Intel to Launch Lower-Cost AI Chip Using Cheaper Memory and Air Cooling by Year-End

Tiger Newspress06-01

Intel plans to launch an AI chip by year-end that uses cheaper memory and air-cooling technology than comparable NVIDIA and AMD products, the Financial Times reports. Kevork Kechichian, head of Intel’s data center group, said the company is "starting from the ground up."

Intel shares rose 2% on the news.

The new "Crescent Island" GPU is aimed at accelerating inference workloads rather than model training. The move is Intel’s first push into the lucrative AI infrastructure market under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took over last year after Pat Gelsinger was removed amid market concern over his turnaround strategy.
