Broad Market Indicators
Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV rose, and actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) added 1%.
US equity indexes rose in midday trading on Thursday as quarterly results from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) lifted technology names, while earnings from mega-cap banks boosted financials.
Energy
IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each lost 0.2%.
Technology
The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was up 1.5%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were higher as well.
The State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) climbed 1.6%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) rose 3.5%.
Financial
The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) added 0.7%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) advanced 1.9%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), was down 2.2%.
Commodities
Crude oil fell 4.8%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) shed 1.9%. Natural gas declined 1.9%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) rose 0.8%.
Gold on Comex was down 0.4%, and the State Street SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) lost 0.4%. Silver gained 0.2%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) dipped 1.8%.
Consumer
The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was 0.2% higher. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) rose as well.
The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) gained 0.4%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) and the State Street SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) advanced as well.
Health Care
The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) lost 0.7%, while iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) also edged lower. iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 0.8%.
Industrial
The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) rose 0.9%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) also moved higher.
Cryptocurrency
In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) was down 0.9%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) fell 1.1%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) dropped 2.6%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was down 1.4%.
