think of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) it's safe to say the word "sports" doesn't necessarily come to mind.

Given Apple's a tech company, that would make sense but also given Apple's penchant for innovation, it also shouldn'tĀ be a real shock either.

This week, Apple made another big deal for its streaming platform and at the same time stands ready to do what it does best ⦠drag others into the future whether they are ready or not.

First, as always, some background.

We know in streaming that content is king, and the latest arms race to secure that content is coming from the world of sports. A number of the streamers have already dived into this space, and it is expected to remain a lucrative field for some time to come.

Apple is no exception. While it entered the fray late, in typical Apple fashion it made its presence felt.

A few months ago, it signed aĀ dealĀ with MLB for a new Friday Night baseball double-header packages that brought games exclusively to Apple TV+. It was presumed to be the first step in a larger play, and this week those presumptions were proven correct.

Apple has swooped in andĀ signedĀ the rights to Major League Soccer (MLS) in a new 10-year deal slated to kick off early next year. The package includes ALL the MLS games and promises to be a one-stop-shop for soccer fans.

There's a lot to unpack there because it's big news on a variety of levels.

At the basic level, it adds soccer to the Apple TV family of content, which paired with baseball continues to see it expand into a market where consumers have interest. With an Apple TV+ subscription bundled into the deal, it also helps (once-again) juice its subscriber count.

And then there is the larger level, that as usual with Apple, will have far-reaching effects.

The MLS deal is not your typical content play. It is not just about getting the games, it's about getting all the games and building what amounts to a new service specifically designed for Major League Soccer - not unlike what MLB, NHL and NBA have for their games. Keep in mind, this would also be a gated-off premium area in the Apple TV app that will be separate from the other Apple TV+ offerings.

Again innovation.

Getting all the games is no small feat as currently the other major sports, which offer similar all-in-one packages through cable/streaming, have blackout restrictions in place. In other words, you can't watch your home market team anywhere but through whatever channel has the broadcast rights in your area.

This new deal bypasses those blackouts.

It's essentially a roadmap for other leagues to follow and eventually ditch the arcane restrictions that have hampered sports for years. Originally, the rules were put in place to help protect key rights owners, but a lot of things have evolved since that point.

This new model makes for a strong package that if you are a fan of MLS, you'll likely consider buying.

Of course, we don't yet know what the cost will be, but Apple did make a point to mention that select (and meaningful) games would also be available for free to Apple TV+ subscribers, which also makes sense.

In either case, it is very clear Apple believes in the popularity of soccer and is looking to associate itself with it for the foreseeable future.

But the company isn't likely done there, and as oneĀ analystĀ put it, "this may just be an appetizer" for Apple.

It's a sentiment seemingly echoed by Wedbush Securities Managing Director Dan Ives who went a little more in-depth in an interview with Yahoo! saying "there's been a clear DNA change within Apple the last 18 months about live sports content."

Backing up that assumption is theĀ beliefĀ that Apple either has made a deal or is close to making a deal with the NFL to take over its Sunday Ticket package of games from DirecTV, also starting in 2023. The package is expected to move to a streamer, and Apple TV would be a natural fit.

If the rumor is true, Sunday Ticket would likely follow this same approach where it would be a pay-walled area separate from Apple TV+ content but have some type of free options.

It would also be a huge win for Apple and further align them to compete in this streaming space. Having three of today's top leagues as partners providing some level of exclusive content and options through your pipeline will continue to help the platform stand out and define itself in a crowded market.

As CNBC put it, these types ofĀ deals"show how strong businesses can grow even in tough times."

Apple's streaming path has long been a mystery that has baffled the industry and its experts. Many have summarized it was everything from a costly flop to a loss leader, when in reality it's always been a value-added play.

Part of that success is because it's open to changes and is trying to be as nimble as possible to keep up with the pack. It is seeing what the market is doing - or in some cases not doing - and pivoting accordingly. For now, that along with a quality over quantity approach seems to be workingā¦even if it just fully decided to fully lean into that direction the other year.

Sports was an area that was always on the peripherals of the company's tentacles but never one many assumed it would splurge to get involved with in a major capacity. Even the MLB deal didn't give clear guidance as it was a very "Apple" deal that dipped its toe in the waters at a modest price ⦠after all it was just two games a week.

This MLS deal is on the opposite end of the spectrum - Apple didn't just test the waters here, it bought the pool!

While not confirmed, many areĀ reportingĀ this was a $2.5 billion deal which is a very un-Apple like move. It is known for not spending big, instead, it just finds workarounds when the price tag gets too high or it finds new ways to make the numbers work in their favor.

This is Apple buying in fully to the concept.

And that should worry others in the space.

Remember when Apple decided to do away with the headphoneĀ jackĀ and consumers basically had to go along with it if they wanted an iPhone. It's the same thing here, just in this case switch out consumers for the industry itself. Despite a short-term pop as the split went into effect, the e-commerce giant has drifted back down towards its 52-week low in recent days.

Worries about inflation and the health of the economy have weighed on AMZN, as well as ongoing tension over unionization. Given this environment, has the stock fallen far enough to become a buy?

After the Split

On June 6, Amazon (AMZN) put a 20-for-1 stock split into effect. The process effectively cut the firm's share price to 1/20th of its previous level -- making AMZN affordable to a new cohort of shareholders.

The move to make the stock accessible to more retail investors initially had the desired effect. The stock rose 2% on June 6, its seventh gain in the previous eight sessions. Shares also recorded their highest finish in more than a month.

These gains were short-lived, however. Deteriorating market sentiment has put pressure on AMZN, amid rising fears about inflation and the prospect that increasing interest rates will eventually trigger a recession.

In intraday trading on Friday, shares have fallen more than 5%. This marked the fourth consecutive day of declines, including a 4% slide during the previous session. All told, shares have dropped nearly 12% since the day after the stock split.

AMZN now trades at about $110 per share, still off a 52-week low of $101.26 reached last month. After the SplitOn June 6, Amazon (AMZN) put a 20-for-1 stock split into effect. All told, shares have dropped nearly 12% since the day after the stock split.AMZN now trades at about $110 per share, still off a 52-week low of $101.26 reached last month. This remains a far cry from the 52-week high of $188.65 reached last summer, as the company benefited from pandemic-induced demand for online shopping.Shares have now fallen about 42% from that peak.Is AMZN a Buy?Even with the declines in 2022, the sentiment on Wall Street remains overwhelmingly positive towards Amazon (AMZN). Itās a ritual that produces pretty regular grumbling, particularly around the ālost hourā in the spring, when clocks are switched ahead from standard time. The Senate on March 15 unanimously approved a switch to permanent daylight saving time. But the history of the issue both in the U.S. and around the world shows that no approach is likely to make everybody happy.1. What is the purpose of daylight saving time?Daylight saving time -- more popularly miscalled ādaylight savings timeā -- moves an hour of sunlight from the early morning, when most people who arenāt farmers are in bed, to the evening, when theyāre more likely to make use of the extended daylight.2. When was DST created? The idea for daylight saving time was said to have originated in the 18th Century; Benjamin FranklinĀ thoughtĀ sleeping late in the summer was a waste of productive time, and that the extra hour of sunlight in the evening would reduce candle consumption. The idea was first adopted as official policy by Germany during World War I, to save energy costs. Other countries followed, including the U.S., which adopted the time change in 1918, although without a uniform national system. In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, which unified daylight saving time across the country -- or most of it. In 2005, the period for daylight saving was expanded to the current schedule, under which it runs from the second weekend in March through the first weekend in November.3. Are some places not on DST?Yes. The 1966 law said that any state could exempt itself. Hawaii opted out of the law, as did Arizona, except for the lands of the Navajo Nation. They chose to stay on standard time year-round instead. Several overseas territories, including American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands also do not observe daylight saving time.4. What does the Senate bill propose? The SenateĀ billĀ would move standard time forward by one hour. If passed by the House and signed into law by President Joe Biden, that would have the effect of making daylight saving time permanent across the country. States would have the option of remaining on current standard time, but no state would be allowed to shift from one kind of time to the other during the course of a year -- they would have one or the other for all 12 months. The Senate bill proposes that the change would take effect in November 2023, a delay meant to give airlines and other businesses time to prepare for schedule changes.5. Ā What would be the benefit?Proponents point to a number of advantages:For one thing, we wouldnāt have to change our clocks twice a year any longer. Beyond the annoyance and confusion that can cause, studies have shown that changing the clock can be detrimental to peopleās health. The āspring forwardā in particular has been found to lead to disruptions in sleep, as well as increased risks ofĀ heart attacks, strokes andĀ car crashes.Economists say that restaurants, retail shops and leisure activity businesses like golf clubs benefit from the extra daylight in the evenings. The National Retail Federation, representing retailers across several countries, strongly supportsĀ daylight saving time. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is also an advocate for DST as an economy booster. According to aĀ reportĀ by the JPMorgan Chase Institute, shoppers spend 3.5% less in retail stores in the month following the end of daylight saving time. One longstanding argument for DST, that it reduces energy costs, has been contradicted by a number of studies -- the extra driving consumers do more than offsets any reduction in lighting expenses.Others say it can possibly helpĀ reduce robberies. One analysis found that theĀ stock marketĀ goes up more during daylight saving months than during standard time, though only by a small amount.6. What are the arguments against the change? The big one: even darker mornings during the winter. That would mean longer hours of darkness for people going to work as well as children heading to school. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has come out against the proposal, saying that the bodyās internal clock fits standard time better. It called for eliminating āspring forward, fall back,ā but by eliminating daylight saving time altogether.7. Has this been tried before?Yes. The U.S. experimented with permanent DST for about 16 months in the 1970s. President Richard Nixon signed the change into law in January 1974, shortly after the upheaval of the 1973 energy crisis, when gas prices soared. The change was dropped before the date for eliminating standard time was reached, after support for the switch fell in the face of dark winter mornings. Russia in 2014Ā reversedĀ a decision to switch to a permanent summer time as its people struggled with prolonged darkness during the winter.8. Which states support this?Starting with Florida in 2018, a number of states have passed laws that would put them on permanent daylight saving time if federal law allows it, including Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Washington. It didn't hurt that, with $128.5 million it box office revenue booked over four days, \"The Batman\" easily delivered \"the most successful opening weekend of all the first installments in theĀ BatmanĀ series of films\" (according to Quartz.com).And yet, by the evening of the Tuesday after this boffo Batman weekend, AMC's share price had fallen a stunning 17% from the share price it enjoyed on the day before the caped crusader's arrival. So did investors simply not get the memo? Are they making a mistake in not realizing that \"The Batman\" has saved the day, and AMC stock is now a \"buy?\"Not necessarily -- at least not according to Barrington's James Goss. The analyst explained that -- with Batman or without him -- AMC stock remains a pretty \"speculative\" investment, and is no sure thing. In Q4, notes Goss, AMC's revenues approached $1.2 billion, and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization were $159.2 million. CEO Adam Aron is being \"diligent\" about keeping costs in check, \"operating at relatively constrained hours... offering fewer showings [to] limit the impact of labor and supply challenges, while maximizing the utilization of the footprint,\" and \"negotiate[ing] with landlords, vendors and creditors [to free] up liquidity,\" the analyst opined.Aron has refinanced AMC's debt to lower interest payments and give the company some measure of \"additional flexibility.\" And he's succeeded in \"limit[ing] cash burn,\" and even managed to generate some positive operating cash flow in Q4. Combined will well-timed sales of stock to raise cash, Aron has amassed $1.5 billion in cash on the company's balance sheet (alongside, admittedly, nearly $10.8 billion in debt). All these steps, admits Goss, have resulted in \"improved... ability to sustain operations despite the challenging financial markets.\" Nevertheless, the company's financial situation remains tenuous, and the best rating Goss can bring himself to give the stock is Market Perform (i.e. Hold) -- without making any promises on the stock's price target. What might AMC do to turn that \"market perform\" rating into a \"market outperform?\" The analyst notes that the CEO has \"outlined a number of initiatives designed to create a more diverse business model beyond its core theatrical exhibition operations.\" The company might, for example, issue co-branded credit cards to create new revenue streams and bolster customer loyalty to AMC. Or it might create its own cryptocurrency. (AMC has already introduced a series of Non Fungible Tokens for sale). AMC might even sell \"AMC branded popcorn\" in grocery stores \"in packaged or microwavable forms.\" (Don't laugh. Goss says that could actually be \"a substantial business.\")As the analyst muses hopefully, \"there is always a possibility that one or more [of these ideas] may gain traction.\" In the meantime, however, investors should probably expect AMC to keep losing money while it seeks such traction. In Goss's estimation, the earliest AMC might conceivably turn profitable again is... 2025.Looking at the consensus breakdown, the bears have it. Based on 3 Holds and 2 Sells received in the last three months, the word on the Street is that AMC is a Moderate Sell. At $9.83, the average price target suggests shares will be changing hands at ~38% discount a year from now.
