Wedbush initiated coverage on the stock with an “outperform” rating, citing strong cryptocurrency adoption. Its shares rose 2% in premarket action.</p>\n<p><b>Cisco Systems&nbsp;</b><b>(CSCO) </b>– Cisco beat estimates by a penny a share, with quarterly earnings of 83 cents per share. The networking equipment maker’s revenue also topped Wall Street forecasts, however Cisco issued weaker-than-expected current-quarter guidance. The company said its profit margins are under pressure from supply chain challenges. Cisco’s shares tumbled 5.6% in premarket trading.</p>\n<p><b>Squarespace&nbsp;</b><b>(SQSP)</b> – Squarespace remains on watch after the website hosting company’s stock fell during its first trading day. Squarespace went public via direct listing, with a reference price of $50 and initial trading at $48, but the value was below where it had been during a private stock sale earlier this year.</p>\n<p><b>Hormel Foods&nbsp;</b><b>(HRL) </b>– Hormel reported quarterly earnings of 42 cents per share, a penny a share above estimates. The food producer's revenue also came in above analysts' projections. The company behind brands like Spam, Dinty Moore and Jennie-O said demand in its various channels remains elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels.</p>\n<p><b>BJ’s Wholesale&nbsp;</b><b>(BJ)</b> – The warehouse retailer reported quarterly earnings of 72 cents per share, 15 cents a share above estimates. Revenue beat estimates as well. The retailer’s comparable-store sales ex-fuel fell by 5%, but that was smaller than the 8.3% drop predicted by analysts who were surveyed by FactSet. BJ’s also said that the rest of 2021 remains difficult to forecast. Its shares sank 4.3% in premarket trading.\nKohl’s (KSS) – Kohl’s shares fell 6% in premarket action, despite beats on both the top and bottom lines for its latest quarter. Kohl’s earned $1.05 per share, compared to a 4 cents a share consensus estimate. Revenue topped forecasts and the retailer also raised its outlook.\nPetco (WOOF) – Petco fell 3.3% in premarket action, after reporting quarterly earnings of 17 cents per share compared to a consensus estimate of 9 cents a share. This week, the stock market can’t seem to find its footing, with the major indexes slumping again Tuesday.</p>\n<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 256.33 points, or 0.8%, the S&amp;P 500 fell 0.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite finished off 0.9%.</p>\n<p>It’s been a while since the stock market had a meaningful drop, and this one may not actually qualify. This was the S&amp;P 500’s largest drop since just March 23, so the current pullback may not be worth getting excited about. Then again, it could be the start of something bigger. Here are four reasons markets fell today.</p>\n<p>Covid Cases are rising globally. The seven-day average hit 628,035 on April 10, up 63% from 384346 on Feb. 28. Global cases have topped 142 million, and India recently reported more than 250,000 cases on its own. The continued spread threatens to overwhelm the positive narrative about vaccines in the U.S. Reports that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the country and that a full lockdown could but put in place has only spooked the market further.</p>\n<p>The vaccine narrative is weakening. The market opened lower this morning, but the drop really accelerated when the European Medicines Agency announced that it had found a possible link to very rare cases of blood clots in users of Johnson &amp; Johnson’s (JNJ) vaccine, and said a warning should be added. That overwhelmed its conclusion that the ‘overall benefit-risk remains positive’ for the vaccine because it could mean fewer people get vaccinated. Even before the latest announcement, confidence was eroding. “It doesn’t seem likely that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is going to completely disappear anytime soon,” JPMorgan strategists concluded in a report released Tuesday. “The lack of a vaccine for those aged under 18 years, the less than 100% take-up of vaccines, the less than 100% efficacy of vaccines and the development of variants mean that the prevalence of infection will remain for a long time, even if at a low level.”</p>\n<p>The reopening narrative is weakening. United Airlines (UAL) earnings were worse than expected. The U.S. State Department put 80% of the world’s nations on a “do not travel” list due to high levels of Covid. And the worst performing stocks are part of the reopening trade. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) closed down 4.4%, American Airlines (AAL) slid 5.5%, Marriott International (MAR) fell 4%, Devon Energy (DVN) slumped 4.8%, and Zions Bancorp (ZION) has tumbled 6.5%. That pretty much says it all right there.</p>\n<p>Investors are questioning the economic recovery. At this point, everyone knows that the economic recovery is going to be strong. When even the International Monetary Fund realizes that’s the case, you know it’s consensus. Now, the market is wrestling with whether growth has peaked or if there’s further acceleration ahead. With little economic data to shift the narrative this week, investors are asking “what have you done for me lately.”</p>\n<p>None of this means a bear market is ahead of us, and just because investors are embracing a narrative, doesn’t mean that’s how the future plays out. It is the future, after all. But the market is always trying to adjust to greater risk after a massive rally. To wit, daily options volumes are up 70% in April, up from YTD lows of $2.4bn on 30-Mar.</p><p><b>In total, across single stocks, $544BN of options are set to expiry today, including $305BN calls.</b>As such, today’s expiry could be important for stocks with large open interest in at-the-money(ATM) options, as market makers delta-hedging their unusually large options portfolios will be active. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others.</p><p>How to trade this?</p><p>As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations where<b>a large amount of open interest is set to expire.</b>In situations where there is a significant amount of expiring open interest in at-the-money strikes (strike prices at or very near the current stockprice), delta-hedging activity can impact the underlying stock’s trading that day. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. This situation is often referred to as a “pin” and can be an ideal situation fora large investor trying to enter/exit a stock position. Alternatively, if delta-hedgers are net short ATM options (have a “negative gamma” position), their hedging activity could exacerbate stock price moves.</p><p>What that means it expiration-related trades may cause trading activity to aggressively pick up for stocks with a significant amount of ATM open interest.</p><p>So to help traders looking to hop on for daytrading opportunities, here is a table identifying possible focus stocks with large ATM open interest expiring today, which is compared to the average daily volume of the underlying stocks. As Goldman puts it, \"<i>expiration-related activity is likely to have more of an impact if the open interest represents a significant percentage of the stock’s volume.\"</i></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0dac61cb87c2f2700d8a0e8e64324f81\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"638\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Finally, for what it's worth, this morning our friends at SpotGamma write that this has been a rather strange OPEX cycle, \"with a consistent almost mechanical bid pushing markets higher. We’ve not seen the Call Wall “breached” this many times before, but there are other aberrations that we’ve mentioned in previous notes – like net put sales. We’ve got some theories on this we are posting in a longer form piece.\"</p><p>According to SG, because implied volatility has now compressed (ie VIX at new lows) there is now more potential for “long term” volatility. Recall how as of late any sharp, violent drop in markets was bought so quickly (see chart below).<b>These bursts lower coincided with record VIX spikes, but a reflective snap-back bid would bring a market recovery of equal force as the VIX&nbsp; (i.e. implied volatility) reversed.</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ae7a60d873792b825bdda669cafa0ed3\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"297\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">And one other curious observation from SpotGamma:</p><blockquote>When implied volatility is very high, its very sensitive to market moves and also signaling that markets are expecting more large moves ahead. As soon as markets would pause or catch a support level, that implied volatility would quickly reverse lower. <b>We often think of this analogy that if a shark stops swimming, it sinks ( partially true!). If the market stops dropping then Implied volatility sinks.</b></blockquote><p>With this, as we often talk about, lower implied volatility (ie lower VIX) signals market makers have to buy back short hedges which fuels rallies. SG's conclusion: this current level of lower implied volatility now gives the market more downside firepower.&nbsp; Starting with a lower implied volatility “slows down” that responsive “snap-back” buying mechanism.&nbsp; It's why, even though we are enjoying a beautiful spring week, Goldman notes that single stock options trading activity is elevated relative to historical levels. To wit, daily options volumes are up 70% in April, up from YTD lows of $2.4bn on 30-Mar.In total, across single stocks, $544BN of options are set to expiry today, including $305BN calls.As such, today’s expiry could be important for stocks with large open interest in at-the-money(ATM) options, as market makers delta-hedging their unusually large options portfolios will be active. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others.How to trade this?As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations wherea large amount of open interest is set to expire.In situations where there is a significant amount of expiring open interest in at-the-money strikes (strike prices at or very near the current stockprice), delta-hedging activity can impact the underlying stock’s trading that day. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. This situation is often referred to as a “pin” and can be an ideal situation fora large investor trying to enter/exit a stock position. Alternatively, if delta-hedgers are net short ATM options (have a “negative gamma” position), their hedging activity could exacerbate stock price moves.What that means it expiration-related trades may cause trading activity to aggressively pick up for stocks with a significant amount of ATM open interest.So to help traders looking to hop on for daytrading opportunities, here is a table identifying possible focus stocks with large ATM open interest expiring today, which is compared to the average daily volume of the underlying stocks. As Goldman puts it, \"expiration-related activity is likely to have more of an impact if the open interest represents a significant percentage of the stock’s volume.\"Finally, for what it's worth, this morning our friends at SpotGamma write that this has been a rather strange OPEX cycle, \"with a consistent almost mechanical bid pushing markets higher. We’ve not seen the Call Wall “breached” this many times before, but there are other aberrations that we’ve mentioned in previous notes – like net put sales. We’ve got some theories on this we are posting in a longer form piece.\"According to SG, because implied volatility has now compressed (ie VIX at new lows) there is now more potential for “long term” volatility. Recall how as of late any sharp, violent drop in markets was bought so quickly (see chart below).These bursts lower coincided with record VIX spikes, but a reflective snap-back bid would bring a market recovery of equal force as the VIX  (i.e. implied volatility) reversed.And one other curious observation from SpotGamma:When implied volatility is very high, its very sensitive to market moves and also signaling that markets are expecting more large moves ahead. As soon as markets would pause or catch a support level, that implied volatility would quickly reverse lower. We often think of this analogy that if a shark stops swimming, it sinks ( partially true!). If the market stops dropping then Implied volatility sinks.With this, as we often talk about, lower implied volatility (ie lower VIX) signals market makers have to buy back short hedges which fuels rallies.
