The company added, without elaborating, that it’s “exploring limited options” for the unused inventory, a move that would apparently fall short of selling the chips. </p><p>The H20 was built specifically for the China market under the old export rules. Because of the chip’s design and limited capabilities, it may be difficult to use in other countries. “It doesn’t really fit anywhere else without a lot of expensive tweaking,” says Arash Azadegan, a professor of supply chain management at Rutgers Business School.  </p><p>This tweaking could involve additional costs for Nvidia. Furthermore, some of the chips may “not meet the performance needs of customers in other regions” or may be engineered “specific to Chinese customer requests or requirements,” says Chad Autry, a University of Tennessee supply chain professor.</p><p>Even if it could sell the chips by cutting their price, Nvidia would risk damaging its image as a seller of top-tier innovation. The company’s new Blackwell GPUs, after all, power cutting-edge AI like OpenAI’s yet-to-be-released GPT-5 model.<strong> </strong>“Nvidia probably doesn’t want to flood the market with discounted chips—it could mess with their pricing, confuse customers, and distract from their big push into the newer Blackwell lineup,” says Azadegan, referencing Blackwell’s used in new products from Amazon’s AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle, among others. </p><p>Nvidia declined to comment beyond what its executives said during the company’s earnings call last week. </p><p>After China-based DeepSeek released its ChatGPT rival in January, major Chinese firms like Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent purchased Nvidia’s H20 chips, Reuters reported in February. These companies have likely developed powerful AI capabilities using H20 chips, so there’s little reason to believe that U.S. companies could not do the same if Nvidia sold H20 to them. </p><p>But Nvidia and U.S.-based customers probably have no interest in this, says Matthew Bryson, a Wedbush Securities managing director who covers Nvidia. “The reason that these products are going to China is because everyone would choose something better.” Bryson explains that the technology underpinning H20s “would never have been made” if not intentionally engineered to prevent Chinese firms from building models similar to U.S.-made advanced AI applications. And if Nvidia sold the chips at a big discount to reflect their U.S. market value, it could “cannibalize” sales of better products, he says. </p><p>Nvidia had initially expected to have to write off $5.5 billion of chip inventory from its balance sheet. But it managed to salvage about $1 billion of H20 inventory by “[reusing] certain materials,” reducing the realized first-quarter writeoff to $4.5 billion, chief financial officer Colette Kress said on last week’s earnings call. </p><p>Unsurprisingly, she noted that as a result of  the Trump Administration’s new export rule, Nvidia will take a revenue hit from Trump’s China ban in the first half of the year. The company booked a $2.5 billion loss in first quarter revenue and predicted a steeper $8 billion revenue loss in the second one. </p><p>The question remains of what happens with this H20 stockpile. Supply chain experts interviewed by <em>Fortune</em> suspect it will be discarded. “These chips will meet the “cool lava lamp” you got from your aunt in a landfill somewhere,” Alan Amling, a professor of supply chain at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business, wrote to <em>Fortune</em> via email. “With so many other growth opportunities, the opportunity cost of repurposing, retesting and requalifying these chips was obviously too high a bar.”</p><p>Because of how quickly the new export rules under Trump took effect, the undeliverable H20 chips are likely sitting in U.S.-friendly places like Taiwan and Hong Kong, said University of Tennessee’s Autry. Taiwan-based TSMC manufactures much of Nvidia’s inventory meant for China-based customers, and Nvidia’s fulfillment partners are in nearby countries. </p><p>Writing off the H20 chips had minimal short-term impact on Nvidia’s otherwise booming business. Nvidia reported first quarter revenue of $44.1 billion (up 69% year-over-year) and $18.8 billion in net income, representing a healthy 42.6% net profit margin. </p><p>Writing down the full value of the chips provides an immediate tax benefit by reducing the company’s taxable income. Depending on Nvidia’s future sales prospects and costs, this benefit could outweigh or come close to the financial benefit of selling the chips at a steep discount.</p><p>“Nvidia is going to be alright; investors of Nvidia are going to be alright,” says Rutgers’ Azadegan. “The real story,” he said, is that Nvidia’s manufacturing partners like TSMC and suppliers, including Samsung and Micron, could be most impacted by the H20 inventory writeoff because they’ve built businesses by serving critical functions in Nvidia’s supply chain. The Wall Street Journal broke the chatter on Saturday; TSMC is eyeing Intel&#39;s foundry business, i.e., its chip-manufacturing one, while Broadcom is interested in Intel&#39;s chip-design business. The catch is that, for starters, no agreement has been reached, so essentially, the market is preemptively (and dangerously) pricing in positives. Then, for the contrarian take, the rumored deal is unlikely to go through due to anti-trust and competitive issues to do with TSMC taking over what was meant to be the U.S.&#39;s sweetheart for bringing chip-making back to U.S. soil and the latter being a Taiwanese company who the current U.S. administration has been hinting at placing export restrictions on and who already has a monopoly over the global foundry market, at 64% in 4Q24. Not to mention the even lower value of Intel&#39;s business if it&#39;s broken apart from its foundry side and all the potential that has been hung to it as a leading manufacturer of advanced nodes. If you take a look at Broadcom and TSMC&#39;s stock movement on Tuesday, it wasn&#39;t positive, with each down ~2% and ~1%, respectively, meaning investors of the two aren&#39;t seeing this as a positive.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/f9845dd00af24e477bc7d47d167fb2b6\" title=\"lksja\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"101\"/><span>lksja</span></p><p>We last refreshed our thoughts on Intel after ex-CEO Pat Gelsinger stepped into retirement; it was the right guy, the wrong time kind of situation. We maintained our buy call on the stock, expecting upside potential from a takeover or breakdown of Intel&#39;s business now that Pat was out of the picture, considering he was the primary pushback against selling the business for parts. We stated:</p><blockquote><p>Intel&#39;s undervaluation, new management, and potential business break up presents a compelling trade opportunity for the first half of 2025, in our opinion.</p></blockquote><p>Now, we believe that moment has come to fruition, and this hype is as good as it&#39;ll get from our current visibility for the stock price performance hitting double-digit percentage on a potential takeover; the stock is up ~22% since our buy call versus the S&amp;P500 up 1%. This is the trade opportunity we were eyeing.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/63d810b5f837f844ff075dda8ec35b2c\" title=\"kldsfjla\" tg-width=\"762\" tg-height=\"101\"/><span>kldsfjla</span></p><p>We&#39;re taking this run-up to downgrade Intel to a strong sell, recommending investors take advantage of the excitement and count their profits. We think the upside from this chatter is limited after Tuesday&#39;s run-up, and more importantly, we think Intel has troubling woes heading into the 2H25.</p><h2 id=\"id_2851917363\">Increased competition = turned-up heat</h2><p>The positive Intel has going for it is, in our opinion, its position within the PC market. So, Intel&#39;s bread and butter (where dollars and dimes are concerned) is Client Computing Group or CCG; this business segment made up approximately 56% of total sales in 4Q24, followed by its Data Center &amp; AI Group, Network and Edge Group and then its Intel Foundry Services, in that order. Now, for Q4, management reported Client Computing Group sales up 9% Q/Q, but for next quarter, 1Q25, management is guiding all its major businesses to see a sequential decline in sales, CCG included. We think this quarter&#39;s Q/Q growth wasn&#39;t due to any real demand recovery, but rather orders placed in anticipation of U.S. import tariffs. Now, this isn&#39;t to say that PC growth will be flat this year, and so Intel won&#39;t see any positives in its CCG sales. Instead, we think PC will actually grow this year due to the Microsoft Windows 10 End of Life, which is set for October, and the refresh cycle that comes with, especially considering a more friendly interest rate environment. The estimate places Qualcomm&#39;s share of the PC market at around 0.8% in 3Q24, but we think this could expand with improvements to software compatibility issues that came up mid-last year. Qualcomm is already setting up Snapdragon X to power Copilot+ PCs or AI PCs and setting for launch early 1H25. Qualcomm&#39;s recent earnings report sheds more light on this, with the company stating that 10% of Windows PC sales within the U.S. are powered by its Snapdragon X chips, which would mean it really did work fast to eat up market share between 3Q and 1Q25. Now, while we don&#39;t think this is entirely accurate to take at face value since the company specified that Windows PC sales that were above $800 had the chip and the average selling price for Windows PCs was $740 in 2024, it does signal the fast-paced nature of the PC market&#39;s competitive landscape. Qualcomm CEO is definitely counting on the company&#39;s share expanding, eyeing 50% share of the Windows PC market by 2029 (which is only around four years away).</p><p>Next, Wall Street&#39;s AI sweetheart, Nvidia, is pressuring Intel&#39;s x86 on the AI server with its ARM-based CPU, but also potentially on the PC front. The company has reportedly been developing its ARM-based consumer PC platform for a while and is set to launch in the 2H25, according to DigiTimes. The platform would rely entirely on Nvidia&#39;s CPU and GPU designs and highlights a big red flag for Intel: Nvidia is after the PC market, too. The consumer PC platform roadmap also collaborates with Mediatek and will launch in September of this year, with a commercial launch in March 2026 (again, not too far away, around a year out). Nvidia, unlike the other competition Intel faces from AMD and Qualcomm, is well positioned to take a stab at this market and come out with a substantial share of it; by well positioned, we&#39;re referring to its supply chain establishment, its own Tegra and Grace CPUs. We think Nvidia&#39;s role here is something we&#39;ll get more light on in the Nvidia GTC 2025 event scheduled for mid-March.</p><p>All in all, we think this goes to say the outlook on the market is positive for PCs in the 2H25, but that is no longer synonymous with positive for Intel. This becomes especially true considering that AI-capable PC shipments are expected to make a larger chunk of total PC shipments in 2025, currently estimated to be at 35%, as shown below, and that these players, namely Nvidia, have a solid foundation to take that share.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/fde2a0863b02efbddb4f109ecefcfe20\" title=\"Canalys\" tg-width=\"900\" tg-height=\"506\"/><span>Canalys</span></p><h2 id=\"id_2842840221\">What to do with the stock?</h2><p>Intel is incredibly cheap, and there is no arguing otherwise. The stock trades at a forward EV/Sales of 2.9x versus the semi peer group average of 7.3x and competitors like Qualcomm at 4.8x, AMD at 7.1x or Nvidia at 27.4x. This is not to mention that, after Tuesday, Intel trades 14-23% above its median and mean price targets, respectively. The survey was done to get a sense of Singaporeans’ attitudes and views towards issues like family, well-being, work and other areas.It found that the young are reporting higher levels of loneliness, and cost of living is top of the list of social issues that Singaporeans are most concerned about.A representative sample of 2,356 Singapore residents were polled between November and December 2023 in three groups: aged 21 to 34, 35 to 49, and 50 to 64.While 70 per cent of the youngest group thought it was not necessary to get married, 58 per cent of the middle group and 50 per cent of the oldest group concurred.And 72 per cent of the youngest group feel it is not necessary to have children in a marriage, compared with 63 per cent in the middle group and 49 per cent in the oldest group.Despite this, 68 per cent of the youngest respondents foresee themselves getting married, and 67 per cent hope to have children.Across all age groups, the top two reasons for not dating or getting married are that they have not met the right person yet and that they prefer to remain single.Younger respondents are more likely to cite having other priorities, such as their job and self-discovery, and a lack of time and energy, as their reasons for not dating, and being deterred from getting married by the cost of doing so.Older respondents are more likely to cite a preference to remain single as their reason for not dating or getting married.High cost and stress emerged as the top reasons for not wanting to have children across all age groups.“(Young people) almost have checkboxes these days before they can consider marriage and parenthood. They want to check off their job, they want the ability to have their own home and a comfortable life, being able to travel twice or three times a year… And then the rest,” said Dr Chew Han Ei, senior research fellow at IPS.The poll also found a gender disparity, where women aged 21 to 49 are more likely than men in the same age group to agree that it is not necessary to get married. Women aged 21 to 34 are also more likely to agree that it is not necessary to have children.IPS senior research fellow Kalpana Vignehsa, who conducted the poll, said: “One reason that (young women) have shared with me for their disinterest or reluctance relates to feeling worried that they will be caught in the double bind of not having equal partnership in terms of running the family.“They talk about watching mothers burn out from being primarily responsible for the visible and invisible labour of running a family on top of full-time employment, and they aren’t convinced that their male counterparts are ready to step into being equal partners at home. They have opened themselves more and more to the idea they could find meaning in alternative paths instead.”Dr Chew said the young worry about the cost of housing, the middle group about the cost of their children’s education, and the oldest group about the cost of necessities like food and healthcare costs.Younger respondents are more likely to report higher levels of social isolation. More than half of them find it easier to talk to people online and feel anxious if they have to interact with others in person. Only three in 10 of those aged 50 to 64 feel the same way.Younger respondents are more likely to hope to see greater mental health support in schools and workplaces.Mental health support ranks third on the list of social issues that younger people care about, while this concern comes in the eighth place for the oldest group, which aligns with how this group has a stronger stigma against mental health, said Dr Chew.“They are at the life stage where they should be making transitions to the workplace, transitions to higher education, and they missed out on a lot of these opportunities during the pandemic. They didn’t go for orientations, they didn’t go for their immersion programmes overseas. And there were no water cooler conversations at the workplace,” he said.On concerns around work, younger respondents surveyed are more worried about their work prospects, such as getting their desired salary, position, benefits and working conditions.Given the opportunity, 55 per cent of young respondents would move overseas to work, compared with 45 per cent of the middle group and 33 per cent of the oldest group.The young feel more prepared for tech disruptions in the workplace, with 53 per cent feeling prepared for the eventual adoption of tech such as generative artificial intelligence, Web3 and blockchain in the workplace, compared with 48 per cent in the middle group and 46 per cent in the oldest group.Younger respondents polled tend to be more civically engaged, compared with their older counterparts. The younger group participate in such activities both online and offline, and feel more empowered to create change.IPS research fellow Wong Chin Yi, who conducted the study with Dr Kalpana, said it was encouraging to see young people involved in civic engagement.“The age range of 21 to 34 is past the age range where we have more mandatory forms of civic engagement in schools.
