018-19, it’s not hard to get behind the stock at $44 even if you give the company zero credit for the Covid-19 vaccine. Forget about booster shots for a minute, traders are pricing Pfizer like there will be little more revenue from the vaccine whatsoever.</p>\n<p><b>PFE Stock Verdict</b></p>\n<p>Right now, Pfizer stock is inextricably linked to its vaccine’s outlook. When there is positive news on that front, PFE stock surges. When there is a setback, PFE stock sells off hard. That’s a totally understandable market reaction. Many traders are trained to react quickly to the latest headline.</p>\n<p>For longer-term investors, however, Pfizer is an opportunity regardless of the trajectory of the vaccine. Even if boosters ultimately aren’t a big thing, Pfizer can still make investors money from this entry point.</p>\n<p>The company is a tremendous diversified pharmaceutical giant. It was in good shape long before the pandemic, and it has dozens of promising drugs in its pipeline to power it for the next decade and beyond. The company is reaping a windfall right now, but it’s not like that’s its only iron in the fire.</p>\n<p>If the Covid-19 business continues longer than forecast, that’s all upside to the stock price. But many investors say there is no better place to be right now.</p>\n<p>Major U.S. stock indexes sank Monday, with theDow Jones Industrial Average losing more than 600 points, or 1.8%, asconcerns grew that a defaultby real-estate developer China Evergrande Group could spur a widespread retreat from riskier assets. Percolating worries about a slowdown in economic growth, ongoing supply-chain issues andrising deathstied to the Delta variant of the coronavirus added to the volatility.</p>\n<p>For months, investors have been bracing for apullback such as this, warning in some cases that the U.S. stock market had run up too far, too fast. But now, with the Dow down 3.9% month-to-date, some traders say they aren’t concerned.</p>\n<p>“The short-term noise we’re dealing with does not change the fact that we think the economy is on solid footing and that equities still look attractive relative to other assets,” said Keith Lerner, co-chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services. “We still think the primary market trend over the next 12 months is higher.”</p>\n<p>That outlook matches the so-called TINA mantra that has carried the market higher for much of the past year, with many investors believing “there is no alternative” to stocks. With yields on other assets such as bonds hovering at such low levels, many investors have been willing to keep buying equities at record-high prices. Even amid the continuing pullback, some investors have said they are only tweaking their stock allocations and strategies rather than ditching equities in favor of other asset classes across the market.</p>\n<p>Evidence of that mind-set has been apparent in recent stock positioning data, which suggest that investors expect further gains ahead. Last week, for example, data from fund-flow tracker EPFR showed that investors poured the largest amount of money into U.S. stock-focused mutual and exchange-traded funds since March. Their buying spree totaled a net $45.7 billion in the week ended Sept. 15—more than the previous five weeks combined.</p>\n<p>Similar sentiment has been visible in U.S. equity futures, where institutional investors’ bullish positioning continues to hover near all-time highs, according to an RBC Capital Markets analysis of data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. “At current levels,” RBC analysts wrote in a recent note, “this indicator is signaling that investor positioning remains quite euphoric.”</p>\n<p>Optimistic positioningin U.S. stocks has been evident for months, helping the S&amp;P 500 charge to 54 records this year. But in a striking contrast from much of 2021, current positioning hasn’t been matched by sentiment surveys. Last week, for example, a survey from the American Association of Individual Investors showed that bullish sentiment among traders plunged to its lowest level since July of 2020. About 22% of individual investors reported that they expect stocks to rise over the next six months—down from a 2021 high of nearly 57% in April.</p>\n<p>Similar pessimism was recently captured in a survey by IHS Markit of 100 institutional investors employed by firms whose assets under management collectively total about $845 billion. That survey, conducted in September, found sinking risk appetite among the group, with more investors expecting returns to fall, rather than rise, over the next 30 days.</p>\n<p>The disconnect between sentiment surveys and positioning data underscores a strange year in financial markets and the “complete divergence in terms of what’s in people’s heads and what they are actually doing,” said Lori Calvasina, head of U.S. equity strategy at RBC.</p>\n<p>“I think we’ve seen high levels of nervousness emerge, but we haven’t seen high levels of fear emerge,” Ms. Calvasina continued. “Fear is what causes the positioning to come down. Nervousness causes them to move things around.”</p>\n<p>For now, some investors say they have been using the continuing weakness to reallocate money into other sectors or strategize about plays later in the year. Mr. Lerner of Truist, for example, said that small-cap stocks are on his radar for the fourth quarter, in part because of the recent weakness of the group. “The setup is improving based on negative sentiment, attractive valuations and strong earnings trends,” he said.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, recent data from a Bank of America Global Research survey showed that the average cash balance among fund managers now sits at 4.3%, only a slight increase from the 4.2% recorded the month before. Meanwhile, a net 50% of fund managers are overweight global equities.</p>\n<p>“One of the things that we’ve been talking about is this allocation toward equities, which seems like a very bullish outlook,” said David A. Jones, director of global investment strategy at BofA Securities. “But really, our feeling is that it’s a result of people having nowhere else to invest. Abbott Laboratories</h2>\n<p>Abbott Laboratories is a robust healthcare business that makes for an ideal set-and-forget investment. While COVID-19 testing has given its top line some added growth, the company is diverse. That's <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the big reasons you can safely hang on to the stock for years or even decades.</p>\n<p>When Abbott last reported earnings on July 22, its sales for the period ending June 30 topped $10.2 billion, up by nearly 40% year over year. Much of that growth did come from its diagnostics segment, where sales of $3.3 billion increased by an impressive 63%. However, medical device revenue was higher at $3.7 billion, up more than 51%. The company gives investors the best of both worlds -- its stock can benefit both from an uptick in COVID-19 testing and from a post-pandemic return to normal (as indicated by an increase in medical device sales).</p>\n<p>Historically, Abbott has generated solid gross margins of at least 55% in each of the past five years. A strong margin is important to ensure that as the business grows, so too will its bottom line. In 2020, the company's operating profit of $5.4 billion was more than triple the $1.7 billion it earned just three years earlier.</p>\n<p>Another reason Abbott is a good buy-and-forget stock is its dividend. Today, it yields 1.4%, which isn't much higher than the&nbsp;<b>S&amp;P 500&nbsp;</b>average of 1.3%. However, with the company just one more dividend increase away from becoming a Dividend King, it's safe to assume that you'll likely collect more on your initial investment over time. Whether you like recurring income or long-term growth (or both!), odds are you'll love Abbott Laboratories stock.</p>\n<h2>2. Palantir</h2>\n<p>Tech company Palantir is another business that has the makings of a solid long-term investment. Not only is it growing at an impressive rate, but the company also has many government customers that rely on its software platform for help with counterterrorism operations, anchoring its financials. One of the company's opportunities for long-term growth is in expanding its commercial customers. Palantir has been doing this, though government-related revenue still makes up more than 60% of its top line.</p>\n<p>In its second-quarter results (for the period ending June 30), Palantir reported revenue of $376 million, up 49% from the prior-year period. Particularly impressive was its U.S. commercial revenue, which grew at a rate of 90%. And the number of commercial customers was up 61% from the start of the year. Palantir maintains that its revenue will grow at an annual rate of at least 30% though 2025.</p>\n<p>Although the company has continually reported net losses since going public a year ago, its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q2 totaled $121 million, making up 32% of revenue. And over the trailing 12 months, Palantir has reported positive free cash flow of $62 million.</p>\n<p>With more growth on the horizon and the company already being cash flow positive, this is another promising stock that all growth investors should consider buying shares of.</p>\n<h2>3. Walmart</h2>\n<p>Big-box retail chain Walmart is a business you know isn't going anywhere. Like Abbott, it also pays a modest dividend (1.5%), and it is two years away from becoming a Dividend King. For investors who love a boring stock that they can count on for recurring revenue, Walmart's an easy pick.</p>\n<p>But that's not to say sales won't continue to grow. The business has been expanding into healthcare,&nbsp;and the launch of subscription service Walmart+ last year suggests that it is willing to take on e-commerce giant&nbsp;<b>Amazon</b> head-on for growth opportunities online.</p>\n<p>A company the size of Walmart, which generated nearly $26 billion in free cash flow in its most recent fiscal year, can afford to spend money on multiple growth initiatives. While its gross margin of 25% isn't great, Walmart can still do well and turn a profit because of its sheer size; a small 2% net margin on $559 billion in revenue for fiscal 2021 still resulted in more than $13 billion in net income.</p>\n<p>And while the surge in e-commerce sales may be slowing down from a year ago when consumers were stuck at home, the retailer still reported that U.S. e-commerce sales grew 6% year over year in its latest quarter, for the period ending July 31. Abbott Laboratories\nAbbott Laboratories is a robust healthcare business that makes for an ideal set-and-forget investment. While COVID-19 testing has given its top line some added growth, the company is diverse. That's one of the big reasons you can safely hang on to the stock for years or even decades.\nWhen Abbott last reported earnings on July 22, its sales for the period ending June 30 topped $10.2 billion, up by nearly 40% year over year. Much of that growth did come from its diagnostics segment, where sales of $3.3 billion increased by an impressive 63%. However, medical device revenue was higher at $3.7 billion, up more than 51%. The company gives investors the best of both worlds -- its stock can benefit both from an uptick in COVID-19 testing and from a post-pandemic return to normal (as indicated by an increase in medical device sales).\nHistorically, Abbott has generated solid gross margins of at least 55% in each of the past five years. A strong margin is important to ensure that as the business grows, so too will its bottom line. In 2020, the company's operating profit of $5.4 billion was more than triple the $1.7 billion it earned just three years earlier.\nAnother reason Abbott is a good buy-and-forget stock is its dividend. Today, it yields 1.4%, which isn't much higher than the S&P 500 average of 1.3%. However, with the company just one more dividend increase away from becoming a Dividend King, it's safe to assume that you'll likely collect more on your initial investment over time. Whether you like recurring income or long-term growth (or both!), odds are you'll love Abbott Laboratories stock.\n2. Palantir\nTech company Palantir is another business that has the makings of a solid long-term investment. Not only is it growing at an impressive rate, but the company also has many government customers that rely on its software platform for help with counterterrorism operations, anchoring its financials. One of the company's opportunities for long-term growth is in expanding its commercial customers. Palantir has been doing this, though government-related revenue still makes up more than 60% of its top line.\nIn its second-quarter results (for the period ending June 30), Palantir reported revenue of $376 million, up 49% from the prior-year period. Particularly impressive was its U.S. commercial revenue, which grew at a rate of 90%. And the number of commercial customers was up 61% from the start of the year. Palantir maintains that its revenue will grow at an annual rate of at least 30% though 2025.\nAlthough the company has continually reported net losses since going public a year ago, its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q2 totaled $121 million, making up 32% of revenue. And over the trailing 12 months, Palantir has reported positive free cash flow of $62 million.\nWith more growth on the horizon and the company already being cash flow positive, this is another promising stock that all growth investors should consider buying shares of.\n3. Walmart\nBig-box retail chain Walmart is a business you know isn't going anywhere. Like Abbott, it also pays a modest dividend (1.5%), and it is two years away from becoming a Dividend King. For investors who love a boring stock that they can count on for recurring revenue, Walmart's an easy pick.\nBut that's not to say sales won't continue to grow. The business has been expanding into healthcare, and the launch of subscription service Walmart+ last year suggests that it is willing to take on e-commerce giant Amazon head-on for growth opportunities online.\nA company the size of Walmart, which generated nearly $26 billion in free cash flow in its most recent fiscal year, can afford to spend money on multiple growth initiatives. While its gross margin of 25% isn't great, Walmart can still do well and turn a profit because of its sheer size; a small 2% net margin on $559 billion in revenue for fiscal 2021 still resulted in more than $13 billion in net income.\nAnd while the surge in e-commerce sales may be slowing down from a year ago when consumers were stuck at home, the retailer still reported that U.S. e-commerce sales grew 6% year over year in its latest quarter, for the period ending July 31. As of 7 a.m. EDT, futures on the <b>Dow Jones Industrial Average</b> (DJINDICES:^DJI) were down 18 points to 35,073. <b>S&amp;P 500</b> (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) futures fell 2 points to 4,518, and <b>Nasdaq Composite</b> (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) futures dropped 10 points to 15,665.79.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, downward moves from a couple of stocks in different areas could weigh on the market on Wednesday. Both <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PATH\">UiPath</a> </b>(NYSE:PATH) and <b>Coty </b>(NYSE:COTY) were down sharply in premarket trading, and their combined negativity could eat away at some of the bullishness that's been pervasive in the investing community lately.</p>\n<p><b>UiPath deals with disappointment</b></p>\n<p>Shares of UiPath traded down 8% in pre-market trading Wednesday morning. The enterprise automation software company reported solid results, but they weren't enough to make investors happy.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/97c55607a53371c6ece1dba463e06c2d\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>These aren't the kind of robots UiPath uses, but the benefit for workers is similar. Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<p>UiPath's second-quarter numbers had some impressive gains. Sales were up 40% from year-ago levels, as annualized recurring revenue climbed 60% year over year. The company got contributions from both new and existing customers, as dollar-based net retention rates came in at 144% while UiPath boasted a total of 9,100 clients as of the end of the quarter.</p>\n<p>However, a couple of things weighed on sentiment. First, UiPath saw a substantial loss of more than $100 million, translating into a $0.19-per-share loss. Perhaps more importantly, UiPath's forward guidance didn't meet every investor's expectations, with UiPath calling for full-year annualized recurring revenue to finish somewhere between $876 million and $881 million. The company also believes it will post another adjusted operating loss in the third quarter.</p>\n<p>UiPath's robotic process automation is catching on, but that doesn't guarantee the company complete success. Instead, investors have to hope that UiPath will up its game to meet the high expectations they have for the company.</p>\n<p><b>Coty's investors cash in</b></p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Coty saw its stock drop about 8% in premarket trading. The move reversed a recent rally, but it made sense given that <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of its key investors chose to take advantage of a recent jump in its share price to sell shares.</p>\n<p>Investors in Coty had responded favorably to the cosmetics company's most recent earnings report in late August. Coty has been going through a substantial turnaround plan, as the business had risked falling out of fashion permanently without some big investments in the key Cover Girl brand and its other key assets.</p>\n<p>Yet late Tuesday, Coty announced it had registered a secondary offering of 50 million shares of its stock. The offering won't raise any new capital for Coty, but it will allow an affiliate of investment firm <b>KKR </b>(NYSE:KKR) to sell shares it owns at the new higher price.</p>\n<p>Investors don't like it when their institutional counterparts decide to cash out even with a relatively minor blip in price. The move over the past couple of weeks has been sizable, but the stock still trades below its best levels of the year and from where it traded before the pandemic began. S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) futures fell 2 points to 4,518, and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) futures dropped 10 points to 15,665.79.\nUnfortunately, downward moves from a couple of stocks in different areas could weigh on the market on Wednesday. Both UiPath (NYSE:PATH) and Coty (NYSE:COTY) were down sharply in premarket trading, and their combined negativity could eat away at some of the bullishness that's been pervasive in the investing community lately.\nUiPath deals with disappointment\nShares of UiPath traded down 8% in pre-market trading Wednesday morning. The enterprise automation software company reported solid results, but they weren't enough to make investors happy.\n\nThese aren't the kind of robots UiPath uses, but the benefit for workers is similar. Image source: Getty Images.\nUiPath's second-quarter numbers had some impressive gains. Sales were up 40% from year-ago levels, as annualized recurring revenue climbed 60% year over year. The company got contributions from both new and existing customers, as dollar-based net retention rates came in at 144% while UiPath boasted a total of 9,100 clients as of the end of the quarter.\nHowever, a couple of things weighed on sentiment. First, UiPath saw a substantial loss of more than $100 million, translating into a $0.19-per-share loss. Perhaps more importantly, UiPath's forward guidance didn't meet every investor's expectations, with UiPath calling for full-year annualized recurring revenue to finish somewhere between $876 million and $881 million. The company also believes it will post another adjusted operating loss in the third quarter.\nUiPath's robotic process automation is catching on, but that doesn't guarantee the company complete success. Instead, investors have to hope that UiPath will up its game to meet the high expectations they have for the company.\nCoty's investors cash in\nMeanwhile, Coty saw its stock drop about 8% in premarket trading. The move reversed a recent rally, but it made sense given that one of its key investors chose to take advantage of a recent jump in its share price to sell shares.\nInvestors in Coty had responded favorably to the cosmetics company's most recent earnings report in late August. Coty has been going through a substantial turnaround plan, as the business had risked falling out of fashion permanently without some big investments in the key Cover Girl brand and its other key assets.\nYet late Tuesday, Coty announced it had registered a secondary offering of 50 million shares of its stock. The offering won't raise any new capital for Coty, but it will allow an affiliate of investment firm KKR (NYSE:KKR) to sell shares it owns at the new higher price.\nInvestors don't like it when their institutional counterparts decide to cash out even with a relatively minor blip in price. The move over the past couple of weeks has been sizable, but the stock still trades below its best levels of the year and from where it traded before the pandemic began. But many investors say there is no better place to be right now.</p>\n<p>Major U.S. stock indexes sank Monday, with theDow Jones Industrial Average losing more than 600 points, or 1.8%, asconcerns grew that a defaultby real-estate developer China Evergrande Group could spur a widespread retreat from riskier assets. Percolating worries about a slowdown in economic growth, ongoing supply-chain issues andrising deathstied to the Delta variant of the coronavirus added to the volatility.</p>\n<p>For months, investors have been bracing for apullback such as this, warning in some cases that the U.S. stock market had run up too far, too fast. But now, with the Dow down 3.9% month-to-date, some traders say they aren’t concerned.</p>\n<p>“The short-term noise we’re dealing with does not change the fact that we think the economy is on solid footing and that equities still look attractive relative to other assets,” said Keith Lerner, co-chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services. “We still think the primary market trend over the next 12 months is higher.”</p>\n<p>That outlook matches the so-called TINA mantra that has carried the market higher for much of the past year, with many investors believing “there is no alternative” to stocks. With yields on other assets such as bonds hovering at such low levels, many investors have been willing to keep buying equities at record-high prices. Even amid the continuing pullback, some investors have said they are only tweaking their stock allocations and strategies rather than ditching equities in favor of other asset classes across the market.</p>\n<p>Evidence of that mind-set has been apparent in recent stock positioning data, which suggest that investors expect further gains ahead. Last week, for example, data from fund-flow tracker EPFR showed that investors poured the largest amount of money into U.S. stock-focused mutual and exchange-traded funds since March. Their buying spree totaled a net $45.7 billion in the week ended Sept. 15—more than the previous five weeks combined.</p>\n<p>Similar sentiment has been visible in U.S. equity futures, where institutional investors’ bullish positioning continues to hover near all-time highs, according to an RBC Capital Markets analysis of data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. “At current levels,” RBC analysts wrote in a recent note, “this indicator is signaling that investor positioning remains quite euphoric.”</p>\n<p>Optimistic positioningin U.S. stocks has been evident for months, helping the S&amp;P 500 charge to 54 records this year. But in a striking contrast from much of 2021, current positioning hasn’t been matched by sentiment surveys. Last week, for example, a survey from the American Association of Individual Investors showed that bullish sentiment among traders plunged to its lowest level since July of 2020. About 22% of individual investors reported that they expect stocks to rise over the next six months—down from a 2021 high of nearly 57% in April.</p>\n<p>Similar pessimism was recently captured in a survey by IHS Markit of 100 institutional investors employed by firms whose assets under management collectively total about $845 billion. That survey, conducted in September, found sinking risk appetite among the group, with more investors expecting returns to fall, rather than rise, over the next 30 days.</p>\n<p>The disconnect between sentiment surveys and positioning data underscores a strange year in financial markets and the “complete divergence in terms of what’s in people’s heads and what they are actually doing,” said Lori Calvasina, head of U.S. equity strategy at RBC.</p>\n<p>“I think we’ve seen high levels of nervousness emerge, but we haven’t seen high levels of fear emerge,” Ms. Calvasina continued. “Fear is what causes the positioning to come down. Nervousness causes them to move things around.”</p>\n<p>For now, some investors say they have been using the continuing weakness to reallocate money into other sectors or strategize about plays later in the year. Mr. Lerner of Truist, for example, said that small-cap stocks are on his radar for the fourth quarter, in part because of the recent weakness of the group. “The setup is improving based on negative sentiment, attractive valuations and strong earnings trends,” he said.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, recent data from a Bank of America Global Research survey showed that the average cash balance among fund managers now sits at 4.3%, only a slight increase from the 4.2% recorded the month before. Meanwhile, a net 50% of fund managers are overweight global equities.</p>\n<p>“One of the things that we’ve been talking about is this allocation toward equities, which seems like a very bullish outlook,” said David A. Jones, director of global investment strategy at BofA Securities. “But really, our feeling is that it’s a result of people having nowhere else to invest. But many investors say there is no better place to be right now.\nMajor U.S. stock indexes sank Monday, with theDow Jones Industrial Average losing more than 600 points, or 1.8%, asconcerns grew that a defaultby real-estate developer China Evergrande Group could spur a widespread retreat from riskier assets. Percolating worries about a slowdown in economic growth, ongoing supply-chain issues andrising deathstied to the Delta variant of the coronavirus added to the volatility.\nFor months, investors have been bracing for apullback such as this, warning in some cases that the U.S. stock market had run up too far, too fast. But now, with the Dow down 3.9% month-to-date, some traders say they aren’t concerned.\n“The short-term noise we’re dealing with does not change the fact that we think the economy is on solid footing and that equities still look attractive relative to other assets,” said Keith Lerner, co-chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services. “We still think the primary market trend over the next 12 months is higher.”\nThat outlook matches the so-called TINA mantra that has carried the market higher for much of the past year, with many investors believing “there is no alternative” to stocks. With yields on other assets such as bonds hovering at such low levels, many investors have been willing to keep buying equities at record-high prices. Even amid the continuing pullback, some investors have said they are only tweaking their stock allocations and strategies rather than ditching equities in favor of other asset classes across the market.\nEvidence of that mind-set has been apparent in recent stock positioning data, which suggest that investors expect further gains ahead. Last week, for example, data from fund-flow tracker EPFR showed that investors poured the largest amount of money into U.S. stock-focused mutual and exchange-traded funds since March. Their buying spree totaled a net $45.7 billion in the week ended Sept. 15—more than the previous five weeks combined.\nSimilar sentiment has been visible in U.S. equity futures, where institutional investors’ bullish positioning continues to hover near all-time highs, according to an RBC Capital Markets analysis of data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. “At current levels,” RBC analysts wrote in a recent note, “this indicator is signaling that investor positioning remains quite euphoric.”\nOptimistic positioningin U.S. stocks has been evident for months, helping the S&P 500 charge to 54 records this year. But in a striking contrast from much of 2021, current positioning hasn’t been matched by sentiment surveys. Last week, for example, a survey from the American Association of Individual Investors showed that bullish sentiment among traders plunged to its lowest level since July of 2020. About 22% of individual investors reported that they expect stocks to rise over the next six months—down from a 2021 high of nearly 57% in April.\nSimilar pessimism was recently captured in a survey by IHS Markit of 100 institutional investors employed by firms whose assets under management collectively total about $845 billion. That survey, conducted in September, found sinking risk appetite among the group, with more investors expecting returns to fall, rather than rise, over the next 30 days.\nThe disconnect between sentiment surveys and positioning data underscores a strange year in financial markets and the “complete divergence in terms of what’s in people’s heads and what they are actually doing,” said Lori Calvasina, head of U.S. equity strategy at RBC.\n“I think we’ve seen high levels of nervousness emerge, but we haven’t seen high levels of fear emerge,” Ms. Calvasina continued. “Fear is what causes the positioning to come down. Nervousness causes them to move things around.”\nFor now, some investors say they have been using the continuing weakness to reallocate money into other sectors or strategize about plays later in the year.
