While in part it makes sense considering that a large portion of growth names have suffered a similar fate so far due to various macroeconomic issues, Palantir’s latest decline nevertheless is not justified in my opinion.</p><p>Even though we might be on a brink of a global recession, the company’s latest earnings report indicated that there’s a great demand for its commercial software offerings, which could help the business to weather the upcoming challenges with relative ease. Add to this the fact that in recent months we’ve seen an increase in demand for Palantir’s software offerings that mitigate the supply chain disruptions in particular and help customers tackle the geopolitical challenges as well, and it becomes obvious that the business is more than likely to continue to deliver aggressive returns in the foreseeable future. That’s one of the main reasons why I continue to be bullish on the company and hold its shares in my portfolio.</p><h2><b>Commercial Business Continues To Deliver</b></h2><p>A month ago, shortly after the release of Palantir’s Q3 earnings report, I wrote an article on the company that focused mostly on highlighting the importance of its governmental software solutions to organizations, federal agencies, and institutions from the healthcare and defense sectors. As Palantir continues to tighten its cooperation with the American military-industrial complex, there’s also a case to be made that its commercial software offerings have all the chances to help the company to increase its presence within the private sector as well.</p><p>If we once again go through the company’s latest earnings report and take a look at the performance of Palantir’s commercial side of the business, we would see that the U.S. commercial revenue alone increased by 53% Y/Y in Q3, while the U.S. commercial customer count increased by 124 % Y/Y to 59 customers.</p><p>There are several reasons why Palantir’s commercial business is experiencing such growth at a time when the worsening macroeconomic environment along with a more hawkish monetary policy of the Federal Reserve had already diminished the ability of most private businesses to generate the same aggressive returns that they were generating a year or two ago.</p><p>First of all, in recent quarters, Palantir has greatly improved the performance of its Foundry platform, which is being used by companies and organizations to better make data-driven decisions when running their day-to-day operations. The latest FoundryCon event has served as an example to others of the capabilities of Palantir’s software for commercial enterprises, as it highlighted the practical uses of Foundry in the daily life of several Fortune 500 companies.</p><p>Secondly, it appears that Palantir’s Apollo platform, which became a standalone product only a year ago, has already been able to expand the company’s total addressable market (&#34;TAM&#34;). Back in October, I wrote an article dedicated solely to the capabilities of Apollo and how it could help Palantir solve the issue of the slow onboarding of customers and increase the growth of its overall customer count at the same time. Considering that in Q3, Palantir’s total customer count was 337, up by 66% Y/Y, it appears that Apollo is indeed helping Palantir to solve its scalability issues, which helps the business to continue to generate aggressive returns in the current turbulent environment.</p><p>Add to this the fact that a couple of weeks ago even Lockheed Martin (LMT) announced that it’s teaming up with Palantir to improve its capability to release its own software updates via the use of Apollo, and it becomes obvious that Palantir’s software is likely to remain in high demand for a while. Thanks to this, it’s safe to assume that the company would be able to continue to generate aggressive returns and increase its governmental and commercial customer count even in the current environment.</p><h2><b>The Changing Structure Of World’s Supply Chains</b></h2><p>Just as it’s the case with governments, which began to gradually decouple from China and Russia in order to stop over-relying on adversaries, the same appears to be true for private enterprises that started to actively diversify their supply chains in order to mitigate any geopolitical risks. Companies such as Apple (AAPL) are already actively relocating parts of their production to countries such as India, while the latest data indicates that the U.S. manufacturing orders from China have declined by 40% either due to the demand destruction or due to decoupling. This indicates that we’re already witnessing how the world’s supply chains are being reshaped right in front of our eyes as globalization unravels.</p><p>The good news is that Palantir offers a great supply chain solution to enterprises that are actively trying to mitigate global risks. Built on the Foundry platform, Palantir’s supply chain management software can be integrated into any environment and help businesses transform their supply chains without causing any major disruptions. Earlier this year, companies such as Micron (MU) and Hyundai (OTCPK:HYMTF) already started working with Palantir on their own supply chain projects, while the Tyson Foods (TSN) CTO recently explained how they were able to achieve $200 million in value savings by transforming their supply chains with the help of Palantir.</p><p>Considering this, it’s safe to assume that in the current changing geopolitical landscape, Palantir is more than likely to continue to increase the number of its clients, which should result in the continuous improvement of its top-line performance and the subsequent appreciation of its shares.</p><p>As of today, Palantir expects to generate ~$1.9 billion in revenues in FY22, which translates to a Y/Y growth of ~23%, while the street believes that the fair value of its stock currently is $9.74 per share. My two DCF models show that Palantir’s fair value is $10.03 per share and $12.08 per share in the conservative and optimistic scenarios, respectively, which indicates that in any of the scenarios its shares are undervalued and offer a decent upside at the current levels. Add to this the fact that Palantir has been decreasing its stock-based compensation expenses on a quarterly basis while its revenue improved and there’s a fair chance that its shares could significantly appreciate once the market conditions improve.</p><h2><b>Risks</b></h2><p>In the past, I’ve already stated that due to the hawkish monetary policy of the Federal Reserve, which could result in a severe recession, Palantir’s stock could continue to trade at the current distressed levels for a while until the overall conditions improve.</p><p>At the same time, I don’t expect the company to show profitability on its books anytime soon, which is a major downside for lots of value investors. While the company itself is greatly profitable on an operational level and with no debt along with $2.4 billion in cash reserves it’ll more than likely be able to weather the upcoming macroeconomic and geopolitical challenges with relative ease, the cost of retaining talent to aggressively grow the business is relatively high, which negatively affects Palantir’s bottom-line performance. Considering that the unfavorable market environment has already negatively affected the share prices of various growth names, investors shouldn’t expect a rapid appreciation of Palantir’s stock price in the coming months.</p><p>The good news though is that Palantir has been cutting its stock-based compensations for a while already and at the same time has been actively accelerating hiring at a time when tech companies are cutting jobs, which indicates that the demand for its governmental and commercial offerings is likely to remain high. If that’s the case, then we should expect Palantir to continue to scale its business and aggressively grow its top-line performance. Once the overall market conditions improve, Palantir’s stock has a reasonable chance to once again begin to aggressively appreciate.</p><h2><b>The Bottom Line</b></h2><p>Despite the latest depreciation of its share price, Palantir itself has proved that it can continue to grow its business at a double-digit rate despite the volatile macroeconomic and geopolitical environment. The aggressive growth of its commercial business coupled with the increased demand for software that could mitigate the downside of supply chain disruptions indicates that the company is more than likely to tackle the upcoming challenges with relative ease and continue to increase the number of its clients at the same time. the US.</p><p>MUST’s total assets under management stood at US$2.2 billion as of 31 December 2021.</p><p>The REIT’s unit price has half its value year to date and hit an all-time low of US$0.31 recently.</p><p>Gross revenue for the first half of fiscal 2022 (1H2022) rose 10.6% year on year to US$100.4 million.</p><p>Net property income (NPI) inched up 2.8% year on year to US$57.6 million.</p><p>DPU, however, dipped by 3.3% year on year to US$0.0261.</p><p>MUST’s portfolio occupancy stood high at 90% as of 30 June 2022 but physical occupancy hovered at just 28% with many employees working from home.</p><p>The REIT’s gearing stood at 42.4% with 85.7% of its borrowings on fixed rates.</p><h3><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ODBU.SI\">United Hampshire US REIT</a></h3><p>United Hampshire US REIT, or UHREIT, owns a total of 21 grocery and necessity-based properties along with two self-storage properties, all located in the US.</p><p>Total AUM stood at US$732.9 million as of 30 June 2022 (inclusive of an acquisition made on 28 July).</p><p>UHREIT saw its unit price skid to an all-time low of US$0.46 and is down 28.4% year to date.</p><p>For 1H2022, gross revenue increased 18.5% year on year to US$31.8 million.</p><p>NPI increased by 10.6% year on year to US$22.6 million but DPU fell 4.6% year on year to US$0.0291 due to top-ups and stipulated damages.</p><p>UHREIT maintained a high portfolio occupancy of 96.2% as of 30 June 2022 and had an aggregate leverage ratio of 38% with 80.5% of its debt on fixed rates.</p><h3><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MXNU.SI\">Elite Commercial REIT</a></h3><p>Elite Commercial REIT owns 155 predominantly freehold commercial properties in the UK with an AUM of £517.7 million as of 30 June 2022.</p><p>The REIT saw its unit price slide to an all-time low of £0.46 recently and is down 28.4% year to date.</p><p>Revenue rose 17.7% year on year to £18.7 million with distributable income climbing 9.7% year on year to £12.2 million.</p><p>DPU, however, was down by 2.7% year on year to 2.56 pence.</p><p>The REIT’s gearing stood at 41.9% with 63% of its total loans on fixed rates.</p><p>There’s potential rental income upside come April 2023 with Elite going through a rent review with its tenants, many of which have their tenancy agreements indexed to the consumer price index with a minimum increase of 1% and a maximum of 5%.</p><h3><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CWBU.SI\">Cromwell European REIT</a></h3><p>Cromwell European REIT, or CEREIT, has a portfolio of 110 industrial and office properties located in major cities in countries such as France, Finland, Denmark, Germany, and Poland.</p><p>The REIT’s AUM stood at €2.6 billion as of 30 June income (NPI) inched up 2.8% year on year to US$57.6 million.DPU, however, dipped by 3.3% year on year to US$0.0261.MUST’s portfolio occupancy stood high at 90% as of 30 June 2022 but physical occupancy hovered at just 28% with many employees working from home.The REIT’s gearing stood at 42.4% with 85.7% of its borrowings on fixed rates.United Hampshire US REITUnited Hampshire US REIT, or UHREIT, owns a total of 21 grocery and necessity-based properties along with two self-storage properties, all located in the US.Total AUM stood at US$732.9 million as of 30 June 2022 (inclusive of an acquisition made on 28 July).UHREIT saw its unit price skid to an all-time low of US$0.46 and is down 28.4% year to date.For 1H2022, gross revenue increased 18.5% year on year to US$31.8 million.NPI The &#34;three stocks to avoid&#34; in my column last week that I thought were going to lose to the market -- <b>Cracker Barrel Old Country Store</b>, <b>Rite Aid</b>, and <b>Lennar</b> -- fell 6%, 29%, and 3%, respectively, averaging out to a 12.7% decline.</p><p>The <b>S&amp;P 500</b> experienced a 2.9% move lower, so I was correct. I have been right in 32 of the past 50 weeks, or 64% of the time.</p><p>Now let&#39;s look at the week ahead. I see <b>Apple</b>, <b>Conagra Brands</b>, and <b>Gold Fields</b> as stocks you might want to consider steering clear of this week. Let&#39;s go over my near-term concerns with all three investments.</p><h2><b>1. Apple</b></h2><p>The country&#39;s most valuable company by market cap -- the only one currently perched above $2 trillion in value -- proved mortal last week. The consumer tech giant tumbled 8%, a big drop for a titan that was previously holding up well against the correcting market. Apple is finally trading closer to its 52-week low than its high.</p><p>The new iPhone 14 may have generated some buzz when it was unveiled a few weeks ago, but consumers have tired of annual upgrade cycles for smartphones. The incremental improvements are nice, but they may not be enough to woo shoppers who are already clutching their savings harder than they have in a long time.</p><p>There was a notable analyst downgrade last week. Wamsi Mohan at <b>Bank of America</b> thinks the global climate of inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical conflict will weigh on the previously waterproof Apple stock. As a company with heavy volume outside the U.S. market, it&#39;s worth noting that the strong dollar will eat into reported revenue from those overseas transactions. There was also a Bloomberg story reporting that Apple is asking suppliers to pare back iPhone 14 production in light of uninspiring global demand.</p><p>Is Apple overvalued at 23 times trailing earnings? Apple is a company that seems to have one good fiscal year followed by two years of single-digit and sometimes even negative revenue growth. It could bounce back after last week&#39;s setback, but when I see all those wireless company ads pitching iPhones for practically nothing, I see a behemoth behind an aspirational brand that could be in trouble.</p><h2><b>2. Conagra Brands</b></h2><p>Instinctively, you don&#39;t want to bet against Conagra Brands. It&#39;s the company that stocks supermarket shelves with Duncan Hines cake mix, Slim Jim jerky, and Hunt&#39;s ketchup. Even in a recession, we have to eat. The problem for a king of brands is that rising food prices are probably sending shoppers to lower-margin house brands. Why buy Conagra&#39;s Pam or Reddi-Wip when the store-brand version of the cooking spray or whipped cream is easier on the pocket?</p><p>Conagra reports financial results for its fiscal first quarter on Thursday morning. Analysts aren&#39;t holding out for much, and it&#39;s not as if Conagra is an upbeat earnings surprise machine after beating Wall Street profit targets just once over the past three reports. The market sees Conagra growing its revenue by less than 5% this fiscal year, with earnings per share rising even less than that. Sales are expected to slow to just 1% growth next fiscal year. The 3.8% yield should provide some support, but it&#39;s not exactly the safe haven it plays itself out to be.</p><h2><b>3. Gold Fields</b></h2><p>September was brutal. It was the market&#39;s worst month since March 2020. It was also the worst September -- a month that has historically been challenging -- in 20 years. The bear market may not be over, but it wouldn&#39;t surprise me if there was at least a small bounce early in October. This call finds me eyeing Gold Fields.</p><p>I&#39;m not an expert on South African gold mining stocks, but I saw what happened last week. As most stocks tumbled, precious metals proved shiny. Half of the 10 largest stocks to gain at least 10% last week were gold miners, and Gold Fields commands the largest market of the five stocks on that list. The fundamentals for Gold Fields are fine, and it&#39;s in the process of gobbling up a smaller player to expand its global footprint. However, I needed to find a sector that could slide at the expense of a market rally, and tag, you&#39;re it, Gold Fields.</p><p>It&#39;s going to be a bumpy road for some of these investments. The \"three stocks to avoid\" in my column last week that I thought were going to lose to the market -- Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Rite Aid, and Lennar -- fell 6%, 29%, and 3%, respectively, averaging out to a 12.7% decline.The S&P 500 experienced a 2.9% move lower, so I was correct. I have been right in 32 of the past 50 weeks, or 64% of the time.Now let's look at the week ahead. I see Apple, Conagra Brands, and Gold Fields as stocks you might want to consider steering clear of this week. Let's go over my near-term concerns with all three investments.1. AppleThe country's most valuable company by market cap -- the only one currently perched above $2 trillion in value -- proved mortal last week. The consumer tech giant tumbled 8%, a big drop for a titan that was previously holding up well against the correcting market. Apple is finally trading closer to its 52-week low than its high.The new iPhone 14 may have generated some buzz when it was unveiled a few weeks ago, but consumers have tired of annual upgrade cycles for smartphones. The incremental improvements are nice, but they may not be enough to woo shoppers who are already clutching their savings harder than they have in a long time.There was a notable analyst downgrade last week. Wamsi Mohan at Bank of America thinks the global climate of inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical conflict will weigh on the previously waterproof Apple stock. As a company with heavy volume outside the U.S. market, it's worth noting that the strong dollar will eat into reported revenue from those overseas transactions. There was also a Bloomberg story reporting that Apple is asking suppliers to pare back iPhone 14 production in light of uninspiring global demand.Is Apple overvalued at 23 times trailing earnings? Apple is a company that seems to have one good fiscal year followed by two years of single-digit and sometimes even negative revenue growth. It could bounce back after last week's setback, but when I see all those wireless company ads pitching iPhones for practically nothing, I see a behemoth behind an aspirational brand that could be in trouble.2. Conagra BrandsInstinctively, you don't want to bet against Conagra Brands. It's the company that stocks supermarket shelves with Duncan Hines cake mix, Slim Jim jerky, and Hunt's ketchup. Even in a recession, we have to eat. The problem for a king of brands is that rising food prices are probably sending shoppers to lower-margin house brands. Why buy Conagra's Pam or Reddi-Wip when the store-brand version of the cooking spray or whipped cream is easier on the pocket?Conagra reports financial results for its fiscal first quarter on Thursday morning. Analysts aren't holding out for much, and it's not as if Conagra is an upbeat earnings surprise machine after beating Wall Street profit targets just once over the past three reports. The market sees Conagra growing its revenue by less than 5% this fiscal year, with earnings per share rising even less than that. Sales are expected to slow to just 1% growth next fiscal year. The 3.8% yield should provide some support, but it's not exactly the safe haven it plays itself out to be.3. Gold FieldsSeptember was brutal. It was the market's worst month since March 2020. It was also the worst September -- a month that has historically been challenging -- in 20 years. The bear market may not be over, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was at least a small bounce early in October. This call finds me eyeing Gold Fields.I'm not an expert on South African gold mining stocks, but I saw what happened last week. As most stocks tumbled, precious metals proved shiny. Half of the 10 largest stocks to gain at least 10% last week were gold miners, and Gold Fields commands the largest market of the five stocks on that list. The fundamentals for Gold Fields are fine, and it's in the process of gobbling up a smaller player to expand its global footprint. However, I needed to find a sector that could slide at the expense of a market rally, and tag, you're it, Gold Fields.It's going to be a bumpy road for some of these investments. They’ve never had a particularly good reputation, since many believe — I think wrongly — that there’s something untoward about betting that a stock’s price will go down.</p><p>For this column, I’m not interested in short-sellers’ integrity and virtue (or lack thereof). My focus instead is on whether their behavior can be used to time the market.</p><p>The answer is a resounding yes, according to research conducted by Matthew Ringgenberg, a finance professor at the University of Utah and one of academia’s leading experts on short selling. In research published in the Journal of Financial Economics in 2016, he reported that “short interest is arguably the strongest known predictor of aggregate stock returns.”</p><p>In an interview earlier this week, Ringgenberg added that short interest for the most part has continued to do an admirable job in the six years since his research was published. A year ago I reported that Ringgenberg’s data was bullish for the subsequent 12 months: “Short-selling may be helping to keep the bull market alive,” I wrote.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c235acc6ce62839261bb7c42ddc66285\" tg-width=\"1085\" tg-height=\"722\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>Fortunately for the market now, short-sellers’ message is slightly more bullish than it was a year ago. This is evident in the chart above, which plots an equally weighted average of individual stocks’ short-interest ratios. Notice that this average today is slightly lower (and so more bullish) than it was in early 2021.</p><p>What’s more noteworthy is the contrast with how short sellers behaved leading up to and during 2008’s Great Financial Crisis (GFC). As you can see from the chart, they became increasingly bearish over a couple of years prior to the GFC, and became even more bearish in the first months of 2008, just as the bear market was beginning. It’s a relief that the short sellers are not reacting in the same way now. The “short seller data do not support an expectation of a bear market,” Ringgenberg said.</p><p>At the same time, it should be noted that short sellers haven’t reacted to the market’s recent selloff by becoming significantly more bullish. I wasn’t sure what he meant, he added the stock market crash, what did I think? The question took the notion that the market is going to crash as received wisdom. He was asking what I thought the ramifications would be. I said that I didn’t think there would be a crash. That was met with a bit of awkward silence. Other conversations this weekend with friends and acquaintances yielded a certainty that inflation will be intractable and will be a persistent feature of the economic landscape for years to come. I don’t agree, I may have underestimated how long inflation news would persist, but I believe that inflation will begin to recede in mid-May, certainly, none of these conditions portends a crash.</p><p>Crashes happen when no <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> is expecting them. That everyone is talking about millionaires who were first in into whatever fad everyone is convinced will never go down. The most recent that comes to mind is the teenage crypto millionaires. I am not claiming that crypto is about to crash, just using it as an example. When no one believes the stock markets (or real estate and yes Bitcoin) can EVER crash that is when it really hits hard. This may sound familiar to the older folk who’ve lived through the housing bubble, or dot com bubble. If not let me familiarize you with the phenomenon. Everyone and his brother is in the market including your cab driver. Pretty soon everyone is buying in and sure they will be millionaires. It’s at that point that the market has run out of buyers, that&#39;s when a &#34;crash&#34; happens. The catalyst doesn’t matter right now, It’s like setting up dominoes standing up in a long row, even the tiniest touch on the first one can create a huge chain reaction. If everyone is already “All In” and maybe even leveraged the only thing to do is sell. That is how a crash happens.</p><h2><b>Here it is the complete opposite, everyone is pushing the notion of a crash</b></h2><p>Everyone is talking about a bear market, the economy is going into a recession, why? Take your pick. The market is running out of steam. No! The economy is overheating and Powell is behind the curve on inflation! He must raise interest rates 200-300 basis points, and then he’ll cause a recession by overtightening. Have you noticed that these two opposing notions are punted in the same conversation? Let’s get this straight, a recession means the economy has slowed so much that it is falling. Officially, economists count an economy in recession if there are 2 quarters with negative growth. While inflation is usually a result of the market growing TOO FAST. So naturally the purveyors of hot air resort to using stagflation, which encompasses both zero growth AND inflation. This conflation is gaining a lot of currency as those who promote the notion that stagflation happens all the time. In fact, it is exceedingly rare, rarer than a blue moon. The only time stagflation has ever happened in modern history was when the term was coined, during the Carter administration. Will rising interest rates create more chips? More homes? More cars? No, raising interest rates will slow the demand for those items. I am not against raising interest rates, but even as interest rates are rising that the economy will continue to grow, and supply will return lowering prices. I believe that Powell will not overreact, I still see no evidence to believe otherwise, no matter how many times pundits bring it up.</p><p>Let me try and tie all of this together, 2022 is not the 1970s, Stagflation is a rare thing to the special circumstances of the 1970s. A wage-price hike spiral is very unlikely to happen. Surprisingly or perhaps not, worker wages are the biggest expense and the largest influence on inflation. Remember I said that the 70s had hardly any productivity? That is not at all true today.</p><h2><b>Market sentiment gets super negative when participants’ imaginations are unbound</b></h2><p>A big rule about market behavior is how it hates the unknown. The market will embrace every negative notion and worst-case scenario. The worst-case scenario that is remotely viable in this case is stagflation so that is where the chatter is. For every piece of news, people are inventing new ways to hate the market and convince the person next to them to dump stocks. In a market like this with most people being sellers, it wouldn&#39;t take anything at all positive to create a buying stampede. In this kind of setup</p><h2><b>Let’s be real the last few months have not been all that fun</b></h2><p>Historically 15% down on the S&amp;P is not unusual, even the 20% correction on the Nasdaq is not unusual. You can have episodes like this and not only regain ATH but exceed the all-time high in no time. On the other hand, long-running bear markets start this way. Lucky for us, you can’t have a sustained bear market without a recession, and we aren’t having that. At some point, the market will adjust valuation, create a base and begin to rise again. The market rises about 80% of the time, so without a degrading economy, you may have a momentary fall to the 20% level but are likely to bounce back. That is kind of where we are now, valuations have been adjusted downward, for a laundry list of reasons, Covid, inflation, Putin’s war, Interest hikes that could hit the economy. I admit we have had quite a run of negativity. I also admit that the indexes have not found a support level. However we are getting very close, the forward PE is about 18 times on the S&amp;P, which should be the right valuation even at +2.5% on the 10-year.</p><h2><b>Prediction time</b></h2><p>I am not saying we will take off like a rocket, we had instead very rocky trading last week. I do believe that leading to the Fed announcement we could have some weakness and then a decent pop on the news conference, as I expect Powell to find his dovish voice again. I guess this is another prediction. The reason why I am saying Powell will sound conciliatory is the likelihood of a default of sovereign debt by Russia. This might have a bigger effect on European banks than domestic, the Fed may fear that it might disrupt the liquidity of the US bond market. Our banks have been through all kinds of simulations for years and are not allowed to leverage up anywhere near where banks were in 2007 when we had the housing bubble. This may yet be another reason for the market to sell off when the default is announced perhaps in a week or 2. I think this will be a very good opportunity to confirm that we have finally found that base. Before then I think we get a decent pop from Powell’s performance</p><h2><b>We haven’t achieved a base as yet but definitely have a trading range</b></h2><p>We first touched back to 4200 on the S&amp;P in January, we’ve trading around this level to now. We have been chopping around this level and higher. We are not yet in a downtrend on the S&amp;P. Let’s take a look at the chart.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b7ec679d2f3edba677a4e17a7b1e8fd9\" tg-width=\"1109\" tg-height=\"581\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>seekingalpha.com</p><p>Well, nothing is screaming at me, but this 4200ish level could be a base. If my prediction is correct, looking at this chart I could see S&amp;P reaching 4300, if we can sustain a rally for more than one day.</p><h2><b>Markets like this take a lot of attention and self-control</b></h2><p>Though it feels very stressful, and not as much fun to be in the market, I require myself to review the facts and still find much to be optimistic regarding prospects for a strong finish to 2022. I could very well envision reaching higher highs (5200+?) before December. Don’t let your emotions get in the way of cutting losers. I won&#39;t say I am perfect on that score, but I try to be aware when I am emotionally overly attached. There&#39;s a fine line between having conviction and being emotionally attached. Trading is like any other high-performance activity, you get to a level where mental strength and self-awareness are just as important to success as technique or tactics. You need those qualities to monitor your mental state and whether you are overly attached to anyone&#39;s position and have the strength to counter that tendency. You must also have the mental strength to maintain conviction to hold a position if you have done the best to vet it from a fundamental side and technical aspect. It takes guts to watch one of your stocks fall further and further and not let it get to you.</p><p>Amazon (AMZN) announced a 1 to 20 split. I predicted this weeks ago. Here is what I think they do next. The week ending February 5th, I wrote in my weekly analysis that AMZN will likely be the next to announce a split. I am basing my speculation on what happens next by who Andrew Jassy is, and also something I thought made a ton of sense years ago, and that is to spin off AWS. AWS is by all rights a very substantial company in its own right and could be worth $750B to 1 Trillion on its own. AWS really has little to do with the rest of AMZN. It just makes a ton of sense for the shareholders to have the company trade separately if only to boost the value of AMZN stock. As you may already know Jassy was the CEO of AWS before he was named CEO of all of AMZN. AWS is the fastest-growing part of AMZN, providing huge cash flow to fund the other parts of AMZN. The split still makes sense, AMZN could hold a special class of stock that gives them a dividend or hive off a huge amount of debt while interest rates are so low. The fact Jassy would see his baby trade as an independent creation is just a bonus. The boost in capitalization via the spin-off and the present value of a huge chunk of change to fund operations for years to come is a good trade-off. Also, the spin-off would lower the heat on the FCC suing them as a monopoly, which would be a huge distraction. The fact that he split the company and announced a buyback after years of not buying shares, tells me that he wants to boost the stock price. If he keeps the buyback as an ongoing program, the AWS is the ultimate move for shareholder value.</p><p>I don’t have a lot of exciting news about new trades. Really my current role right now is to try to manage my current positions and use the volatility to my advantage. So not a lot of visible movement but a lot of watchful waiting. Buying the dip yes, but is this the lowest low? Can the stock go lower? When my positions are green are they high enough to trim shares? That is less fun than falling in love with a new trade.</p><p>stocks can go lower, however, I do believe that the upside at this point for many tech names more than compensates the risk. Why do I harp on tech? Precisely because it has become very unfashionable. Many of the wise men and women have eschewed growth stocks, especially stocks that were the most esteemed only a few months ago. I am a reflexive contrarian, and this year has been building up to be my biggest contrarian play ever.</p><h2><b>My Trades</b></h2><p>First, the bad news was I had a position in DocuSign (DOCU) they announced earnings and revenue that was very good but forward guidance disappointed me. I promptly sold the position at 78 in the aftermarket. I really like the business model, so at some point, once DOCU finally finds support I will try to leg into it. Meanwhile, I will use the funds freed up from this name to buy more Upstart (UPST).</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Meta Platforms</a> (FB) spent $44.5 billion on share buybacks in 2021 leading the company to repurchase 8.4% of the current market cap. The stock is starting to have solid downside protection. It should continue to buy in shares at the same rate this year. FB recently had a gap down, charting shows that stocks tend to fill in gaps. I already started building a position, I am hoping it allows me to acquire more in the 180s.</p><p>Asana (ASAN) got punished for not projecting profits near term because they want to re-invest. I have a small position in it. I took profits a while ago. I’m going to rebuild the position again, they said they are giving up profits now to add capabilities to the product. I believe the stock will regain some altitude once the market comes back to its senses and reward the forward-thinking. You are supposed to invest in the future. If the CEO had no credibility and the track record of this company was bad I wouldn&#39;t buy in. Instead, it has an exceptional growth pattern, and the stock is on sale.</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/XPO\">XPO Logistics</a>, Inc.(XPO) stock rallied more than 8% in after-market trading on Tuesday after the logistics company announced plans to split itself into two publicly traded companies, a deal it said would be tax-free to shareholders. One of the companies will be one of the largest US companies in the LTL trucking business. The other part would encompass XPO&#39;s freight brokerage business, which matches loads from shipping customers to available trucks to carry them, and the other is its U.S. trucking business. This is essentially a technology adjacent cloud application business. I am very excited to receive this new company. Its European business and North American intermodal operations would be sold. The company said it expects to complete the spin-off in the fourth quarter of 2022, subject to the final approval of the XPO board. In a presentation to shareholders, XPO pegged 2021 revenue from its freight brokerage company at $4.8 billion, and from the trucking business at $4.1 billion. Shares of XPO ended the regular trading day up 2.7%.</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EXPE\">Expedia</a> (EXPE) Strong revenue growth FCF and mostly domestic travel so less affected by Ukraine. Still, this name has been hammered on every development in Ukraine. I currently have Call options, now I will accumulate the underlying equities.</p><p>Airbnb (ABNB) I think I bought this stock near its bottom, at about 150. I started this position 2 weeks ago and I need to fill this one up. I am hoping to get some in the 140s. I like the reopening related tech companies since Covid is in the rearview mirror.</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> (PYPL) is another once high flier that has fallen so much that it’s practically a value play. I have been adding to my position under 100, and I plan on continuing to do so this week.</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DDOG\">Datadog</a> (DDOG) I managed to do a fast money trade with DDOG in the aftermath of its earnings. I started buying it again, and I guess I should have waited even though I started buying at a lower level than the last time. I don’t agree, I may have underestimated how long inflation news would persist, but I believe that inflation will begin to recede in mid-May, certainly, none of these conditions portends a crash.Crashes happen when no one is expecting them. That everyone is talking about millionaires who were first in into whatever fad everyone is convinced will never go down. The most recent that comes to mind is the teenage crypto millionaires. I am not claiming that crypto is about to crash, just using it as an example. When no one believes the stock markets (or real estate and yes Bitcoin) can EVER crash that is when it really hits hard. This may sound familiar to the older folk who’ve lived through the housing bubble, or dot com bubble. If not let me familiarize you with the phenomenon. Everyone and his brother is in the market including your cab driver. Pretty soon everyone is buying in and sure they will be millionaires. It’s at that point that the market has run out of buyers, that's when a \"crash\" happens. The catalyst doesn’t matter right now, It’s like setting up dominoes standing up in a long row, even the tiniest touch on the first one can create a huge chain reaction. If everyone is already “All In” and maybe even leveraged the only thing to do is sell. That is how a crash happens.Here it is the complete opposite, everyone is pushing the notion of a crashEveryone is talking about a bear market, the economy is going into a recession, why? Take your pick. The market is running out of steam. No! The economy is overheating and Powell is behind the curve on inflation! He must raise interest rates 200-300 basis points, and then he’ll cause a recession by overtightening. Have you noticed that these two opposing notions are punted in the same conversation? Let’s get this straight, a recession means the economy has slowed so much that it is falling. Officially, economists count an economy in recession if there are 2 quarters with negative growth. While inflation is usually a result of the market growing TOO FAST. So naturally the purveyors of hot air resort to using stagflation, which encompasses both zero growth AND inflation. This conflation is gaining a lot of currency as those who promote the notion that stagflation happens all the time. In fact, it is exceedingly rare, rarer than a blue moon. The only time stagflation has ever happened in modern history was when the term was coined, during the Carter administration. Will rising interest rates create more chips? More homes? More cars? No, raising interest rates will slow the demand for those items. I am not against raising interest rates, but even as interest rates are rising that the economy will continue to grow, and supply will return lowering prices. I believe that Powell will not overreact, I still see no evidence to believe otherwise, no matter how many times pundits bring it up.Let me try and tie all of this together, 2022 is not the 1970s, Stagflation is a rare thing to the special circumstances of the 1970s. A wage-price hike spiral is very unlikely to happen. Surprisingly or perhaps not, worker wages are the biggest expense and the largest influence on inflation. Remember I said that the 70s had hardly any productivity? That is not at all true today.Market sentiment gets super negative when participants’ imaginations are unboundA big rule about market behavior is how it hates the unknown. The market will embrace every negative notion and worst-case scenario. The worst-case scenario that is remotely viable in this case is stagflation so that is where the chatter is. For every piece of news, people are inventing new ways to hate the market and convince the person next to them to dump stocks. In a market like this with most people being sellers, it wouldn't take anything at all positive to create a buying stampede. In this kind of setupLet’s be real the last few months have not been all that funHistorically 15% down on the S&P is not unusual, even the 20% correction on the Nasdaq is not unusual. You can have episodes like this and not only regain ATH but exceed the all-time high in no time. On the other hand, long-running bear markets start this way. Lucky for us, you can’t have a sustained bear market without a recession, and we aren’t having that. At some point, the market will adjust valuation, create a base and begin to rise again. The market rises about 80% of the time, so without a degrading economy, you may have a momentary fall to the 20% level but are likely to bounce back. That is kind of where we are now, valuations have been adjusted downward, for a laundry list of reasons, Covid, inflation, Putin’s war, Interest hikes that could hit the economy. I admit we have had quite a run of negativity. I also admit that the indexes have not found a support level. However we are getting very close, the forward PE is about 18 times on the S&P, which should be the right valuation even at +2.5% on the 10-year.Prediction timeI am not saying we will take off like a rocket, we had instead very rocky trading last week. I do believe that leading to the Fed announcement we could have some weakness and then a decent pop on the news conference, as I expect Powell to find his dovish voice again. I guess this is another prediction. The reason why I am saying Powell will sound conciliatory is the likelihood of a default of sovereign debt by Russia. This might have a bigger effect on European banks than domestic, the Fed may fear that it might disrupt the liquidity of the US bond market. Our banks have been through all kinds of simulations for years and are not allowed to leverage up anywhere near where banks were in 2007 when we had the housing bubble. This may yet be another reason for the market to sell off when the default is announced perhaps in a week or 2. I think this will be a very good opportunity to confirm that we have finally found that base. Before then I think we get a decent pop from Powell’s performanceWe haven’t achieved a base as yet but definitely have a trading rangeWe first touched back to 4200 on the S&P in January, we’ve trading around this level to now. We have been chopping around this level and higher. We are not yet in a downtrend on the S&P. You must also have the mental strength to maintain conviction to hold a position if you have done the best to vet it from a fundamental side and technical aspect. It takes guts to watch one of your stocks fall further and further and not let it get to you.Amazon (AMZN) announced a 1 to 20 split. I predicted this weeks ago. Here is what I think they do next. The week ending February 5th, I wrote in my weekly analysis that AMZN will likely be the next to announce a split. I am basing my speculation on what happens next by who Andrew Jassy is, and also something I thought made a ton of sense years ago, and that is to spin off AWS. AWS is by all rights a very substantial company in its own right and could be worth $750B to 1 Trillion on its own. AWS really has little to do with the rest of AMZN. It just makes a ton of sense for the shareholders to have the company trade separately if only to boost the value of AMZN stock. As you may already know Jassy was the CEO of AWS before he was named CEO of all of AMZN. AWS is the fastest-growing part of AMZN, providing huge cash flow to fund the other parts of AMZN. The split still makes sense, AMZN could hold a special class of stock that gives them a dividend or hive off a huge amount of debt while interest rates are so low. The fact Jassy would see his baby trade as an independent creation is just a bonus. The boost in capitalization via the spin-off and the present value of a huge chunk of change to fund operations for years to come is a good trade-off. Also, the spin-off would lower the heat on the FCC suing them as a monopoly, which would be a huge distraction. The fact that he split the company and announced a buyback after years of not buying shares, tells me that he wants to boost the stock price. If he keeps the buyback as an ongoing program, the AWS is the ultimate move for shareholder value.I don’t have a lot of exciting news about new trades. Really my current role right now is to try to manage my current positions and use the volatility to my advantage. So not a lot of visible movement but a lot of watchful waiting. One of the companies will be one of the largest US companies in the LTL trucking business. The other part would encompass XPO's freight brokerage business, which matches loads from shipping customers to available trucks to carry them, and the other is its U.S. trucking business. This is essentially a technology adjacent cloud application business. I am very excited to receive this new company. Its European business and North American intermodal operations would be sold. The company said it expects to complete the spin-off in the fourth quarter of 2022, subject to the final approval of the XPO board. In a presentation to shareholders, XPO pegged 2021 revenue from its freight brokerage company at $4.8 billion, and from the trucking business at $4.1 billion. Chairman Ryan Cohen, disclosed a large stake in Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. and is pushing the company to explore selling itself.The 9.8% stake puts Cohen among the retailer’s five biggest shareholders.Mr. Cohen, who also serves as chairman of GameStop Corp. , sent a letter to Bed Bath & Beyond’s board Sunday outlining steps it should take to turn the company around. Bed Bath & Beyond in January reported a big sales decline earlier for its third quarter. Its stock closed Friday at $16.18, down 69% from its 2021 closing high of $52.89.On social media Monday, individual investors cheered the news of Mr. Cohen’s stake. Mr. Cohen has built a band of loyal followers on Reddit and Twitter, in part, due to his cryptic tweets that frequently go viral online.The large stake by Mr. Cohen is reminiscent of his move to amass a position in GameStop and lay the groundwork to take over the company’s board. In late 2020, Mr. Cohen disclosed a nearly 10% stake in GameStop through his investment firm RC Ventures LLC and sent a letter to the videogame retailer’s board, urging it to improve the company’s e-commerce and explore other tech-driven opportunities.In January 2021, Mr. Cohen was added to GameStop’s board—and later ascended to chairman. His addition to the board ignited a frenzy in GameStop shares, sending them to an intraday high of $483 last year after starting the year trading below $20 a share.In his letter to Bed Bath & Beyond, Mr. Cohen said he wasn’t in a position to join Bed Bath & Beyond’s board personally, but said that doesn’t preclude RC Ventures from seeking to hold Bed Bath & Beyond’s board and management accountable. His letter said Bed Bath & Beyond should narrow its focus and maintain the correct inventory mix to meet demand. He wrote that the company should explore other ideas including a separation of the Buybuy Baby retail chain or a sale of the entire company.Bed Bath & Beyond was among a number of stocks that surged last year during the meme-stock mania.
