Trump: Trade deficit down 33.8%, exports rise

Trump's Truth Social latest posts08-29

President Donald Trump posted on X on August 28, citing data from Fox News host Laura Ingraham, stating that the U.S. goods and services trade deficit year-to-date decreased by $189.3 billion, or 33.8%, from the same period in 2025. Trump argued that this proves tariffs are working as intended rather than dragging down the economy.

Trump wrote: "Laura Ingraham: 'Year-to-date, the goods and services deficit decreased $189.3 billion, or 33.8 percent, from the same period in 2025. Exports increased $198.3 billion or 11.7 percent. Imports increased $9.0 billion or 0.4 percent.' SO MUCH FOR THE TARRIFFS dragging down the economy — they're doing precisely what they were intended to do — level the playing field so our manufacturing can compete fairly and thrive. EXCELLENT news!"

He also listed export data for January to June of each year: Jan-June 2024: $1.599 trillion; Jan-June 2025: $1.693 trillion; Jan-June 2026: $1.891 trillion, calling it "a tribute to HIM."
