Er the US market has moved beyond deepseek which isn't really much of a threat to anything. The concern now is tarrifs and slowing economic growth. Thats why the market is moving down. Deepseek used 50,000 NVDA chips so that benefits the US. LLMs are a commodity and the focus should be on how global companies integrate AI into their business models. In other words, US companies stand the gain the most.

Dude DeepSeek was built on OpenAI. Of course it would need less training. Also, it would need roughly 50,000 NVIDIA H100 chips which is pretty basic in order to build the model. Lastly, widespread adoption of AI is the eventual goal for Nvidia's monopoly and to do so AI needs to be more cost-effective (not just the big Tech players playing the game). So yeah, very bullish for Nvidia long term.

Dude. What are you talking about man. NVDA and DeepSeek are not competitors and produce different products and services. DeepSeek threatens the LLMs produced by other hyper scalers like Google Gemini, OpenAi, Llama, etc. If anything you admitted that it actually runs on NVDA chips, and so it needs NVDA. DeepSeek actually strengthen's NVDA's dominance.

Musk's actions to date, show he does not care about money. He stated in several interviews when questioned several times why he would not censor content on twitter that he would rather lose advertising revenue and piss off powerful people in corporate America that give up fighting for the ideals of freedom of speech. Billionaires who have the billions like him are no longer motivated by money. They are motivated by idealistic passions and pursuits like being an interplanetary species. Musk has only ever been authentic, albeit akwardly authentic. People can see that. So this article is indeed bluster.

But the long-term impact is often unclear.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Some of the Republican president’s executive orders are statements of intent or groundwork to achieve what has yet to be done. On Day 1, for example, he declared an energy emergency to spur production. But he’s not promising a payoff until next year, when he told voters to count on a big drop in their utility bills.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Trump’s goals occasionally conflict with each other. He promised both to lower the cost of living and to impose tariffs on foreign goods, which will most likely increase prices. Other issues are languishing.</p><p>Very much unsettled is whether Trump has run up his scorecard lawfully. He has faced lawsuits over some of his actions, meaning much of what he’s done could be undone as cases play out.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Here’s a look at where progress on his promises stands:</p><h2 id=\"id_2397430353\" style=\"text-align: start;\">He promised to be a price-dropper</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Inflation has been falling since a peak of 9.1% in 2022. It was at 3% in January, the month Trump was inaugurated, and 2.4% in March. “We already solved inflation,” Trump boasted. Besides, he made a similar pledge in 2016, and then the national debt ballooned during his first presidency.</p><h2 id=\"id_3311200125\" style=\"text-align: start;\">He’s cracked down on illegal immigration</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Trump has clearly made progress on a signature promise to control the border.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The number of people trying to cross illegally into the U.S. from Mexico dropped steeply in President Joe Biden’s last year, from a high of 249,740 in December 2023 to 47,324 in December 2024. Under Trump, the numbers sank to only 8,346 in February and 7,181 in March.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">It’s unclear whether Trump is matching Biden’s aggressive deportation record last year — the numbers are not yet in.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Meanwhile, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is arresting large numbers of people across the country. Many who assert their innocence have been deported without due process. The case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia is one of those hanging in the balance. He was deported to a Salvadoran prison despite having no criminal record and no hearing into whether he’s a gang member as alleged by the administration.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/a1fc3f0d54ac7fa4b1bdf147570077bc\" tg-width=\"1120\" tg-height=\"672\"/></p><h2 id=\"id_1256218584\" style=\"text-align: start;\">He promised to slash energy bills</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In the campaign, Trump gave voters a pledge they’ll be able to judge for themselves, simply by looking at their utility bills. Trump has shown more tolerance for market chaos than in his first term.</p><h2 id=\"id_3532098611\" style=\"text-align: start;\">He failed to end a war as promised</h2><p>At rally after rally last summer, Trump promised peace between Russia and Ukraine merely by winning the election. “Before I even arrive at the Oval Office, shortly after I win the presidency, I will have the horrible war between Russia and Ukraine settled,” he told a National Guard Association conference in Detroit in August. By then, he’d been making the same vow at least since May. It did not happen.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">At times, he framed the promise differently, saying he would end the war in one day. That day has not come.</p><h2 id=\"id_2994867178\" style=\"text-align: start;\">He promised ambitious tax cuts</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Trump has tested the limits of what he can do by decree, but he’ll need Congress to achieve his promised tax cuts.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">He pledged to eliminate taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security payments and said he will make permanent the expiring tax cuts he enacted during his first term.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">None of this has happened. And with big tariffs kicking in, the tax burden is on track to get worse before it possibly gets better.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">But the president is working with Republicans in Congress to push through legislation. With thin GOP majorities in the House and the Senate, it could prove difficult to get near-unanimous support within the party for what Trump calls a “big, beautiful bill.”</p><h2 id=\"id_3587388497\" style=\"text-align: start;\">He went after pillars of education</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Trump’s threats to choke off billions in tax dollars to institutions of higher learning flow from multiple promises in the campaign — to combat antisemitism on campuses, to take on diversity, equity and inclusion programs and to rid campuses of foreign students he considers hostile to American values.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">After several other prominent schools signaled their willingness to comply with Trump’s demands, Harvard stood firm against the pressure.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In response, Trump has called for withdrawing Harvard’s tax-exempt status, has threatened to block it from enrolling foreign students — more than a quarter of its enrollments — and has frozen more than $2 billion in grants and contracts.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">But such efforts extend far beyond Harvard. The Trump administration is going after other universities as well and at least temporarily ended the legal status of many foreign students at schools across the country.</p><h2 id=\"id_1367992968\" style=\"text-align: start;\">... and pillars of culture</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The president’s promised agenda against “woke” policy swept quickly through the government as DEI programs from the Biden years were halted and references to diversity in federal communications were purged.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">This effort extended deep into cultural institutions and well beyond federal DEI hiring and workplace practices.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">At the Pentagon, in particular, a messy revisionism ensued</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">An executive order from Trump on “restoring truth and sanity to American history” forbade federal money to Smithsonian programs that promote “improper ideology.”</p><h2 id=\"id_471621936\" style=\"text-align: start;\">He promised to roll back transgender rights</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Trump campaigned against the participation of transgender athletes in sports and against broader moves in society, especially in Democratic-led jurisdictions, to accommodate views that gender is not inherently binary. He vowed to take on “transgender craziness.”</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">As president, he has signed executive orders to ban transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s teams. He’s also asked the Supreme Court to rule against lower courts that have blocked his attempt to remove transgender troops from the military.</p><h2 id=\"id_1599069221\" style=\"text-align: start;\">DOGE? ‘I’d love it’</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Last year, Elon Musk pitched Trump on his idea for a Department of Government Efficiency, which would be charged with downsizing the federal bureaucracy. “I’d love it,” Trump replied.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The result was more hands-on than many imagined. Musk started working directly for the administration, bringing along some of his allies. Loyalists spread throughout federal agencies to access sensitive data, question career officials and push for cuts.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The outcome has been mixed. Trump and Musk succeeded in sending shock waves through the bureaucracy and pushing out tens of thousands of employees, with more changes to come. However, significant savings haven’t materialized.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Musk lowered his targeted savings in the cost of government to $150 billion after originally promising at least $1 trillion. It’s unclear if he’ll hit even the smaller goal. DOGE has overstated its results.</p><h2 id=\"id_4054810981\" style=\"text-align: start;\">He promised to pardon Jan. 6 rioters, and he did</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">After a mob of Trump supporters descended on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, he denounced the “heinous attack” and declared he was “outraged by the violence, lawlessness, and mayhem.”</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">His tune soon changed. In the campaign, Trump celebrated the rioters as “patriots” and “hostages” of the justice system and promised, “I will sign their pardons on Day 1.” He did exactly that.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Roughly 1,500 people, including those who attacked police officers, received pardons.</p><h2 id=\"id_1968412086\" style=\"text-align: start;\">He’s gone after environmental protections</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">As part of his promised effort to favor production of oil, natural gas and coal, Trump signed executive orders toward that goal. But there’s less than meets the eye here.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">One order revoked what Trump called a Biden-era “electric vehicle mandate,” but there isn’t one to revoke. He merely turned away from a nonbinding goal by Biden to have EVs make up half of new cars sold</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The order also seeks to end a federal exemption that allows California to phase out the sale of gas-powered cars by 2035. Not only had R1 seemingly come out of nowhere, it was both remarkably innovative and astoundingly cheap. The final “training run” for its predecessor, V3, had cost a mere $6 million, according to DeepSeek—“a joke of a budget,” in the words of former Tesla AI scientist Andrej Karpathy, compared with the tens or hundreds of millions spent on some of its U.S. rivals.</p><p>The impact of the news was enormous: As R1 rocketed to the top of most-popular download lists, Big Tech investors panicked, wiping out over $1 trillion in value from tech stocks like Nvidia and Microsoft. Leaders like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agonized in public and mused about converting to open-source—as DeepSeek had done, making its model publicly available and modifiable, and therefore cheaper to use.</p><p>“A lot of us, including myself, got this wrong, in terms of China’s ability to develop these cutting-edge breakthroughs,” says Jeffrey Ding, assistant professor of political science at George Washington University and author of the ChinAI newsletter.</p><p>U.S. unease has been matched by Chinese glee. DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng got a coveted seat at a February meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and private-sector leaders—alongside luminaries like Alibaba founder Jack Ma and Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei. Major Chinese companies like EV maker BYD and home-appliance maker Midea are rushing to integrate DeepSeek’s model into their own products.</p><p>It’s been a jolt of optimism in a China where pessimism reigned. “DeepSeek could single handedly jump-start the economy in ways the government could never figure out how to do,” says Paul Triolo, technology policy lead at advisory firm DGA–Albright Stonebridge Group.</p><p>But DeepSeek is just one player in a vibrant Chinese AI sector to which many U.S. CEOs have been oblivious. Big Tech companies like Alibaba and ByteDance (the parent of TikTok) are releasing AI models that have beaten Western products on reasoning benchmarks. And a new wave of smaller “AI dragons” are putting China’s cheap and efficient AI to work in the real world, through mobile apps, AI agents, and robots.</p><p>Investors, meanwhile, have rushed back into Chinese tech stocks. The Hang Seng Tech Index, which tracks tech companies listed in Hong Kong, is up 35% year to date—led by stocks like Alibaba; Kuaishou, which created the text-to-video AI model Kling; and SMIC, China’s “national champion” chipmaker, which is helping Huawei make AI chips.</p><p>While investors were taken aback by DeepSeek’s arrival, few longterm observers of China’s economy were surprised. AI could become the latest of many industries in which being a “fast follower” helped the country achieve parity, or even dominance. Chinese solar panels and wind turbines are already powering the world’s transition to renewable energy. Chinese electric vehicles have helped make China the world’s largest car exporter—and even non-Chinese EVs are powered by Chinese batteries. And in areas like drones, robotics, and biotechnology, Chinese companies are global leaders.</p><p>Some Western CEOs are dismissive of these achievements, attributing them to government subsidies, IP theft, smuggling, and export control violations. But the factors that have enabled China to keep up in various technological races have proved to be both durable and powerful: a massive manufacturing base; an eagerness to imitate foreign competitors; a deep pool of talent; and a government that’s able to act as backer and cheerleader.</p><p>China’s innovators may be more focused on “tailor-made problem-solving” rather than the “breakthrough, systemwide thinking” found in the U.S., explains Keyu Jin, an economist and author of <em>The New China Playbook</em>. But that style of targeted, “good enough” innovation enables China to mass-produce technology that can be priced affordably even when, like DeepSeek, it approaches the cutting edge. And as Western business leaders worry about how they’ll foot the bill for AI advances, China could soon be selling what the rest of the world wants.</p><h2 id=\"id_91257358\">A quick rebound</h2><p>As recently as two years ago, China appeared to be doomed to fall far behind in Al. In 2020, Beijing embarked on an extended campaign to curb China’s tech sector, which some political leaders viewed as both too powerful and too irresponsible. A once-steady flow of Chinese tech IPOs dried up as Beijing imposed stricter rules around data privacy.</p><p>OpenAI’s ChatGPT rollout in 2022 made the breadth of the AI gap clearer. Subsequently released Chinese-made LLMs generally performed worse than ChatGPT—even when operating in the Chinese language. Meanwhile, U.S. export controls stopped Chinese companies from acquiring Nvidia’s AI chips, which were key to training and running LLMs.</p><p>Ding points to the fall of 2024 as the time when the narrative shifted. “You started to see the gap closing,” he says, particularly in the open-source space, where “Chinese companies were starting to optimize for smaller-size models that could be trained more efficiently.”</p><p>China’s AI sector, meanwhile, had been hatching waves of new startups. First were the “little dragons,” machine learning and computer vision companies like SenseTime and Megvii that attracted global attention. When energy shifted to generative AI, attention moved to the “AI tigers”—Baichuan, Moonshot, MiniMax, and Zhipu. Now, they’ve been overshadowed by the newest set of “dragons”: six Hangzhou-based startups, including DeepSeek.</p><p>Hangzhou, the home of Alibaba, is the hotbed of China’s AI innovation. “It has the strength of being far away from Beijing to avoid all kinds of bureaucratic procedures; the benefit of being so close to Shanghai to access international capital and talent; and an extremely strong talent pool thanks to Alibaba, NetEase, and others,” explains Grace Shao, founder of Proem, an AI consultancy. Alibaba itself has been a booster of opensource creators: The top 10 LLMs ranked by performance on Hugging Face, an open-source AI community, are trained on Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen models.</p><p>Among the city’s buzzy new dragons are Unitree, whose dancing robots performed at this year’s televised Spring Festival Gala, watched by hundreds of millions of Chinese viewers; Game Science, the studio whose <em>Black Myth: Wukong</em> was one of 2024’s fastest-selling video games; and Manycore, a “spatial intelligence” firm that focuses on 3D rendering.</p><p>How has China’s AI sector managed to catch up so quickly? One reason is that China is, well, really big. Shao notes that DeepSeek’s user base took a major leap when Tencent, operator of the ubiquitous WeChat platform, offered DeepSeek’s LLM to its more than 1 billion users—and immediately made the startup one of the biggest names in China’s AI sector.</p><p>Government plays a key role in determining how to leverage that scale. Through policies, regulations, and subsidies, officials nationwide create a “state-coordinated” innovation system, and the private sector tends to rally around that system’s priorities. The government plays a “cheerleading” role, Triolo says: “When Liang Wenfeng meets with Premier Li Qiang and President Xi Jinping, that’s a signal.” Indeed, that high-level February meeting unleashed China’s DeepSeek hype: First, Chinese telecom companies embraced and promoted its LLMs, then tech and consumer companies followed suit, and then finally local officials.</p><p>Ironically, U.S. export controls on semiconductors may have accelerated China’s innovation. “Money has never been the problem for us; bans on shipments of advanced chips are the problem,” Liang told Chinese media last year. For years China’s chip industry had struggled to get off the ground, as manufacturers could buy better chips from overseas. But the U.S. trade restrictions “mobilized the entire nation to go after the cutting edge,” says Jin, the economist.</p><p>Huawei, the telecom giant, is now at the forefront of China’s advanced-chip supply chain. Its Ascend AI chips—while still not as powerful as Nvidia’s—are being used by startups like DeepSeek for “inference,” or the running of AI models in real-world situations once they’ve been trained.</p><p>The final element is talent: China’s universities are churning out passionate engineers whom AI startups can tap. While some DeepSeek engineers are Western-trained, Triolo notes that “Liang Wenfeng went out and recruited these top people—young people who didn’t have experience in the West, who weren’t trained at MIT and Stanford.” CEOs, he adds, are “blown away by the quality of people coming out of second-, third-, and fourth-tier universities in China. First were the “little dragons,” machine learning and computer vision companies like SenseTime and Megvii that attracted global attention. When energy shifted to generative AI, attention moved to the “AI tigers”—Baichuan, Moonshot, MiniMax, and Zhipu. Now, they’ve been overshadowed by the newest set of “dragons”: six Hangzhou-based startups, including DeepSeek.Hangzhou, the home of Alibaba, is the hotbed of China’s AI innovation. “It has the strength of being far away from Beijing to avoid all kinds of bureaucratic procedures; the benefit of being so close to Shanghai to access international capital and talent; and an extremely strong talent pool thanks to Alibaba, NetEase, and others,” explains Grace Shao, founder of Proem, an AI consultancy. With companies scrambling to win the AI race, Nvidia&#39;s GPUs are the path of least resistance.</p><p>It&#39;s not surprising then that demand for Nvidia&#39;s AI accelerators has exploded. The company&#39;s data center segment generated $18.4 billion of revenue in its latest quarter, a fivefold increase from the prior-year period. Profits are soaring as well. In the recently completed fiscal 2024, Nvidia earned a net income of $32.3 billion of $60.9 billion of revenue.</p><p>Nvidia stock has more than tripled over the past year, pushing up the company&#39;s market capitalization beyond $2 trillion.</p><h2 id=\"id_3889932868\">Shortages don&#39;t last forever</h2><p>&#34;I&#39;ve seen gluts not followed by shortages, but I&#39;ve never seen a shortage not followed by a glut,&#34; says Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who is regarded as an expert on risk. First, insatiable demand and extravagant long-term projections drive a wave of competition. This is what&#39;s happening now. AMD has predicted that the AI chip market will reach $400 billion by 2027. For perspective, global semiconductor sales were just over $500 billion last year.</p><p>Second, future demand inevitably falls short of these wild projections. AI chip demand can still soar in the coming years and miss expectations, given how optimistic industry players have become. What's more, Applied's guidance turned out to be strong as well, fueled by the massive growth in semiconductor investments across the globe as chipmakers are scrambling to meet huge end-market demand.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/36e7c524b510f3ddf875d48fa2f3ac29\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>It's worth noting that Applied Materials stock is now trading at a cheaper valuation than it was before the quarterly report came out, thanks to the terrific earnings growth. Its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is just 23, while the forward earnings multiple of 17 indicates that more bottom-line growth is in the cards. These multiples are lower than the <b>S&amp;P 500 Index</b>'s trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.</p>\n<p>That means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. Let's look at some reasons.</p>\n<h2>Applied Materials is now growing at a blistering pace</h2>\n<p>A $1,000 investment in Applied Materials stock a decade ago would be worth almost $12,000 now:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/81e0104d17e81fcbfbe06af299b88f05\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>AMAT data by YCharts.</span></p>\n<p>However, as the chart above shows, the company's top and bottom lines haven't exactly grown at a blistering pace over the past 10 years. Its revenue just about doubled, while earnings growth hasn't been eye-popping either, considering the pace at which the broader market's bottom line has increased. Also, as the chart indicates, most of Applied Materials' gains arrived in the past year and a half, after it became evident that the company's offerings would remain in hot demand amid a global semiconductor shortage that has disrupted several industries.</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, Applied Materials' revenue and earnings have been growing at a much faster pace when compared to its average annual growth in the past 10 years. The company delivered record quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion in Q3, up 41% year over year. It also clocked a record (adjusted) operating margin of 32.7%, a jump of 6.3 percentage points over the prior year.</p>\n<p>The terrific sales and margin growth led to record adjusted earnings of $1.90 per share, up 79% from the year-ago quarter. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.</p>\n<p>The impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.</p>\n<h2>Sustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar</h2>\n<p>Applied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.</p>\n<p>Within the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to <b>Gartner</b>. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Gartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Spending on semiconductor equipment can keep moving higher in the coming years on the back of a huge jump in chip demand.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials points out that the semiconductor industry took 40 years to achieve its first $200 billion in revenue; from 2000 to 2017, the industry added the next $200 billion. An additional $200 billion of revenue is expected by 2024, over a shorter span of just seven years. What's more, the semiconductor industry's revenue is anticipated to increase a whopping $400 billion from 2025 to 2030, hitting $1 trillion at the end of the forecast period.</p>\n<p>Chipmakers will need to buy new equipment or upgrade their existing setups to cater to this massive increase in semiconductor demand, which will be driven by several verticals including automotive, networking, and industrial. Discussing \"PPACt\" (chip power efficiency, performance, area, cost, and time to market), Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson said on the Q3 earnings call that the company is on track to take advantage of these tailwinds and outperform the broader market:</p>\n<blockquote>\n As we look ahead, we are confident that the strength of longer-term secular trends will drive semiconductor and wafer fab equipment markets structurally higher. And we believe Applied is in the best position to accelerate our customers' PPACt roadmaps, and grow significantly faster than our markets.\n</blockquote>\n<p>All of this indicates that Applied Materials is in a solid position to deliver more upside. Analysts expect the company's earnings to clock a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 25% for the next five years. What's more, Applied's guidance turned out to be strong as well, fueled by the massive growth in semiconductor investments across the globe as chipmakers are scrambling to meet huge end-market demand.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nIt's worth noting that Applied Materials stock is now trading at a cheaper valuation than it was before the quarterly report came out, thanks to the terrific earnings growth. Its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is just 23, while the forward earnings multiple of 17 indicates that more bottom-line growth is in the cards. These multiples are lower than the S&P 500 Index's trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.\nThat means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. Let's look at some reasons.\nApplied Materials is now growing at a blistering pace\nA $1,000 investment in Applied Materials stock a decade ago would be worth almost $12,000 now:\nAMAT data by YCharts.\nHowever, as the chart above shows, the company's top and bottom lines haven't exactly grown at a blistering pace over the past 10 years. Its revenue just about doubled, while earnings growth hasn't been eye-popping either, considering the pace at which the broader market's bottom line has increased. Also, as the chart indicates, most of Applied Materials' gains arrived in the past year and a half, after it became evident that the company's offerings would remain in hot demand amid a global semiconductor shortage that has disrupted several industries.\nNot surprisingly, Applied Materials' revenue and earnings have been growing at a much faster pace when compared to its average annual growth in the past 10 years. The company delivered record quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion in Q3, up 41% year over year. It also clocked a record (adjusted) operating margin of 32.7%, a jump of 6.3 percentage points over the prior year.\nThe terrific sales and margin growth led to record adjusted earnings of $1.90 per share, up 79% from the year-ago quarter. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.\nApplied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.\nThe impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.\nSustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar\nApplied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.\nWithin the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to Gartner. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.\nGartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Spending on semiconductor equipment can keep moving higher in the coming years on the back of a huge jump in chip demand.\nApplied Materials points out that the semiconductor industry took 40 years to achieve its first $200 billion in revenue; from 2000 to 2017, the industry added the next $200 billion. An additional $200 billion of revenue is expected by 2024, over a shorter span of just seven years. What's more, the semiconductor industry's revenue is anticipated to increase a whopping $400 billion from 2025 to 2030, hitting $1 trillion at the end of the forecast period.\nChipmakers will need to buy new equipment or upgrade their existing setups to cater to this massive increase in semiconductor demand, which will be driven by several verticals including automotive, networking, and industrial. Discussing \"PPACt\" (chip power efficiency, performance, area, cost, and time to market), Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson said on the Q3 earnings call that the company is on track to take advantage of these tailwinds and outperform the broader market:\n\n As we look ahead, we are confident that the strength of longer-term secular trends will drive semiconductor and wafer fab equipment markets structurally higher. Consider the personal attention and financial resources that he is pouring into the former president’s campaign. According to <em>The New York Times</em>, Musk has relocated to Pennsylvania to oversee Trump’s ground game there. That is, he’s running the infrastructure that will bring voters to the polls. In service of this cause, he’s imported top talent from his companies, and he reportedly plans on spending $500 million on it. That doesn’t begin to account for the value of Musk’s celebrity shilling, and the way he has turned X into an informal organ of the campaign.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Musk began as a Trump skeptic—a supporter of Ron DeSantis, in fact. Only gradually did he become an avowed, rhapsodic MAGA believer. His attitude toward Trump seems to parallel his view of artificial intelligence. On the one hand, AI might culminate in the destruction of humanity. On the other hand, it’s inevitable, and if harnessed by a brilliant engineer, it has glorious, maybe even salvific potential.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Musk’s public affection for Trump begins, almost certainly, with his savvy understanding of economic interests—namely, his own. Like so many other billionaire exponents of libertarianism, he has turned the government into a spectacular profit center. His company SpaceX relies on contracts with three-letter agencies and the Pentagon. It has subsumed some of NASA’s core functions. Tesla thrives on government tax credits for electric vehicles and subsidies for its network of charging stations. By <em>Politico</em>’s tabulation, both companies have won $15 billion in federal contracts. But that’s just his business plan in beta form. According to <em>The Wall Street Journal</em>, SpaceX is designing a slew of new products with “national security customers in mind.”</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Musk has only begun to tap the pecuniary potential of the government, and Trump is the dream. He rewards loyalists, whether they are foreign leaders who genuflect before him or supplicants who host events at his resorts. Where other presidents might be restrained by norms, Trump shrugs. During his first term, he discovered that his party was never going to punish him for his transgressions.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In the evolving topography of Trumpland, none of his supporters or cronies will have chits to compare with Musk’s. If Trump wins, it will likely be by a narrow margin that can be attributed to turnout. Musk can tout himself as the single variable of success.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">It’s not hard to imagine how the mogul will exploit this alliance. Trump has already announced that he will place him in charge of a government-efficiency commission. Or, in the Trumpian vernacular, Musk will be the “secretary of cost-cutting.” SpaceX is the implied template: Musk will advocate for privatizing the government, outsourcing the affairs of state to nimble entrepreneurs and adroit technologists. That means there will be even more opportunities for his companies to score gargantuan contracts. So when Trump brags that Musk will send a rocket to Mars during his administration, he’s not imagining a reprise of the Apollo program. He’s envisioning cutting SpaceX one of the largest checks that the U.S. government has ever written. He’s talking about making the richest man in the world even richer.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Of course, this could be bluster. But it is entirely consistent with the rest of the right’s program for Trump’s second term, which involves dismantling the federal government—eliminating swaths of the politically neutral civil service and entire Cabinet departments and agencies. It is exactly the kind of sweeping change that suits Musk’s grandiose sense of his own place in human history.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">This isn’t a standard-issue case of oligarchy. It is an apotheosis of the egotism and social Darwinism embedded in Silicon Valley’s pursuit of monopoly—the sense that concentration of power in the hands of geniuses is the most desirable social arrangement. As Peter Thiel once put it, “Competition is for losers.” (He also bluntly admitted, “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.”) In this worldview, restraints on power are for losers, too.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">With his government contracts—and his insider influence—Musk will become further ensconced in the national-security state. Following the example set by Trump, he wouldn’t need to divest himself from his businesses, not even his social-media company. In an administration that brashly disrespects its critics, he wouldn’t need to fear congressional oversight and could brush aside any American who dares to question his role. On the one hand, AI might culminate in the destruction of humanity. On the other hand, it’s inevitable, and if harnessed by a brilliant engineer, it has glorious, maybe even salvific potential.Musk’s public affection for Trump begins, almost certainly, with his savvy understanding of economic interests—namely, his own. Like so many other billionaire exponents of libertarianism, he has turned the government into a spectacular profit center. His company SpaceX relies on contracts with three-letter agencies and the Pentagon. It has subsumed some of NASA’s core functions. Tesla thrives on government tax credits for electric vehicles and subsidies for its network of charging stations. By Politico’s tabulation, both companies have won $15 billion in federal contracts. But that’s just his business plan in beta form. According to The Wall Street Journal, SpaceX is designing a slew of new products with “national security customers in mind.”Musk has only begun to tap the pecuniary potential of the government, and Trump is the dream. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.</p>\n<p>The impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to <b>Gartner</b>. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Gartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Spending on semiconductor equipment can keep moving higher in the coming years on the back of a huge jump in chip demand.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials points out that the semiconductor industry took 40 years to achieve its first $200 billion in revenue; from 2000 to 2017, the industry added the next $200 billion. An additional $200 billion of revenue is expected by 2024, over a shorter span of just seven years. What's more, the semiconductor industry's revenue is anticipated to increase a whopping $400 billion from 2025 to 2030, hitting $1 trillion at the end of the forecast period.</p>\n<p>Chipmakers will need to buy new equipment or upgrade their existing setups to cater to this massive increase in semiconductor demand, which will be driven by several verticals including automotive, networking, and industrial.
