I thought it might be helpful for some folks to understand exactly what has to go on under the hood to keep these products doing what they say on the tin.</p><p>First, a big fat caveat: Any daily reset leveraged or inverse product exposes you to volatility decay; if you hold it for more than one day — over a week or a month — you’ll do worse than you expect if the underlying asset is volatile and better than you expect if the underlying asset is trending and low vol. Here’sanother articleon that. This article is about what goes on inside the fund and how it impacts the underlying stock, in this case.</p><p>Rather than use hypotheticals, let’s just look at the most popular of the new launches: the <b>AXS TLSA Bear Daily ETF (TSLQ)</b>. Putting aside the rather cheeky nod to the TSLAQ short-selling/conspiracy movement, the fund is a great example of how these products will work.</p><h2>Back to Basics</h2><p>When you buy TSLQ (or any other ETF), you’re not “putting money in” it. You’re buying shares of TSLQ on the open market from someone who has some shares they’re happy to sell you. Most often, this is a market maker either sitting on some amount of inventory or an authorized participant who can do a creation at the end of the day to make new shares to sell to you. If that happens (which it only does when there’s more demand than the market maker can naturally handle), it’s even easier for the TSLQ Authorized Participant than most because they simply put in the order to do a creation unit with a big chunk of cash. Overnight, they’ll magically receive new shares of TSLQ to cover any that they owe buyers like you.</p><p>Put another way, creating new shares of TSLQ is much more like how new shares of a mutual fund are created — cash goes into the portfolio manager, which they then need to “put to work.” TSLQ is also super simple there because all it will ever hold is a giant slug of cash and a swap or two.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a2b9675b85f5466ffae83c6ac7a342be\" tg-width=\"817\" tg-height=\"127\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>The work here is just keeping the books up to date and calling up the swap counterparty (generally a big bank) to tell them to adjust the amount of the swap, so the fund gets the -100% exposure to TSLA that it’s targeting. Those swaps are essentially just daily bar bets. If TSLA goes down by 1%, TSLQ and the counterparty compare notes, and the swap counterparty slides $160,000 across the table. If it goes the other way, TSLQ is the one paying the bet. Tomorrow, the same game is played. The swap counterparty, since they’re on the hook to provide the bet, then goes out and gets whatever exposure they need so as not to have any real risk in the transaction. In this case, they short Tesla. So the risk moves from point A — the ETF investor, to point B — the swap counterparty.</p><p>The truly paranoid could worry that there’s some exposure here to the swap counterparty going bankrupt in the middle of the day before the swap gets settled. Still, in practice, I’m unaware of any leveraged and inverse swap counterparty ever failing to settle. The worst-case scenario, however, is just the loss of one day’s returns, even if the swap counterparty just vanished into thin air. The cash is still sitting there on the books every day.</p><h2>The Procyclical Rebalance</h2><p>So looking above, why does the cash balance not perfectly match the value of the swaps as of the close on July 19, which is what the above data suggests? Likely because this was in between the end-of-day NAV being struck and the new exposure being set for the following day.</p><p>Every day, after the bar bet settles, each fund needs to reset the total value of the swaps so that tomorrow, if TSLA goes down by 1%, shareholders of TSLQ will go up by 1%. Here’s how I go about tracking that (something I got used to doing running up to Volmageddon when the VIX ETPs werehaving big impacts).</p><p>This morning (July 20, as of time of writing), TSLQ reported having $15,674,160. Since the fund is a -1X fund, that means the fund needs a swap this morning before trading begins worth -$15,674,160.</p><p>Here as I’m typing this, TSLA is up 1.14%. That makes the value of the fund’s swap -$15,852,845. The liability that the swap represents got bigger because TSLA got bigger. If the swap had to settle right this moment, the easiest way to think about this is that cash will now need to go from TSLQ to the swap counterparty just to settle up. So $178,685 leaves, making the new AUM of the fund $15,495,475. Now the fund needs -$15,495,475 in swap exposure going into tomorrow, but it’s still got $15,852,845 sitting in the swap account! So what does it do? It tells the counterpart to lighten up the swap by $357,371. That’s the trade done by the swap counterparty to even out their book at the end of the day.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/228096942fa23a9f15010978d80685ed\" tg-width=\"435\" tg-height=\"353\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>(NOTE: How swaps are technically accounted for on the books and how individual swaps are settled daily is itself a surprisingly complex topic. If you’re an insomniac, I’d start here with anInternational Swaps Dealers Association guide. I point this out to fend off the ‘but Dave!’ I’ll inevitably get because the above skips a dozen book entry steps to get to the rebal-trade number, which is what we really care about. Nothing brings out the truth like being wrong on the internet!)</p><p>Put another way, on a day that the underlying stock goes up, TSLQ has to be a net buyer, like clockwork. People’s brains break because it doesn’t matter what sign you put on the leverage factor; you’re still a net buyer. Imagine that AXS launched a 1.5X Bull Daily version of this fund. Instead of an inverse swap, the fund just sits on the cash and enters into a 1.5X swap.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6cf25829402f6003b0fb66806251a4df\" tg-width=\"432\" tg-height=\"346\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>In this case, the swap went in favor of our imaginary 1.5X Daily Bull, so the NAV of the fund went up, but that again means they have to get more exposure at the end of the day, which is the same as “lightening up” a negative exposure. That’s why we refer to all leveraged and inverse products with scheduled reset periods as “procyclical” — they (through the counterparty hedging) are always buyers on up days and sellers on down days.(None of this is a discovery, for what it’s worth.Pointing out the procyclicality of leveraged products is almost a closet industry in academic finance.)</p><h2>So What, Big Deal?</h2><p>This is a classic case of something that isn’t an issue until it is. With $15 million in assets, there’s absolutely no way TSLQ will influence the pricing of the $23 billion that changes hands of TSLA stock daily. TSLA regularly trades 3–4 million shares in the runup to the close. So we have to imagine a world where either one of these single-stock products absolutely moons or where there becomes a mismatch between the dollars in the ETP complex and the natural volume in the underlying stock. If, for example, TSLQ had 15 billion instead of 15 million, then the above trade would be about a quarter of a million shares into the close — a number that, if you know it’s coming, probably matters, especially if it’s every single day and always in the direction of that day’s performance. One has to imagine it’s exploitable. Mechanical trading nearly always is.</p><p>For now, we have a handful of products tracking extremely liquid underlying securities with low assets. The sky is most assuredly<i>not</i>falling. But imagine if these products existed in several flavors for every stock in the S&amp;P 500? What happens when a stock becomes a meme-darling, and the liquidity flows into the geared products out of proportion to the underlying stock? I thought it might be helpful for some folks to understand exactly what has to go on under the hood to keep these products doing what they say on the tin.First, a big fat caveat: Any daily reset leveraged or inverse product exposes you to volatility decay; if you hold it for more than one day — over a week or a month — you’ll do worse than you expect if the underlying asset is volatile and better than you expect if the underlying asset is trending and low vol. Here’sanother articleon that. This article is about what goes on inside the fund and how it impacts the underlying stock, in this case.Rather than use hypotheticals, let’s just look at the most popular of the new launches: the AXS TLSA Bear Daily ETF (TSLQ). Putting aside the rather cheeky nod to the TSLAQ short-selling/conspiracy movement, the fund is a great example of how these products will work.Back to BasicsWhen you buy TSLQ (or any other ETF), you’re not “putting money in” it. You’re buying shares of TSLQ on the open market from someone who has some shares they’re happy to sell you. Most often, this is a market maker either sitting on some amount of inventory or an authorized participant who can do a creation at the end of the day to make new shares to sell to you. If that happens (which it only does when there’s more demand than the market maker can naturally handle), it’s even easier for the TSLQ Authorized Participant than most because they simply put in the order to do a creation unit with a big chunk of cash. Overnight, they’ll magically receive new shares of TSLQ to cover any that they owe buyers like you.Put another way, creating new shares of TSLQ is much more like how new shares of a mutual fund are created — cash goes into the portfolio manager, which they then need to “put to work.” TSLQ is also super simple there because all it will ever hold is a giant slug of cash and a swap or two.The work here is just keeping the books up to date and calling up the swap counterparty (generally a big bank) to tell them to adjust the amount of the swap, so the fund gets the -100% exposure to TSLA that it’s targeting. Those swaps are essentially just daily bar bets. If TSLA goes down by 1%, TSLQ and the counterparty compare notes, and the swap counterparty slides $160,000 across the table. If it goes the other way, TSLQ is the one paying the bet. Tomorrow, the same game is played. The swap counterparty, since they’re on the hook to provide the bet, then goes out and gets whatever exposure they need so as not to have any real risk in the transaction. In this case, they short Tesla. So the risk moves from point A — the ETF investor, to point B — the swap counterparty.The truly paranoid could worry that there’s some exposure here to the swap counterparty going bankrupt in the middle of the day before the swap gets settled. Still, in practice, I’m unaware of any leveraged and inverse swap counterparty ever failing to settle. The worst-case scenario, however, is just the loss of one day’s returns, even if the swap counterparty just vanished into thin air. The cash is still sitting there on the books every day.The Procyclical RebalanceSo looking above, why does the cash balance not perfectly match the value of the swaps as of the close on July 19, which is what the above data suggests? Likely because this was in between the end-of-day NAV being struck and the new exposure being set for the following day.Every day, after the bar bet settles, each fund needs to reset the total value of the swaps so that tomorrow, if TSLA goes down by 1%, shareholders of TSLQ will go up by 1%. Here’s how I go about tracking that (something I got used to doing running up to Volmageddon when the VIX ETPs werehaving big impacts).This morning (July 20, as of time of writing), TSLQ reported having $15,674,160. Since the fund is a -1X fund, that means the fund needs a swap this morning before trading begins worth -$15,674,160.Here as I’m typing this, TSLA is up 1.14%. That makes the value of the fund’s swap -$15,852,845. The liability that the swap represents got bigger because TSLA got bigger. If the swap had to settle right this moment, the easiest way to think about this is that cash will now need to go from TSLQ to the swap counterparty just to settle up. So $178,685 leaves, making the new AUM of the fund $15,495,475. Now the fund needs -$15,495,475 in swap exposure going into tomorrow, but it’s still got $15,852,845 sitting in the swap account! So what does it do? It tells the counterpart to lighten up the swap by $357,371. That’s the trade done by the swap counterparty to even out their book at the end of the day.(NOTE: How swaps are technically accounted for on the books and how individual swaps are settled daily is itself a surprisingly complex topic. If you’re an insomniac, I’d start here with anInternational Swaps Dealers Association guide. I point this out to fend off the ‘but Dave!’ I’ll inevitably get because the above skips a dozen book entry steps to get to the rebal-trade number, which is what we really care about. Nothing brings out the truth like being wrong on the internet!)Put another way, on a day that the underlying stock goes up, TSLQ has to be a net buyer, like clockwork. People’s brains break because it doesn’t matter what sign you put on the leverage factor; you’re still a net buyer. Imagine that AXS launched a 1.5X Bull Daily version of this fund. Instead of an inverse swap, the fund just sits on the cash and enters into a 1.5X swap.In this case, the swap went in favor of our imaginary 1.5X Daily Bull, so the NAV of the fund went up, but that again means they have to get more exposure at the end of the day, which is the same as “lightening up” a negative exposure. That’s why we refer to all leveraged and inverse products with scheduled reset periods as “procyclical” — they (through the counterparty hedging) are always buyers on up days and sellers on down days.(None of this is a discovery, for what it’s worth.Pointing out the procyclicality of leveraged products is almost a closet industry in academic finance.)So What, Big Deal?This is a classic case of something that isn’t an issue until it is. With $15 million in assets, there’s absolutely no way TSLQ will influence the pricing of the $23 billion that changes hands of TSLA stock daily. TSLA regularly trades 3–4 million shares in the runup to the close. So we have to imagine a world where either one of these single-stock products absolutely moons or where there becomes a mismatch between the dollars in the ETP complex and the natural volume in the underlying stock. If, for example, TSLQ had 15 billion instead of 15 million, then the above trade would be about a quarter of a million shares into the close — a number that, if you know it’s coming, probably matters, especially if it’s every single day and always in the direction of that day’s performance. One has to imagine it’s exploitable. Mechanical trading nearly always is.For now, we have a handful of products tracking extremely liquid underlying securities with low assets. The sky is most assuredlynotfalling. But imagine if these products existed in several flavors for every stock in the S&P 500? What happens when a stock becomes a meme-darling, and the liquidity flows into the geared products out of proportion to the underlying stock? The analyst believes “sentiment-driven fund flow is the current key share price driver and revenue recovery is the key determinant of market sentiment.”That is a bit of problem, then. Because Yao expects weak China consumption in the September quarter (F2Q23) to impact the revenue outlook.Since late August, Covid has once again been a disruptive force in a host of cities across China, and as such, Yao expects “limited improvement” in Alibaba’s core-core CMR (customer-management revenue) compared to the June quarter.The analyst sees the September quarter’s CMR falling by 4% from the same period last year, hardly any better than the June quarter’s 5% drop. On account of “low visibility of consumer sentiment improvement” or any relaxion of the Covid policies, the decline will continue in the December quarter, albeit at a slower pace (Yao expects a 2% year-over-year decline vs. anticipation of a positive turn previously).In contrast, given Alibaba’s firm commitment to cost-cutting and efficiency-improving measures, Yao sees “potential upside to consensus bottom-line projections.”However, that might not have enough of a positive effect right now. “Alibaba’s weakening revenue outlook in the near term could continue to weigh on the share price despite an unchanged, or even potentially better, profit outlook,” the analyst said, before summing up, “Nonetheless, we believe Alibaba’s share price is attractive on a 12-month view on 1) profit growth recovery to 20%+ in FY2024, 2) current consensus FY2024 PE of only 9x.”To this end, Yao rates BABA shares an Overweight (i.e., Buy) along with a $135 price target. Whether a late October low will be the bottom or a short-term low is yet to be seen, but given how high valuations are, more work will need to be done for the bottom to be put in place.</p><p>It&#39;s All About Rates</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 earnings yield for 2022 minus the 10-Yr real yield is currently 4.56%. Historically, that is at the lower end of the range and associated with market tops, not bottoms. For example, the 4.5% region was visited in December 2016, January 2018, October 2018, and June 2020. The only case that didn&#39;t see a significant decline was in December 2016, when the index consolidated sideways for nearly three months.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cbe9b42330ab57d8cb7fcad9ad287b66\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"249\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Since 2014, the average spread between the S&amp;P 500 current year earnings yields and the 10-Yr real yield has been around 5.2%, with a standard deviation range of 4.87% to 5.57%. Currently, the S&amp;P 500 premium to the 10-yr TIP is more than two standard deviations from the average. The spread would need to rise by 30 bps to get the index back to within one standard deviation, or by 65 bps to return to the historical average.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/716b902ff03171d3d6501fc54cd5e4ff\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"348\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Another 9% Decline?</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 has an earnings yield based on 2022 earnings estimates of 6.17%. An increase of 30 bps would increase the yield to 6.47%, and an increase of 60 bps would increase the yield to 6.77%. The earnings yield is simply the inverse of the PE ratio, which means the current PE ratio is 16.2 and would need to fall to 15.4 or 14.7 to bring the S&amp;P 500 back to a historically average fair value.</p><p>With the earnings estimates for 2022 currently tracking at $224.73, it would value the S&amp;P 500 in a range of 3,460 to 3,300. That would equal a further decline in the index of around 5% to 9%.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/65e039fb8224601f45af66fa8d842e51\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"346\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>What will tell us when this bear market is over is more likely to be interest rates and the dollar index, as these will likely provide a much better signal than other metrics. Because if rates continue to rise, the S&amp;P 500 will need to continue to decline with the pace of rates risings.</p><p>Rate Cuts?</p><p>Typically, the 10-year minus the 2-year spread tells us when the Fed is about to start cutting rates. Typically, when the unemployment starts to run higher, it indicates that the 10-2 year spread will widen, suggesting a rate cut cycle is near.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a37e7dfd2cd888c6f32ea805482bc8b2\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"249\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>In this case, Friday&#39;s job report showed the unemployment rate fell to 3.5% from 3.7% last month and back to its July lows. That leaves the spread between the ten and 2-year Treasury nowhere close to putting in a bottom, and means the Fed is probably nowhere close to finishing its rate hiking cycle.</p><p>If the Fed is nowhere close to finishing its rate hiking cycle, then rates probably aren&#39;t finished rising. However, some investors prefer to avoid these stocks entirely, as the fact that shares are trading at such depressed levels could signal insurmountable headwinds or weak fundamentals.The nature of these investments presents somewhat of a dilemma. How are investors supposed to separate the penny stocks that are ready to take off on an upward trajectory from those set to remain down in the dumps?To help with the due diligence process, we used TipRanks’ database to zero in on only the penny stocks that have received bullish support from the analyst community. We found two that are backed by enough analysts to earn a “Strong Buy” consensus rating. Not to mention each offers up massive upside potential, as some analysts see them climbing to $30, or more.89bio, Inc. (ETNB)The first penny stock we'll look at is 89bio, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on severe diseases of the hepatic and cardio-metabolic systems. In layman’s terms, that’s chronic liver and heart disease. The company has one drug candidate in the development pipeline, but it has apparent applications across a fairly wide spectrum. That candidate, called pegozafermin, is undergoing two clinical trials, one for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH, and one for the treatment of severe hypertriglyceridemia, or SHTG.Pegozafermin operates through the FGF21 pathway. This is an endogenous metabolic hormone tied to energy expenditure and the glucose and lipid metabolism. Acting through the FGF21 function, pegozafermin has potential to become a best-in-class therapeutic agent, with particular efficacy in liver conditions. Pegozafermin has demonstrated clinically meaningful reductions in hepatic fat in patients, as well as reductions in triglyceride levels.The NASH track is more advanced of 89bio’s two ongoing clinical trial programs. The ENLIVEN Phase 2b trial is enrolling patients, with that stage expected to be completed during the third quarter. Topline data from the Phase 2b trial should be ready for release in 1H23. The ENLIVEN trial is targeted to enroll approximately 200 patients.On the SHTG track, pegozafermin is currently the subject of the ENTRIGUE Phase 2 study, which is progressing according to schedule. The company expects to release topline data this month. ENTRIGUE is designed as a proof-of-concept study, with 85 patients enrolled. A successful outcome from this trial will pave the way for a Phase 3 study to be conducted in 2023, post discussions with regulatory authorities.Based on potentially significant clinical catalysts as well as its $3.02 share price, several members of the Street think that now is the right time to pull the trigger.Among the ETNB bulls is SVP analyst Thomas Smith, who writes, \"We continue to expect pegozafermin will demonstrate positive results that could enable a clear line of sight into a streamlined and established regulatory pathway in SHTG. The average price target, among these analysts, is $29.63, suggesting a one-year potential growth of ~878%.Marinus Pharmaceuticals (MRNS)Now we’ll turn to Marinus Pharma, a company laser-focused on the treatment of seizure disorders. Marinus has one drug candidate, ganaxolone, developed in both oral and intravenous infusion versions. The drug was approved by the FDA in March of this year for the treatment of seizures due to cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5 (CDKL5) deficiency. This is a rare form of epilepsy with genetic causation, and appears in early childhood; ganaxolone was approved for patients aged 2 and up in an orally dosed formulation.That FDA approval is the major factor in Marinus’ outlook for now, as it gives the company potential for a revenue take-off. The company’s previous quarterly revenue postings have mostly come from collaboration payments with other drug companies. Now that ganaxolone is scheduled for a commercial launch, under the brand name ZTALMY, in July of this year, Marinus has the opportunity to develop a regular, reliable income stream. The company has already prepped a leadership team for the launch, and has begun putting sales reps in place.On the clinical trial side, Marinus has two Phase 3 studies underway. The RAISE trial is studying ganaxolone as an intravenous infusion for the treatment of refractory status epilepticus – that is, as a ‘big gun’ to treat severe seizures that do not abate – and target sites for the study have been expanded to include the US, Canada, Australia, and Israel. Topline data is expected in 2H23.The company has also begun selecting sites and enrolling patients in TrustTSC, a Phase 3 trial of orally dosed ganaxolone in the treatment of seizures from Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. But Google also owns the wildly popular online video platform YouTube, which is currently tied with <b>Netflix</b> as the top streaming service as measured by viewing time, according to <b>Nielsen</b>.</p><p>Google has used those highly engaging web properties to position itself as a powerbroker in the advertising industry. It collected a stunning 27.5% of global digital ad spend in 2020, and despite tough competition from tech companies like <b>Amazon</b> and <b>Alibaba</b>, Google will still hold 27.5% market share by 2023, according to eMarketer.</p><p>Meanwhile, Google is also gaining share in cloud computing. Google Cloud captured 8% of cloud infrastructure spending in the second quarter of 2022, up from 5% in the second quarter of 2019, according to Canalys. One of the drivers behind that success is its leadership in the data cloud market, which itself stems from expertise in analytics and artificial intelligence.</p><p>Not surprisingly, Alphabet has delivered stellar financial results like clockwork. Revenue climbed 26% to $278.1 billion in the past year, and free cash flow jumped 11% to $65.2 billion. But investors have good reason to believe that momentum will carry into the coming years.</p><p>Looking ahead, eMarketer says global digital ad spend will grow at nearly 10% per year to reach $876 billion by 2026, and Grand View Research estimates cloud computing spend will grow at nearly 16% per year to reach $1.6 trillion by 2030. That puts Alphabet in front of a massive market opportunity, and with shares trading at a reasonable 4.9 times sales -- a discount to the three-year average of 6.8 times sales -- now is a great time to buy this growth stock.</p><h2>Okta: The most comprehensive identity platform</h2><p>Okta specializes in identity and access management (IAM), a branch of cybersecurity that seeks to ensure only the right people can access applications and resources at the appropriate time. Its platform allows administrators to enforce contextual access policies based on factors like identity, device, and location, and it leans on artificial intelligence to measure risk and authenticate users.</p><p>Okta offers the most comprehensive IAM solution on the market, according to management. Its platform features over 7,000 prebuilt integrations that simplify adoption, making it easy for businesses to integrate identity into workforce applications like <b>Microsoft</b> 365 and <b>Salesforce</b>. Its platform also features developer tools -- acquired from Auth0 last year -- that allow businesses to embed identity into customer applications.</p><p>Unfortunately, the Auth0 integration has weighed on Okta&#39;s financial performance. Revenue climbed 57% to $1.6 billion over the past year, but free cash flow fell 81% to $23 million. Management recently addressed that issue by restructuring its product portfolio to simplify its go-to-market strategy. Investors should keep an eye on the situation, paying close attention to management&#39;s commentary regarding adoption of its customer identity cloud in the coming quarters.</p><p>On the other side of its business, Okta recently bolstered its workforce identity cloud with the launch of an identity governance and administration (IGA) product, Okta Identity Governance. That IGA solution simplifies auditing and compliance for customers, and it streamlines identity workflows with automation. Okta Identity Governance is now live in North America, and the global launch is slated for later this year. Also noteworthy, Okta has a privileged access management (PAM) product set to launch a few quarters down the road, further expanding its workforce identity cloud. PAM solutions are focused on securing superuser accounts and other highly privileged accounts.</p><p>Collectively, Okta&#39;s acquisition of Auth0 and its introduction of IGA and PAM solutions brings its total addressable market to $80 billion, leaving a long runway for growth. The data cemented expectations among fed-funds futures traders for a rate hike of at least 75 basis points when the Fed concludes its policy meeting on Sept. 21, with some traders and analysts looking for an increase of 100 basis points, or a full percentage point.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average logged a 4.1% weekly fall, while the S&amp;P 500 dropped 4.8% and the Nasdaq Composite suffered a 5.5% decline. The S&amp;P 500 ended Friday below the 3,900 level viewed as an important area of technical support, with some chart watchers eyeing the potential for a test of the large-cap benchmark’s 2022 low at 3,666.77 set on June 16.</p><p>A profit warning from global shipping giant and economic bellwether FedEx Corp. further stoked recession fears, contributing to stock-market losses on Friday.</p><p>Treasurys also fell, with yield on the 2-year Treasury note soaring to a nearly 15-year high above 3.85% on expectations the Fed will continue pushing rates higher in coming months. Yields rise as prices fall.</p><p>Investors are operating in an environment where the central bank’s need to rein in stubborn inflation is widely seen having eliminated the notion of a figurative “Fed put” on the stock market.</p><p>The concept of a Fed put has been around since at least the October 1987 stock-market crash prompted the Alan Greenspan-led central bank to lower interest rates. An actual put option is a financial derivative that gives the holder the right but not the obligation to sell the underlying asset at a set level, known as the strike price, serving as an insurance policy against a market decline.</p><p>Some economists and analysts have even suggested the Fed should welcome or even aim for market losses, which could serve to tighten financial conditions as investors scale back spending.</p><p>William Dudley, the former president of the New York Fed, argued earlier this year that the central bank won’t get a handle on inflation that’s running near a 40-year high unless they make investors suffer. “It’s hard to know how much the Federal Reserve will need to do to get inflation under control,” wrote Dudley in a Bloomberg column in April. “But one thing is certain: to be effective, it’ll have to inflict more losses on stock and bond investors than it has so far.”</p><p>Some market participants aren’t convinced. Aoifinn Devitt, chief investment officer at Moneta,said the Fed likely sees stock-market volatility as a byproduct of its efforts to tighten monetary policy, not an objective.</p><p>“They recognize that stocks can be collateral damage in a tightening cycle,” but that doesn’t mean that stocks “have to collapse,” Devitt said.</p><p>The Fed, however, is prepared to tolerate seeing markets decline and the economy slow and even tip into recession as it focuses on taming inflation, she said.</p><p>The Federal Reserve held the fed funds target rate at a range of 0% to 0.25% between 2008 and 2015, as it dealt with the financial crisis and its aftermath. The data cemented expectations among fed-funds futures traders for a rate hike of at least 75 basis points when the Fed concludes its policy meeting on Sept. 21, with some traders and analysts looking for an increase of 100 basis points, or a full percentage point.The Dow Jones Industrial Average logged a 4.1% weekly fall, while the S&P 500 dropped 4.8% and the Nasdaq Composite suffered a 5.5% decline. The S&P 500 ended Friday below the 3,900 level viewed as an important area of technical support, with some chart watchers eyeing the potential for a test of the large-cap benchmark’s 2022 low at 3,666.77 set on June 16.A profit warning from global shipping giant and economic bellwether FedEx Corp. further stoked recession fears, contributing to stock-market losses on Friday.Treasurys also fell, with yield on the 2-year Treasury note soaring to a nearly 15-year high above 3.85% on expectations the Fed will continue pushing rates higher in coming months. Yields rise as prices fall.Investors are operating in an environment where the central bank’s need to rein in stubborn inflation is widely seen having eliminated the notion of a figurative “Fed put” on the stock market.The concept of a Fed put has been around since at least the October 1987 stock-market crash prompted the Alan Greenspan-led central bank to lower interest rates. An actual put option is a financial derivative that gives the holder the right but not the obligation to sell the underlying asset at a set level, known as the strike price, serving as an insurance policy against a market decline.Some economists and analysts have even suggested the Fed should welcome or even aim for market losses, which could serve to tighten financial conditions as investors scale back spending.William Dudley, the former president of the New York Fed, argued earlier this year that the central bank won’t get a handle on inflation that’s running near a 40-year high unless they make investors suffer. “It’s hard to know how much the Federal Reserve will need to do to get inflation under control,” wrote Dudley in a Bloomberg column in April. “But one thing is certain: to be effective, it’ll have to inflict more losses on stock and bond investors than it has so far.”Some market participants aren’t convinced. Aoifinn Devitt, chief investment officer at Moneta,said the Fed likely sees stock-market volatility as a byproduct of its efforts to tighten monetary policy, not an objective.“They recognize that stocks can be collateral damage in a tightening cycle,” but that doesn’t mean that stocks “have to collapse,” Devitt said.The Fed, however, is prepared to tolerate seeing markets decline and the economy slow and even tip into recession as it focuses on taming inflation, she said.The Federal Reserve held the fed funds target rate at a range of 0% to 0.25% between 2008 and 2015, as it dealt with the financial crisis and its aftermath. If you&#39;re looking for fantastic long-term passive income plays in this market, three Fool.com contributors think <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TXN\">Texas Instruments</a>, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LOGI\">Logitech International</a>, and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QCOM\">Qualcomm</a> should be on your radar.</p><h2><b>This semiconductor giant has increased its dividend 50-fold over the past 17 years</b></h2><p><b>Billy Duberstein </b><b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TXN\">Texas Instruments</a></b><b>:</b> In this time of uncertainty and rising interest rates, what would investors find attractive in an income-producing asset? Defensive characteristics, a meaningful yield supported by high free cash flow, and the potential to grow through a potential downturn.</p><p>Semiconductor giant Texas Instruments has these characteristics in spades. First, the company has been around since 1930, so it&#39;s a survivor. It also has a really impressive culture and a record of adaptability. Yet even after 92 years, Texas Instruments still grew revenue by 14% year over year last quarter, and its earnings per share rose by 26%. It also has incredibly high margins, with an operating margin exceeding 51% over the past 12 months, and a 68% return on equity. That&#39;s in part due to the company&#39;s competitive advantages in 300mm manufacturing, its deep customer relationships, and broad cross-selling opportunities.</p><p>These super-high profitability metrics have allowed Texas Instruments to grow its free cash flow per share at a 12% annualized rate since 2004, and have allowed management to increase its dividend payouts at an even higher 25% annualized rate over that time. That&#39;s more than a 50-fold increase in the company&#39;s dividend since 2004. At today&#39;s share price, it yields 2.75%. While I don&#39;t expect TI&#39;s payouts to grow by another 50-fold over the next 17 years, I still expect them to grow significantly.</p><p>Texas Instruments produces a very broad set of mission-critical analog and embedded chips for a wide array of customers and industries. As part of its long-term strategy, it has targeted the industrial and automotive segments over the past decade. That&#39;s because industrial machines and automobiles contain more and more semiconductor content with each generation, propelling TI&#39;s long-term growth. Last year, sales for industrial and automotive applications accounted for 62% of its revenue, up from 42% in 2013.</p><p>With booming demand for auto and industrial chips today, Texas Instruments is investing in the future. It has two plants coming online in the near term, its RFAB2 facility in Texas later this year, and its Lehi fab in Utah early next year. Moreover, TI began construction of a giant new four-fab complex in Sherman, Texas, that&#39;s set to come online in 2025. When those facilities are producing, growth should follow -- and high-margin growth at that.</p><p>With a solid yield, a reasonable price-to-earnings ratio in the high teens, and solid growth prospects over at least the next decade, Texas Instruments is a sleep-at-night semiconductor stock that should pay shareholders more in dividends each and every year.</p><h2>Just one check a year, but it&#39;s a generous one</h2><p><b>Anders Bylund </b><b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LOGI\">Logitech International</a></b><b>:</b> Computer accessories maker Logitech International runs an unusual dividend program. Instead of distributing payouts every quarter as most U.S. dividend payers do, this Swiss company issues them just once a year. But those annual checks are juicy, and management has been increasing the payouts every year since 2014.</p><p>Logitech&#39;s payouts have more than quadrupled from $0.23 per share in 2013 to $1.05 per share in September&#39;s pre-announced issue. This year, it&#39;s coming through with a 10% step-up. Shareholders still have to approve the proposed payout at Logitech&#39;s annual meeting earlier that month, but I see no reason why they would reject it.</p><p>It&#39;s true that Logitech&#39;s business is sputtering in 2022. The company has absorbed higher costs for freight transport and rising component prices, along with manufacturing halts due to COVID-19 lockdowns in China. Then again, every company is dealing with those issues now, and Logitech still generated $100 million in operating cash flow during its fiscal 2022 fourth quarter, which ended on March 31. That&#39;s more than enough to keep its dividend payouts rolling -- those amounted to $159 million in fiscal 2022, while its operating cash flows added up to $298 million.</p><p>So Logitech delivers a robust and growing dividend with an effective yield of 1.7% at today&#39;s share price, fully financed by incoming cash flows even during a challenging period. Meanwhile, the stock trades nearly 60% below its 52-week high at a valuation of just 11 times forward earnings estimates. What&#39;s not to love? Buy this stock at a discount, and start collecting those generous dividends as they grow larger year by year.</p><h2>Income and growth from the leader in mobility</h2><p><b>Nicholas Rossolillo </b><b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QCOM\">Qualcomm</a></b><b>: </b>If you&#39;re looking for a semiconductor company that&#39;s well-entrenched in the fabric of the economy, look no further than Qualcomm. Sure, a lot of investors focus on <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">Apple</a></b>&#39;s decision to start developing its own chips, and other tech giants have begun experimenting with in-house designs, too. But there&#39;s good reason why Qualcomm remains so dominant in the mobile chip world. It&#39;s been doing this for decades and has a technological edge over its competitors.</p><p>Of course, a consumer goods-centric business like Qualcomm&#39;s can have issues. Smartphone and tablet sales are highly cyclical, and the company&#39;s booming growth over the last couple of years can be chalked up to a tidal wave of upgrades to 5G network-ready devices. Most of the world has yet to upgrade to devices that use the faster new wireless tech, but eventually, the 5G growth cycle will fade.</p><p>But today&#39;s Qualcomm is not the Qualcomm of the 2010s. Under the leadership of CEO Cristiano Amon and CFO Akash Palkhiwala, it&#39;s charging into new arenas like industrial IoT and the automotive sector. Each of these segments currently accounts for a fairly small portion of its sales. IoT contributed 15% of revenue in the last quarter (including its licensing and royalty business), and automotive was just 3%. However, year over year, IoT sales grew by 61%, and automotive sales rose by 41%.</p><p>Beyond providing it with growth opportunities, many of these new markets carry even higher profit margins for Qualcomm, which should provide a further boost to its already-lucrative operating profit margin of 31% over the last 12 months.</p><p>Qualcomm&#39;s dividend at current share prices yields 2.2%, and it bought back $951 million worth of its stock last quarter alone.
