Tesla Motors (TSLA.US) and Mercedes-Benz have become the first foreign companies registered as generative artificial intelligence (AI) service providers in China. This development allows both automakers to register their AI assistants in China for responding to customer service inquiries.
China introduced a registration system for generative AI services in April 2024, requiring providers to obtain government approval before offering such technology to consumers. The regulatory process includes technical reviews and compliance with local cybersecurity and data standards to ensure AI models meet national requirements before deployment.
Tesla Motors' voice assistant system in the Chinese market utilizes AI models from DeepSeek and ByteDance, providing in-car voice recognition, navigation, and music control functions. The company’s Shanghai-based xBot AI service is expected to align closely with Chinese users' expectations for smart vehicle features.
Mercedes-Benz plans to integrate a virtual assistant powered by Skylark AI, a subsidiary of TikTok, into its newly launched all-electric CLA model in China. The assistant supports voice interaction, intelligent navigation, and advanced cabin control. The automaker anticipates serving over 70,000 vehicles annually by 2026.
The new CLA model is equipped with Mercedes-Benz’s latest human-machine interaction system, designed to deliver a more personalized and intuitive in-car experience. Additionally, Volvo Cars, owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, has also secured approval to legally use generative AI services.
