loads.</p><p>However, the three local banks have benefitted greatly from the surge in interest rates that has lifted their net interest margins (NIMs) and net interest income (NII).</p><p>The trio have all reported record profits during the latest earnings season.</p><p><strong>United Overseas Bank</strong> (SGX: U11), or UOB, started the season with a 35% year-on-year rise in net profit for 2023’s second quarter (2Q 2023) excluding the integration costs from its acquisition of <strong>Citigroup’s </strong>(NYSE: C) consumer banking franchise.</p><p><strong>DBS Group</strong> (SGX: D05) came along and reported a net profit of S$2.6 billion for 2Q 2023, up 45% year on year.</p><p>And finally, <strong>OCBC Ltd</strong> (SGX: O39) was the last to announce its results and impressed with a 34% year-on-year increase in net profit to S$1.7 billion for the quarter.</p><p>With all three banks announcing stellar results, which should investors pick for their portfolio?</p><p>We compare all three blue-chip banks on various metrics to try and figure this out.</p><h2 id=\"id_3278489360\">Financials</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cdc506dff78cf8406d16d98a2046d319\" tg-width=\"793\" tg-height=\"272\"/></p><p>Starting with the financials for each lender, all three banks saw total income shoot up sharply because of higher NII brought about by higher interest rates.</p><p>Consequently, profit before allowances also rose sharply as expenses rose less than total income.</p><p>However, DBS is the leader here as it logged the strongest year-on-year rise in total income.</p><p>Singapore’s largest bank also clocked up the best year-on-year increase in net profit of 44.8%.</p><p><strong>Winner: DBS</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_1377416138\">Net interest margin and loan growth</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/79477a03c1c63aa74fac723d446ed2d5\" tg-width=\"795\" tg-height=\"301\"/></p><p>Next, we look at the banks’ NIMs and the growth of their loan books.</p><p>All three banks saw their loan books shrink year on year as high interest rates begin to bite, causing individuals and businesses to become hesitant to take on more debt.</p><p>DBS saw the worst fall of the three at 2.1% while OCBC experienced the gentlest decline at just 0.3%.</p><p>For NIM, OCBC is the clear winner with the highest NIM of the three at 2.26%.</p><p>However, DBS managed to chalk up the highest increase in its NIM on a year-on-year basis at 0.58 percentage points.</p><p>It was also the only bank to report a quarter-on-quarter increase in NIM, going from 2.12% to 2.16%.</p><p>DBS’ CEO Piyush Gupta also believes there could be more upside to NIMs as 20% of DBS’ commercial book has yet to reprice while the US central bank seems intent on further raising interest rates to combat inflation.</p><p>Despite these trends, OCBC still emerges as the winner with the lowest loan book decline while sporting the highest NIM.</p><p><strong>Winner: OCBC</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_1351176067\">Cost-to-income ratio</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4383cda61f9e7b866e9ca47dd96abe6a\" tg-width=\"802\" tg-height=\"217\"/></p><p>The cost-to-income ratio (CIR) measures the efficiency of a bank’s operations by comparing its operating expenses with its total income.</p><p>A lower CIR is preferred as it means the bank is running more efficiently compared to its peers.</p><p>In this regard, DBS has the lowest CIR of the three at 38.3% but OCBC has come close with a CIR of 38.5%.</p><p>That said, DBS saw its CIR increase by just 0.02 percentage points from 1Q 2023 while OCBC’s CIR jumped 0.14 percentage points.</p><p><strong>Winner: DBS</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_4004408791\">Non-performing loans ratio</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/50c7a3777d878c04c30645388f47b5bb\" tg-width=\"793\" tg-height=\"216\"/></p><p>Now we come to the non-performing loans ratio, or NPL ratio, which measures the proportion of a bank’s loans that may go sour.</p><p>A lower NPL ratio implies that the bank expects less of its loans to go bad and that its borrowers are doing fine.</p><p>Both DBS and OCBC are tied with an NPL ratio of 1.1%.</p><p><strong>Winner: DBS and OCBC (tie)</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_905563927\">Valuation</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2dd81b9e8cde1f6379e5578eefc6e23f\" tg-width=\"797\" tg-height=\"215\"/></p><p>When it comes to valuation, DBS has the highest price-to-book (PB) ratio by far at 1.57 times.</p><p>UOB, on the other hand, is trading just above its book value of S$28.26.</p><p>OCBC remains relatively cheap as well with a PB ratio of 1.15 times.</p><p><strong>Winner: UOB</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_3782561395\">Dividend yield</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ca12364d870d7aab632db81d8cf5cf4e\" tg-width=\"796\" tg-height=\"271\"/></p><p>For dividend yield, we took the trailing 12-month dividend paid out by each lender but excluded any special, one-off dividends.</p><p>Using each bank’s core dividend, OCBC had the highest dividend yield at 6.1% with DBS registering the lowest at 4.9%.</p><p>However, DBS had just upped its quarterly dividend from S$0.42 in 1Q 2023 to S$0.48 in the current quarter.</p><p>Hence, it has an annualised dividend of S$1.92 per share and its forward dividend yield stands at 5.6%.</p><p>Investors should note that with the strong results momentum, all three banks could raise their final dividends when they release their earnings in February 2024.</p><p><strong>Winner: OCBC</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_3148494557\">Get Smart: Considering other factors</h2><p>DBS and OCBC are tied with three winning factors each but investors need to consider other aspects to decide which bank to buy.</p><p>For instance, UOB expects to achieve an annualised revenue uplift of S$1 billion from its Citigroup acquisition and integration for 2023.</p><p>OCBC introduced a refreshed logo and has identified strategic initiatives to garner S$3 billion in For now, Tan is “neutral” on the bank’s stock, with a target price of $12.50 against its June 3 closing price of $12.31. “We view upcoming results could be a re-rating catalyst for OCBC on possible dividend per share (DPS) surprise and further details on the $3 billion cumulative revenue uplift.”</p>\n<p>Tan brings his attention towards OCBC’s “refreshed management committee”, with new heads appointed over the past three years, including at the helm; group chief executive officer Helen Wong joined the bank in February 2020 and took on the top job in April 2021. </p>\n<p>In particular, Tan thinks Jason Moo, who joined in March as CEO of OCBC’s private banking subsidiary Bank of Singapore, “could help catalyse the wealth opportunity in Singapore for OCBC”. </p>\n<p>Moo was previously Julius Baer’s branch manager and head of private banking in Southeast Asia. Prior to Julius Baer, Moo was at Goldman Sachs for over two decades, where he ran the private wealth management franchise for Southeast Asia and Australia, among others.</p>\n<p>Bank of Singapore has tripled its assets under management (AUM) and doubled its revenue since 2013. Now, it aims to grow its AUM to US$145 billion ($195.59 billion) by end-2025 from some US$124 billion currently, while bringing its relationship manager headcount from 400 now to 500 by end-2025. </p>\n<p>In FY2022, OCBC net new money was $25 billion, compared to DBS’s $24 billion, notes Tan. </p>\n<p><strong>The new targets</strong></p>\n<p>OCBC has benefited “significantly” from the enhancement of its franchise value post the acquisition of Wing Hang Bank in 2014, note DBS Group Research analysts Lim Rui Wen and Tabitha Foo. “Greater China continues to be management’s focus as a key market outside Singapore, contributing [approximately] 15% of the group’s income in FY2022.”</p>\n<p>The bank aims to capture rising Asian wealth and support, increasing Mainland China-Hong Hong and Asean-Greater China flows to deepen its regional presence and drive sustainable growth through its One-Group approach, add the DBS analysts in a July 4 note. </p>\n<p>To achieve this, the bank plans to accelerate investment in its transaction banking capabilities in Greater China, investing over $50 million over the next three years and targeting more than 500 regional mandates for cash management over the next five years. </p>\n<p>It also envisages doubling its investment banking revenue in three years and acquiring more than 26,000 new small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) customers in Hong Kong over the next three years. </p>\n<p>In addition, OCBC aspires to better facilitate Chinese clients to operate in Asean, generating a more than 50% increase in revenue from its Greater China franchise in Asean by 2025.</p>\n<p>OCBC is one of the top five foreign players by total assets in Greater China, with $93 billion in assets and a 20% stake in Bank of Ningbo, say Lim and Foo. “Over the past decade, OCBC has made substantial inroads in the region, with Asean currently contributing 60% of its income growth while Greater China revenue saw a 22% CAGR from 2013 to 2022.”</p>\n<p>OCBC has performed well in growing its wealth business, they add, with its Premier Banking and Premier Private Client segments making up 62% of the wealth management fees in 2022 — a 2.5x increase since 2013; and 58% of AUM — a 3.5x increase since 2013.</p>\n<p>Looking ahead, OCBC plans to double the AUM of its Premier Banking and Premier Private Client segments for the Greater China market by 2025 by leveraging its twin hubs of Singapore and Hong Kong.</p>\n<p><strong>‘Limited catalysts for now’</strong></p>\n<p>As the Fed rate comes close to its peak in this cycle, the DBS analysts believe there will be further downside to OCBC’s net interest margins (NIMs), especially as competition for quality loans and pressure from funding costs continues to grow”.</p>\n<p>While OCBC’s 1QF2023 ended March NIM held up well at 2.30%, down 1 basis point q-o-q, management guided that NIM has likely already peaked and will trend downwards for the rest of the year, with FY2023 NIM at around 2.2%.</p>\n<p>Further downside risks and asset quality risks may emerge, add Lim and Foo. Management’s FY2023 loan growth guidance was revised downwards in 1QFY2023 to a “low to mid-single-digit”, from a “mid-single-digit”.</p>\n<p>While asset quality remains benign in 1QFY2023, the DBS analysts believe management will top up general provisions as it guides for a more normalised credit cost of 15 to 20 basis points in FY2023 ended December in a more uncertain environment.</p>\n<p>As such, they maintain “hold” on OCBC with a target price of $13. Combined, the three shipped more than 40,000 units. That’s a monthly record and is one sign that Tesla (TSLA) should post its own big number when it reports fourth delivery figures in coming days.</p><p>About 25% of all Tesla deliveries are generated in China. Investors expect Tesla to report north of 280,000 deliveries worldwide for the fourth quarter.</p><p>Among the Chinese three, XPeng took the December, and 2021, crown reporting 16,000 deliveries, a new monthly record. For all of 2021, XPeng delivered 98,155 vehicles, up 263% compared with 2020.</p><p>Li delivered 14,087 units in December. That’s a monthly record for Li too. For all of 2021, Li delivered 90,491 vehicles, up 177% compared with 2020.</p><p>NIO didn’t set a new monthly record, just missing it by a few hundred units. The company shipped 10,489 vehicles in December. NIO’s monthly delivery record came in November, when it shipped 10,878 units. For the full year, NIO delivered 91,429 vehicles in 2021, up 109% compared with 2020.</p><p>Even though XPeng delivered more cars in 2021, NIO has still delivered the most of the three over the company’s life. NIO has delivered more than 167,000 vehicles life to date. XPeng and Li have delivered about 125,000 and 123,000 vehicle, respectively.</p><p>December vehicle deliveries for all EV producers might have been boosted by a subsidy cut coming for Chinese car buyers in 2022. Buyers rushed to get a slightly better deal. The Chinese purchase subsidy for an EV is about 10,000 Yuan, ($1,500), from 14,400 Yuan ($2,200). The $700 difference amounts to about a 2% price bump for typical EVs.</p><p>Falling subsidies are one factor investors will have to consider regarding Tesla and Chinese EV makers in 2022. But higher December deliveries mean that earnings estimates for NIO, XPeng, Li, and likely Tesla, will rise in coming weeks. More cars than expected means more sales and better bottom line results.</p><p>Strong delivery results might also help shares early in 2022. Shares of Tesla, XPeng and Li had a good to great 2021, gaining 50%, 18% and 11%, respectively. NIO shares struggled, dropping 35% in 2021. The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 27% and 19%, respectively.</p><p>Starting valuation is one reason for NIO stock’s struggles. That’s a monthly record and is one sign that Tesla (TSLA) should post its own big number when it reports fourth delivery figures in coming days.</p><p>About 25% of all Tesla deliveries are generated in China. Investors expect Tesla to report north of 280,000 deliveries worldwide for the fourth quarter.</p><p>Among the Chinese three, XPeng took the December, and 2021, crown reporting 16,000 deliveries, a new monthly record. For all of 2021, XPeng delivered 98,155 vehicles, up 263% compared with 2020.</p><p>Li delivered 14,087 units in December. That’s a monthly record for Li too. For all of 2021, Li delivered 90,491 vehicles, up 177% compared with 2020.</p><p>NIO didn’t set a new monthly record, just missing it by a few hundred units. The company shipped 10,489 vehicles in December. NIO’s monthly delivery record came in November, when it shipped 10,878 units. For the full year, NIO delivered 91,429 vehicles in 2021, up 109% compared with 2020.</p><p>Even though XPeng delivered more cars in 2021, NIO has still delivered the most of the three over the company’s life. NIO has delivered more than 167,000 vehicles life to date. XPeng and Li have delivered about 125,000 and 123,000 vehicle, respectively.</p><p>December vehicle deliveries for all EV producers might have been boosted by a subsidy cut coming for Chinese car buyers in 2022. Buyers rushed to get a slightly better deal. The Chinese purchase subsidy for an EV is about 10,000 Yuan, ($1,500), from 14,400 Yuan ($2,200). The $700 difference amounts to about a 2% price bump for typical EVs.</p><p>Falling subsidies are one factor investors will have to consider regarding Tesla and Chinese EV makers in 2022. But higher December deliveries mean that earnings estimates for NIO, XPeng, Li, and likely Tesla, will rise in coming weeks. More cars than expected means more sales and better bottom line results.</p><p>Strong delivery results might also help shares early in 2022. Shares of Tesla, XPeng and Li had a good to great 2021, gaining 50%, 18% and 11%, respectively. NIO shares struggled, dropping 35% in 2021. The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 27% and 19%, respectively.</p><p>Starting valuation is one reason for NIO stock’s struggles. loads.</p><p>However, the three local banks have benefitted greatly from the surge in interest rates that has lifted their net interest margins (NIMs) and net interest income (NII).</p><p>The trio have all reported record profits during the latest earnings season.</p><p><strong>United Overseas Bank</strong> (SGX: U11), or UOB, started the season with a 35% year-on-year rise in net profit for 2023’s second quarter (2Q 2023) excluding the integration costs from its acquisition of <strong>Citigroup’s </strong>(NYSE: C) consumer banking franchise.</p><p><strong>DBS Group</strong> (SGX: D05) came along and reported a net profit of S$2.6 billion for 2Q 2023, up 45% year on year.</p><p>And finally, <strong>OCBC Ltd</strong> (SGX: O39) was the last to announce its results and impressed with a 34% year-on-year increase in net profit to S$1.7 billion for the quarter.</p><p>With all three banks announcing stellar results, which should investors pick for their portfolio?</p><p>We compare all three blue-chip banks on various metrics to try and figure this out.</p><h2 id=\"id_3278489360\">Financials</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cdc506dff78cf8406d16d98a2046d319\" tg-width=\"793\" tg-height=\"272\"/></p><p>Starting with the financials for each lender, all three banks saw total income shoot up sharply because of higher NII brought about by higher interest rates.</p><p>Consequently, profit before allowances also rose sharply as expenses rose less than total income.</p><p>However, DBS is the leader here as it logged the strongest year-on-year rise in total income.</p><p>Singapore’s largest bank also clocked up the best year-on-year increase in net profit of 44.8%.</p><p><strong>Winner: DBS</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_1377416138\">Net interest margin and loan growth</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/79477a03c1c63aa74fac723d446ed2d5\" tg-width=\"795\" tg-height=\"301\"/></p><p>Next, we look at the banks’ NIMs and the growth of their loan books.</p><p>All three banks saw their loan books shrink year on year as high interest rates begin to bite, causing individuals and businesses to become hesitant to take on more debt.</p><p>DBS saw the worst fall of the three at 2.1% while OCBC experienced the gentlest decline at just 0.3%.</p><p>For NIM, OCBC is the clear winner with the highest NIM of the three at 2.26%.</p><p>However, DBS managed to chalk up the highest increase in its NIM on a year-on-year basis at 0.58 percentage points.</p><p>It was also the only bank to report a quarter-on-quarter increase in NIM, going from 2.12% to 2.16%.</p><p>DBS’ CEO Piyush Gupta also believes there could be more upside to NIMs as 20% of DBS’ commercial book has yet to reprice while the US central bank seems intent on further raising interest rates to combat inflation.</p><p>Despite these trends, OCBC still emerges as the winner with the lowest loan book decline while sporting the highest NIM.</p><p><strong>Winner: OCBC</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_1351176067\">Cost-to-income ratio</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4383cda61f9e7b866e9ca47dd96abe6a\" tg-width=\"802\" tg-height=\"217\"/></p><p>The cost-to-income ratio (CIR) measures the efficiency of a bank’s operations by comparing its operating expenses with its total income.</p><p>A lower CIR is preferred as it means the bank is running more efficiently compared to its peers.</p><p>In this regard, DBS has the lowest CIR of the three at 38.3% but OCBC has come close with a CIR of 38.5%.</p><p>That said, DBS saw its CIR increase by just 0.02 percentage points from 1Q 2023 while OCBC’s CIR jumped 0.14 percentage points.</p><p><strong>Winner: DBS</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_4004408791\">Non-performing loans ratio</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/50c7a3777d878c04c30645388f47b5bb\" tg-width=\"793\" tg-height=\"216\"/></p><p>Now we come to the non-performing loans ratio, or NPL ratio, which measures the proportion of a bank’s loans that may go sour.</p><p>A lower NPL ratio implies that the bank expects less of its loans to go bad and that its borrowers are doing fine.</p><p>Both DBS and OCBC are tied with an NPL ratio of 1.1%.</p><p><strong>Winner: DBS and OCBC (tie)</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_905563927\">Valuation</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2dd81b9e8cde1f6379e5578eefc6e23f\" tg-width=\"797\" tg-height=\"215\"/></p><p>When it comes to valuation, DBS has the highest price-to-book (PB) ratio by far at 1.57 times.</p><p>UOB, on the other hand, is trading just above its book value of S$28.26.</p><p>OCBC remains relatively cheap as well with a PB ratio of 1.15 times.</p><p><strong>Winner: UOB</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_3782561395\">Dividend yield</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ca12364d870d7aab632db81d8cf5cf4e\" tg-width=\"796\" tg-height=\"271\"/></p><p>For dividend yield, we took the trailing 12-month dividend paid out by each lender but excluded any special, one-off dividends.</p><p>Using each bank’s core dividend, OCBC had the highest dividend yield at 6.1% with DBS registering the lowest at 4.9%.</p><p>However, DBS had just upped its quarterly dividend from S$0.42 in 1Q 2023 to S$0.48 in the current quarter.</p><p>Hence, it has an annualised dividend of S$1.92 per share and its forward dividend yield stands at 5.6%.</p><p>Investors should note that with the strong results momentum, all three banks could raise their final dividends when they release their earnings in February 2024.</p><p><strong>Winner: OCBC</strong></p><h2 id=\"id_3148494557\">Get Smart: Considering other factors</h2><p>DBS and OCBC are tied with three winning factors each but investors need to consider other aspects to decide which bank to buy.</p><p>For instance, UOB expects to achieve an annualised revenue uplift of S$1 billion from its Citigroup acquisition and integration for 2023.</p><p>OCBC introduced a refreshed logo and has identified strategic initiatives to garner S$3 billion in debt loads.However, the three local banks have benefitted greatly from the surge in interest rates that has lifted their net interest margins (NIMs) and net interest income (NII).The trio have all reported record profits during the latest earnings season.United Overseas Bank (SGX: U11), or UOB, started the season with a 35% year-on-year rise in net profit for 2023’s second quarter (2Q 2023) excluding the integration costs from its acquisition of Citigroup’s (NYSE: C) consumer banking franchise.DBS Group (SGX: D05) came along and reported a net profit of S$2.6 billion for 2Q 2023, up 45% year on year.And finally, OCBC Ltd (SGX: O39) was the last to announce its results and impressed with a 34% year-on-year increase in net profit to S$1.7 billion for the quarter.With all three banks announcing stellar results, which should investors pick for their portfolio?We compare all three blue-chip banks on various metrics to try and figure this out.FinancialsStarting with the financials for each lender, all three banks saw total income shoot up sharply because of higher NII brought about by higher interest rates.Consequently, profit before allowances also rose sharply as expenses rose less than total income.However, DBS is the leader here as it logged the strongest year-on-year rise in total income.Singapore’s largest bank also clocked up the best year-on-year increase in net profit of 44.8%.Winner: DBSNet interest margin and loan growthNext, we look at the banks’ NIMs and the growth of their loan books.All three banks saw their loan books shrink year on year as high interest rates begin to bite, causing individuals and businesses to become hesitant to take on more debt.DBS saw the worst fall of the three at 2.1% while OCBC experienced the gentlest decline at just 0.3%.For NIM, OCBC is the clear winner with the highest NIM of the three at 2.26%.However, DBS managed to chalk up the highest increase in its NIM on a year-on-year basis at 0.58 percentage points.It was also the only bank to report a quarter-on-quarter increase in NIM, going from 2.12% to 2.16%.DBS’ CEO Piyush Gupta also believes there could be more upside to NIMs as 20% of DBS’ commercial book has yet to reprice while the US central bank seems intent on further raising interest rates to combat inflation.Despite these trends, OCBC still emerges as the winner with the lowest loan book decline while sporting the highest NIM.Winner: OCBCCost-to-income ratioThe cost-to-income ratio (CIR) measures the efficiency of a bank’s operations by comparing its operating expenses with its total income.A lower CIR is preferred as it means the bank is running more efficiently compared to its peers.In this regard, DBS has the lowest CIR of the three at 38.3% but OCBC has come close with a CIR of 38.5%.That said, DBS saw its CIR increase by just 0.02 percentage points from 1Q 2023 while OCBC’s CIR jumped 0.14 percentage points.Winner: DBSNon-performing loans ratioNow we come to the non-performing loans ratio, or NPL ratio, which measures the proportion of a bank’s loans that may go sour.A lower NPL ratio implies that the bank expects less of its loans to go bad and that its borrowers are doing fine.Both DBS and OCBC are tied with an NPL ratio of 1.1%.Winner: DBS and OCBC (tie)ValuationWhen it comes to valuation, DBS has the highest price-to-book (PB) ratio by far at 1.57 times.UOB, on the other hand, is trading just above its book value of S$28.26.OCBC remains relatively cheap as well with a PB ratio of 1.15 times.Winner: UOBDividend yieldFor dividend yield, we took the trailing 12-month dividend paid out by each lender but excluded any special, one-off dividends.Using each bank’s core dividend, OCBC had the highest dividend yield at 6.1% with DBS registering the lowest at 4.9%.However, DBS had just upped its quarterly dividend from S$0.42 in 1Q 2023 to S$0.48 in the current quarter.Hence, it has an annualised dividend of S$1.92 per share and its forward dividend yield stands at 5.6%.Investors should note that with the strong results momentum, all three banks could raise their final dividends when they release their earnings in February 2024.Winner: For now, Tan is “neutral” on the bank’s stock, with a target price of $12.50 against its June 3 closing price of $12.31. “We view upcoming results could be a re-rating catalyst for OCBC on possible dividend per share (DPS) surprise and further details on the $3 billion cumulative revenue uplift.”</p>\n<p>Tan brings his attention towards OCBC’s “refreshed management committee”, with new heads appointed over the past three years, including at the helm; group chief executive officer Helen Wong joined the bank in February 2020 and took on the top job in April 2021. </p>\n<p>In particular, Tan thinks Jason Moo, who joined in March as CEO of OCBC’s private banking subsidiary Bank of Singapore, “could help catalyse the wealth opportunity in Singapore for OCBC”. </p>\n<p>Moo was previously Julius Baer’s branch manager and head of private banking in Southeast Asia. Prior to Julius Baer, Moo was at Goldman Sachs for over two decades, where he ran the private wealth management franchise for Southeast Asia and Australia, among others.</p>\n<p>Bank of Singapore has tripled its assets under management (AUM) and doubled its revenue since 2013. Now, it aims to grow its AUM to US$145 billion ($195.59 billion) by end-2025 from some US$124 billion currently, while bringing its relationship manager headcount from 400 now to 500 by end-2025. </p>\n<p>In FY2022, OCBC net new money was $25 billion, compared to DBS’s $24 billion, notes Tan. </p>\n<p><strong>The new targets</strong></p>\n<p>OCBC has benefited “significantly” from the enhancement of its franchise value post the acquisition of Wing Hang Bank in 2014, note DBS Group Research analysts Lim Rui Wen and Tabitha Foo. “Greater China continues to be management’s focus as a key market outside Singapore, contributing [approximately] 15% of the group’s income in FY2022.”</p>\n<p>The bank aims to capture rising Asian wealth and support, increasing Mainland China-Hong Hong and Asean-Greater China flows to deepen its regional presence and drive sustainable growth through its One-Group approach, add the DBS analysts in a July 4 note. </p>\n<p>To achieve this, the bank plans to accelerate investment in its transaction banking capabilities in Greater China, investing over $50 million over the next three years and targeting more than 500 regional mandates for cash management over the next five years. </p>\n<p>It also envisages doubling its investment banking revenue in three years and acquiring more than 26,000 new small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) customers in Hong Kong over the next three years. </p>\n<p>In addition, OCBC aspires to better facilitate Chinese clients to operate in Asean, generating a more than 50% increase in revenue from its Greater China franchise in Asean by 2025.</p>\n<p>OCBC is one of the top five foreign players by total assets in Greater China, with $93 billion in assets and a 20% stake in Bank of Ningbo, say Lim and Foo. “Over the past decade, OCBC has made substantial inroads in the region, with Asean currently contributing 60% of its income growth while Greater China revenue saw a 22% CAGR from 2013 to 2022.”</p>\n<p>OCBC has performed well in growing its wealth business, they add, with its Premier Banking and Premier Private Client segments making up 62% of the wealth management fees in 2022 — a 2.5x increase since 2013; and 58% of AUM — a 3.5x increase since 2013.</p>\n<p>Looking ahead, OCBC plans to double the AUM of its Premier Banking and Premier Private Client segments for the Greater China market by 2025 by leveraging its twin hubs of Singapore and Hong Kong.</p>\n<p><strong>‘Limited catalysts for now’</strong></p>\n<p>As the Fed rate comes close to its peak in this cycle, the DBS analysts believe there will be further downside to OCBC’s net interest margins (NIMs), especially as competition for quality loans and pressure from funding costs continues to grow”.</p>\n<p>While OCBC’s 1QF2023 ended March NIM held up well at 2.30%, down 1 basis point q-o-q, management guided that NIM has likely already peaked and will trend downwards for the rest of the year, with FY2023 NIM at around 2.2%.</p>\n<p>Further downside risks and asset quality risks may emerge, add Lim and Foo. Management’s FY2023 loan growth guidance was revised downwards in 1QFY2023 to a “low to mid-single-digit”, from a “mid-single-digit”.</p>\n<p>While asset quality remains benign in 1QFY2023, the DBS analysts believe management will top up general provisions as it guides for a more normalised credit cost of 15 to 20 basis points in FY2023 ended December in a more uncertain environment.</p>\n<p>As such, they maintain “hold” on OCBC with a target price of $13. DBS’s target price on OCBC represents a 1x FY2024, below -0.5SD of OCBC’s 12-year forward price-to-book (P/BV) multiple. </p>\n<p>“We believe this is a fair valuation, as we see limited catalysts ahead for OCBC’s share price, given more downside risks arising from NIM, loan growth, a more uncertain macroeconomic environment for non-interest income growth, as well as rising asset quality risks,” write Lim and Foo. “We believe the downside to OCBC’s share price will be supported by its strong provisions buffer of 121% and potential excess capital of $5 billion during FY2023.”</p>\n<p>Shares in OCBC closed 4 cents higher, or 0.32% up, at $12.35 on July 4. </p>\n</body></html>","source":"edge_highlight","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Now, it aims to grow its AUM to US$145 billion ($195.59 billion) by end-2025 from some US$124 billion currently, while bringing its relationship manager headcount from 400 now to 500 by end-2025. \nIn FY2022, OCBC net new money was $25 billion, compared to DBS’s $24 billion, notes Tan. \nThe new targets\nOCBC has benefited “significantly” from the enhancement of its franchise value post the acquisition of Wing Hang Bank in 2014, note DBS Group Research analysts Lim Rui Wen and Tabitha Foo. “Greater China continues to be management’s focus as a key market outside Singapore, contributing [approximately] 15% of the group’s income in FY2022.”\nThe bank aims to capture rising Asian wealth and support, increasing Mainland China-Hong Hong and Asean-Greater China flows to deepen its regional presence and drive sustainable growth through its One-Group approach, add the DBS analysts in a July 4 note. \nTo achieve this, the bank plans to accelerate investment in its transaction banking capabilities in Greater China, investing over $50 million over the next three years and targeting more than 500 regional mandates for cash management over the next five years. \nIt also envisages doubling its investment banking revenue in three years and acquiring more than 26,000 new small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) customers in Hong Kong over the next three years. \nIn addition, OCBC aspires to better facilitate Chinese clients to operate in Asean, generating a more than 50% increase in revenue from its Greater China franchise in Asean by 2025.\nOCBC is one of the top five foreign players by total assets in Greater China, with $93 billion in assets and a 20% stake in Bank of Ningbo, say Lim and Foo. “Over the past decade, OCBC has made substantial inroads in the region, with Asean currently contributing 60% of its income growth while Greater China revenue saw a 22% CAGR from 2013 to 2022.”\nOCBC has performed well in growing its wealth business, they add, with its Premier Banking and Premier Private Client segments making up 62% of the wealth management fees in 2022 — a 2.5x increase since 2013; and 58% of AUM — a 3.5x increase since 2013.\nLooking ahead, OCBC plans to double the AUM of its Premier Banking and Premier Private Client segments for the Greater China market by 2025 by leveraging its twin hubs of Singapore and Hong Kong.\n‘Limited catalysts for now’\nAs the Fed rate comes close to its peak in this cycle, the DBS analysts believe there will be further downside to OCBC’s net interest margins (NIMs), especially as competition for quality loans and pressure from funding costs continues to grow”.\nWhile OCBC’s 1QF2023 ended March NIM held up well at 2.30%, down 1 basis point q-o-q, management guided that NIM has likely already peaked and will trend downwards for the rest of the year, with FY2023 NIM at around 2.2%.\nFurther downside risks and asset quality risks may emerge, add Lim and Foo. Management’s FY2023 loan growth guidance was revised downwards in 1QFY2023 to a “low to mid-single-digit”, from a “mid-single-digit”.\nWhile asset quality remains benign in 1QFY2023, the DBS analysts believe management will top up general provisions as it guides for a more normalised credit cost of 15 to 20 basis points in FY2023 ended December in a more uncertain environment.\nAs such, they maintain “hold” on OCBC with a target price of $13. DBS’s target price on OCBC represents a 1x FY2024, below -0.5SD of OCBC’s 12-year forward price-to-book (P/BV) multiple. \n“We believe this is a fair valuation, as we see limited catalysts ahead for OCBC’s share price, given more downside risks arising from NIM, loan growth, a more uncertain macroeconomic environment for non-interest income growth, as well as rising asset quality risks,” write Lim and Foo. “We believe the downside to OCBC’s share price will be supported by its strong provisions buffer of 121% and potential excess capital of $5 billion during FY2023.”\nShares in OCBC closed 4 cents higher, or 0.32% up, at $12.35 on July
