Closing Bell | U.S. Markets Decline, NVIDIA Drops 2.98% Amid AI Chip Export Restrictions, Constellation Energy Surges 25.16%

Market Watcher01-11

On January 10, 2025, U.S. stock markets closed lower, with the Dow Jones, NASDAQ, and S&P 500 all declining by 1.63%, 1.63%, and 1.54%, respectively. The market was weighed down by significant losses in semiconductor and technology stocks, while select energy and retail stocks showed resilience.

In sector performance, semiconductor stocks faced notable pressure. NVIDIA dropped 2.98% after reports surfaced that the Biden administration plans to tighten export restrictions on AI chips, potentially limiting exports to most countries and banning them entirely for certain nations. This news also impacted Advanced Micro Devices, which fell 4.77% as Mizuho Securities cut its price target to $160 per share while maintaining an "Outperform" rating. Intel declined 3.67% following a similar price target reduction by Mizuho to $21 per share.

Energy stocks saw a standout performance. Constellation Energy Corp surged 25.16% after announcing its acquisition of Calpine Corp in a $26.6 billion cash-and-stock deal. The acquisition is expected to position Constellation as the largest clean energy provider in the U.S., combining nuclear, natural gas, and geothermal energy assets.

Retail stocks also showed strength. Wal-Mart rose 1.31% after Wells Fargo raised its price target to $100 per share, maintaining an "Overweight" rating. Costco gained 1.03%, reflecting positive sentiment in the retail sector.

In contrast, technology and streaming stocks struggled. Netflix dropped 4.26% after JP Morgan reduced its price target to $1,000 per share, citing challenges in the competitive streaming landscape. Walt Disney fell 1.01% following the announcement that Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery would discontinue their joint streaming venture, Venu Sports, to focus on existing products.

Overall, the market reflected investor concerns over regulatory risks in the semiconductor sector and mixed performance across other industries.
