almost resembling a political landscape where each side looked at the other with anger and resentment, unable to find common ground," said Liz Young, head of investment strategy at SoFi, in a Thursday note. "Understandably so, given the plethora of conflicting data -- not the least of which is the unexpectedly feverish stock-market rally in the face of leading economic indicators and bond market signals that are clearly waving a red flag."

U.S. stocks extended the rally this week after encouraging inflation readings bolstered the chances that an end to the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes might be in sight, while odds of a soft landing, in which inflation returns to close to the central bank's 2% target without a recession, are improving.

The S&P 500 on Thursday cleared the 4,500 mark for the first time since April 2022 while rising to a fresh 15-month high. For the week, it has risen 2.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite has advanced 3.2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 2.3%, according to FactSet data.

Market analysts told MarketWatch that the debate between bulls and bears will not cease and the sentiment will not turn "full-on bullish" until uncertainties around monetary policy, economic indicators and Treasury yield-curve inversions are resolved.

"We've still got a monetary tightening cycle that may or may not be done yet. We've got leading economic indicators that are flashing contraction -- there's a lot of different signals out there, including yield-curve inversions, that are still saying we are not out of the woods," Young said in a follow-up interview on Friday. "The debate will continue and I happen to be on the more cautious side of this, particularly with valuations at this level."

"This means that for now, markets are likely to take two steps forward, one step back, unless an event comes along to turn investor sentiment negative again, like most of last year," said Melissa Brown, managing director of applied research at Qontigo.

The surge in valuation of megacap technology stocks including Nvidia Corp. $(NVDA)$, Meta Platforms $(META)$, Alphabet Inc. $(GOOGL)$, has pushed the S&P 500 more than 17% higher so far this year amid the growing optimism surrounding artificial intelligence (AI). However, there is a risk that investors are paying "inflated valuation" for a stock based on AI enthusiasm, but if they do not get the "gratification" from it in the next 12 months, the valuation may not look attractive any more, said Young.

"When you buy stocks, you typically buy them on a forward 12-month earnings expectation basis, and although AI may very well be a completely transformative theme that ripples through different industries, it's probably not going to change it [technology landscape] entirely by the end of this year," she said. "So what could go wrong is the timeframe expectation."

Brown of Qontigo also pointed to the current volatility in the stock market, which has fallen substantially since late March when the concerns about the banking sector dissipated after the sudden collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. The CBOE Volatility Index was at 13.31 on Friday, after recently dropping to its lowest level in more than three years. In general, a VIX reading below 20 suggests a perceived low-risk environment, while a reading above 20 is indicative of a period of higher volatility.

However, Brown said her models show that there is an increasingly wide gap between a fundamental model -- which analyzes market volatility based on macroeconomic conditions -- and a statistical model -- which lets the data tell where the volatility is.

"The statistical model forecasts much higher risk than the fundamental model and this is the first time this has happened in at least six years and probably longer. So what that tells us is that there's volatility lurking somewhere... it is bubbling under the surface," Brown told MarketWatch via phone on Friday.

Looming lack of liquidity is another large concern as investors are now "significantly overbought" relative to liquidity, especially among megacap growth stocks, said Raheel Siddiqui, senior research analyst of global equity research at Neuberger Berman.

Siddiqui, said in his third-quarter equity-market outlook, that investor euphoria tends to evaporate as liquidity dries up, which is expected to happen soon thanks to a potentially historic withdrawal in coming weeks. He was referring to the Fed's plan to shrink its balance sheet each month, otherwise known as quantitative tightening, the Treasury's issuing of new debt to replenish the Treasury General Account after Congress raised the debt-ceiling, and the European Central Bank's plan to pull EUR477 billion in TLTRO financing out of the banking system.

"In our view, this could spell bad news for equities in the near term," said Siddiqui.

Stock-market optimism decreased but remains above average for the sixth consecutive week in the latest American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) Sentiment Survey. Neutral sentiment and bearish sentiment both increased in the week to Wednesday.

However, Young at SoFi said there has been a significant "flip-flop" from investors who were bearish and persistently bearish and have moved over into a bull camp. "Although the absolute level of bulls vs. bears in the chart doesn't appear to be at extremes, the almost instantaneous reversal in the two is quite extreme," she said (see chart below).

"Generally, large and swift moves can be followed by large and swift moves back in the other direction as markets and investors attempt to settle on some sort of middle ground," Young said.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The U.S. Stock-Market Rally Seems Unstoppable, so Why Does Bearishness Still Persist
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThe U.S. Stock-Market Rally Seems Unstoppable, so Why Does Bearishness Still Persist\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2023-07-16 14:16
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

The U.S. stock-market rally that marked the first half of 2023 continues into the second half, leaving bullish investors clinging to the optimism that has helped the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 index advance by 42% for the year to date, while bears are trying to time the point when momentum fizzles out and the trend shifts to the downside.

The dichotomy between the so-called stock-market bulls -- who are optimistic and buy shares in the hope that stock prices will rise -- and bears -- who believe that the market is headed downward and may attempt to profit from a decline in stocks -- has grown wider.

"[It's] almost resembling a political landscape where each side looked at the other with anger and resentment, unable to find common ground," said Liz Young, head of investment strategy at SoFi, in a Thursday note. For the week, it has risen 2.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite has advanced 3.2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 2.3%, according to FactSet data.Market analysts told MarketWatch that the debate between bulls and bears will not cease and the sentiment will not turn \"full-on bullish\" until uncertainties around monetary policy, economic indicators and Treasury yield-curve inversions are resolved.\"We've still got a monetary tightening cycle that may or may not be done yet. We've got leading economic indicators that are flashing contraction -- there's a lot of different signals out there, including yield-curve inversions, that are still saying we are not out of the woods,\" Young said in a follow-up interview on Friday. \"The debate will continue and I happen to be on the more cautious side of this, particularly with valuations at this level.\"\"This means that for now, markets are likely to take two steps forward, one step back, unless an event comes along to turn investor sentiment negative again, like most of last year,\" said Melissa Brown, managing director of applied research at Qontigo. However, there is a risk that investors are paying \"inflated valuation\" for a stock based on AI enthusiasm, but if they do not get the \"gratification\" from it in the next 12 months, the valuation may not look attractive any more, said Young.\"When you buy stocks, you typically buy them on a forward 12-month earnings expectation basis, and although AI may very well be a completely transformative theme that ripples through different industries, it's probably not going to change it [technology landscape] entirely by the end of this year,\" she said. \"So what could go wrong is the timeframe expectation.\"Brown of Qontigo also pointed to the current volatility in the stock market, which has fallen substantially since late March when the concerns about the banking sector dissipated after the sudden collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. The CBOE Volatility Index was at 13.31 on Friday, after recently dropping to its lowest level in more than three years. In general, a VIX reading below 20 suggests a perceived low-risk environment, while a reading above 20 is indicative of a period of higher volatility. However, Brown said her models show that there is an increasingly wide gap between a fundamental model -- which analyzes market volatility based on macroeconomic conditions -- and a statistical model -- which lets the data tell where the volatility is.\"The statistical model forecasts much higher risk than the fundamental model and this is the first time this has happened in at least six years and probably longer. So what that tells us is that there's volatility lurking somewhere... it is bubbling under the surface,\" Brown told MarketWatch via phone on Friday.Looming lack of liquidity is another large concern as investors are now \"significantly overbought\" relative to liquidity, especially among megacap growth stocks, said Raheel Siddiqui, senior research analyst of global equity research at Neuberger Berman.Siddiqui, said in his third-quarter equity-market outlook, that investor euphoria tends to evaporate as liquidity dries up, which is expected to happen soon thanks to a potentially historic withdrawal in coming weeks. He was referring to the Fed's plan to shrink its balance sheet each month, otherwise known as quantitative tightening, the Treasury's issuing of new debt to replenish the Treasury General Account after Congress raised the debt-ceiling, and the European Central Bank's plan to pull EUR477 billion in TLTRO financing out of the banking system.\"In our view, this could spell bad news for equities in the near term,\" said Siddiqui.Stock-market optimism decreased but remains above average for the sixth consecutive week in the latest American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) Sentiment Survey. Neutral sentiment and bearish sentiment both increased in the week to Wednesday. However, Young at SoFi said there has been a significant \"flip-flop\" from investors who were bearish and persistently bearish and have moved over into a bull camp. \"Although the absolute level of bulls vs. bears in the chart doesn't appear to be at extremes, the almost instantaneous reversal in the two is quite extreme,\" she said (see chart below).\"Generally, large and swift moves can be followed by large and swift moves back in the other direction as markets and investors attempt to settle on some sort of middle ground,\" Young said.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".SPX":1.1,".DJI":1.1,".IXIC":1.1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1162,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":195472086753448,"gmtCreate":1688760220534,"gmtModify":1688760732468,"author":{"id":"4151785433496472","authorId":"4151785433496472","name":"david22","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4c9f0d3fe04602edddc4bf29d0cee870","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4151785433496472","idStr":"4151785433496472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I don't expect to get rich off coins alone.","listText":"I don't expect to get rich off coins alone.","text":"I don't expect to get rich off coins alone.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/195472086753448","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1036,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":195263734169720,"gmtCreate":1688697409329,"gmtModify":1688697882859,"author":{"id":"4151785433496472","authorId":"4151785433496472","name":"david22","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4c9f0d3fe04602edddc4bf29d0cee870","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4151785433496472","idStr":"4151785433496472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hi","listText":"Hi","text":"Hi","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/195263734169720","repostId":"2349360741","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2349360741","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1688696943,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2349360741?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-07-07 10:29","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Elon Musk Believes Tesla Will Have \"Level 4 Or 5\" Self-Driving This Year – What Does That Mean?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2349360741","media":"Electrek","summary":"Elon Musk has again decided to share a timeline about Tesla’s self-driving effort – again claiming it will achieve “full self-driving” by the end of the year.","content":"
\n
Elon Musk has again decided to share a timeline about Tesla’s self-driving effort – again claiming it will achieve “full self-driving” by the end of the year. But this time, the CEO has mentioned “...
\n\nSource Link\n\n
\n","source":"electrek_highlight","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; However, it’s not clear if he knows what that means.Over the years, Musk has claimed that Tesla was on the verge of achieving “full self-driving capability” so often that it is hard to believe him now. It’s not only hard to believe, but it’s also even hard to understand what the actual goal is at this point.Tesla’s original promise was quite clear: Every car sold since 2016 will be able to drive entirely by itself at a level safer than humans through software updates in the future. At times, “level 5 SAE” autonomy was mentioned by Musk, along with the ability to “go to sleep” while the car drives you around. But since Tesla released its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta, these previously clear goals have become more vague and disappointing.Tesla started using terms like “feature complete” and “capable of driving at a level safer than humans” with FSD Beta. However, it has become less clear how Tesla plans to get the FSD out of beta and into a product that can actually be useful, like a robot taxi service. It looks like Tesla has softened its language after missing its goal and timeline a few times, and Musk had mostly stopped making clear timeline predictions until recently. In the last few months, he mentioned a few times that he believes Tesla will achieve “full autonomy by the end of the year” – though he remained vague about what form it will take.New Musk comments on Tesla achieving self-drivingIn a recent comment about Tesla’s self-driving effort at an AI conference in China, the CEO has used new language that makes things a bit more interesting:In terms of where Tesla is at this stage, I think we are very close to achieving full self-driving without human supervision. This is only speculation, but I think we’ll achieve full self-driving, maybe what you would call four or five, I think later this year. The important terms here are “without human supervision” and “four or five” – although, for the latter, Musk doesn’t seem to know what he is talking about. The driving automation “levels” are based on the SAE standards, which this chart summarizes well:Image: SAE InternationalThe most significant aspect of the jump from level 2 to level 3 is that the responsibility falls with the system (not the driver) starting from level 3 and up.Meanwhile, the major difference between levels 4 and 5 is that the latter is supposed to be able to drive in “any condition anywhere.”Electrek’s TakeThe fact that Elon casually says “4 or 5” is maddening to me. It’s such a massive difference, and he should know better than keep talking about level 5.Technically, that’s what he promised before, but I think it’s clearly unachievable with current hardware. You just need to try to use Autopilot in the snow and even heavy rain to see that you often get “weather alerts” about the sensors being covered, and the system requires you to take over.Even level 4 is questionable, as FSD Beta often asks drivers to take over in seemingly good conditions. I can see level 3 happening for Tesla, but the company somehow doesn’t seem to be interested in that.We are already halfway through the year. Elon’s timeline is literally a few months away. I can’t believe it can confidently keep claiming this is happening.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":539,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":195260240302328,"gmtCreate":1688696780915,"gmtModify":1688696876979,"author":{"id":"4151785433496472","authorId":"4151785433496472","name":"david22","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4c9f0d3fe04602edddc4bf29d0cee870","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4151785433496472","idStr":"4151785433496472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ ","listText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ ","text":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/195260240302328","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":559,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":297282960437504,"gmtCreate":1713607621215,"gmtModify":1713607625142,"author":{"id":"4151785433496472","authorId":"4151785433496472","name":"david22","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4c9f0d3fe04602edddc4bf29d0cee870","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4151785433496472","idStr":"4151785433496472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"What about the Tesla 2 model? However, it’s not clear if he knows what that means.Over the years, Musk has claimed that Tesla was on the verge of achieving “full self-driving capability” so often that it is hard to believe him now. I can’t believe it can confidently keep claiming this is happening.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":539,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":195260240302328,"gmtCreate":1688696780915,"gmtModify":1688696876979,"author":{"id":"4151785433496472","authorId":"4151785433496472","name":"david22","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4c9f0d3fe04602edddc4bf29d0cee870","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4151785433496472","idStr":"4151785433496472"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ ","listText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ ","text":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/195260240302328","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":559,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":503881719734952,"gmtCreate":1764041309998,"gmtModify":1764041313818,"author":{"id":"4151785433496472","authorId":"4151785433496472","name":"david22","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4c9f0d3fe04602edddc4bf29d0cee870","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4151785433496472","idStr":"4151785433496472"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"Ill keep shares until I make it.","listText":"Ill keep shares until I make it.","text":"Ill keep shares until I make it.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/503881719734952","repostId":"2585903450","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2585903450","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Dow Jones publishes the world’s most trusted business news and financial information in a variety of media.","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Dow Jones","id":"106","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/150f88aa4d182df19190059f4a365e99"},"pubTimestamp":1763979036,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2585903450?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2025-11-24 18:10","market":"hk","language":"en","title":"Tesla Has an AI Chip Business, Too, Musk Says. Ultimately, Musk plans to monetize Tesla's chip expertise via self-driving cars and humanoid robots.

"These chips will profoundly change the world in positive ways, saving millions of lives due to safer driving and providing advanced medical care to all people via Optimus," added Musk, while putting in a plug to recruit more AI talent to his company. marked the first half of 2023 continues into the second half, leaving bullish investors clinging to the optimism that has helped the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 index advance by 42% for the year to date, while bears are trying to time the point when momentum fizzles out and the trend shifts to the downside.
